WAKE, William
London: Richard Sare. 1696. 8vo., (4) + xxix (i.e. xlv) + (15) + 144pp., including the preliminary blank (A1), contemporary panelled calf with raised bands, unlettered, short (1 cm.) split at head of upper joint but, nonetheless, a fine, crisp, copy. First edition. Wing W.252. A 'practical discourse' on swearing in all its forms, including, of course, the use of profane words in everyday speech. it was, Wake suggests, an 'evil practice'. 'This is so just a reflection, that it is, perhaps, the only account that can be given, how men come to swear so ordinarily, and upon such little occasions, as they do: in such cases, where there is neither any manner of need of an oath for the conformation of what they speak; nor have they, often times, any such design in it. But 'tis a fashionable way of adorning, or rather of profaning their discourse; the practice of it is become almost epidemical; and they have, insensibly, accustomed their tongues to it, till at last they neither know how to avoid it, nor are themselves sensible when they do it .....'. [p.104]. William Wake (1657-1737) was at the time rector of St. James's church, Westminster. In 1716 he was elevated to the Archbishopric of Canterbury.

Nicolas Venette
A Cologne: Chez Claude Joly, 1696. Seventh edition. [56], 672, [28] pp, 12 plates, some folding. Contemporary vellum. Soiling to vellum. Splitting head of spine vellum and side of front board. Lacking frontis. Occasional spotting. First treatise on sexology in West. Discussing four sub-topics with respect to sex: anatomy, reproduction, desire, and impotence/infertility, Venette reviews ancient and medieval authors, adding his own observations or those of later authors, and comments where common sense prevails. The resulting composition has an ambiguous mixture of seriousness and light-heartedness bordering upon erotic literature. Venette proposes a solution to the crisis of love that exists in his time, advocating a balance between impetuous lovers and religious imperatives. On the one hand, it seeks to defuse the fears of people regarding sex, and to change overall pessimistic views towards love and sexuality. On the other hand, it invites the reader to tame romantic passions by reason and respect for natural laws. The book is not only an instruction manual that provides information on sexuality, it also aims to educate by offering a new way of being and living love in the state of marriage. (Dupas, L'apport du Dr Nicolas Venette, 2007). Refs: BM 25: 1207 (336). Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Missing some leather on front cover and is quite loose but still attached. Some page corners are nibbled the back of the book is attached to the spine and has some missing leather as well. The 800-page folio consists of autobiographical papers, with supporting documents, written in the main in 1664, 1665 and 1670-85, covering the seventy-year period from Baxter's birth in 1615, most expansively the years following the restoration of monarchy and Charles II's return in 1660. Its editor was the nonconformist minister Matthew Sylvester (1636?-1708). This book is an unrivalled primary historical source for seventeenth-century English political, religious, social, cultural and literary history. Baxter offers a first-hand account of events at the highest level (he met, and comments on, Cromwell, Charles II, Clarendon, Sheldon) but he is also (particularly through his ministry) a witness to the experiences of a great range of provincial members of the mercantile, clerical, artisan and agricultural classes. The Reliquiae is a foundation text for eighteenth-century ecclesiastical and historiographical traditions. Its vindication of moderate Puritani … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed by W. Redmayne for the Author, and are to be Sold by Thomas Metcalf, , 1696. Octavo (171 x 108 mm). Contemporary mottled calf neatly rebacked. Tiny ownership inscription on front pastedown of Leonard J. Eslick of St Louis University. General light paper toning and foxing. A very good copy. First edition of one of the principal works of the Roman Catholic controversialist and philosopher John Sergeant (1623-1707). "A more thoroughgoing Aristotelian critique of Locke came from... John Sergeant, who, as a Catholic, stood outside the clerical assaults emanating from the established church. Sergeant's critique of Locke was part of a more wide-ranging critique of what he called 'ideists', a category which yokes Descartes and Locke together. He targets Locke in his The Method to Science (1696) and Solid Philosophy Asserted, against the Fancies of the Ideists (1697)... His principal objection to Locke's epistemology was its implicit scepticism. he charged Locke that his natural philosophy failed to provide universal conclusions or maxims" (Sarah Hutton, British Philosophy in the Seventeenth Century, OUP 2015, p. 202). With an interesting provenance: contemporary ownership inscription at head of title page of Thomas Sandys (and one or two neat marginal corrections), possibly the "interloper" or private trader, who, in 1689, was at the centre of a court case against the East India Company. With a later ownership inscription on the front free endpaper verso: "The property of Shaderick Penn, Bought at Harpers Ferry, Sept the 4 1819 price $1.00&q … [Click Below for Full Description]
