Cary, John
London: Printed by Will. Bonny, and sold by the booksellers of London and Bristol, 1696. First edition of this work by Cary, a pioneer in the field of economics. Small octavo, bound in full contemporary calf, raised bands, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, marbled endpapers. In very good condition. Rare with no examples appearing at auction in the last eighty years. John Cary was a prominent English merchant and writer on matters regarding trade during the eighteenth century. Cary has been heralded as a pioneer in establishing economics as a separate field of "scientific" inquiry, a proponent of a "favorable balance of trade," and an objector to the idea that low wages were desirable. During the turn of the eighteenth century, Cary's writings and pamphlets incorporate more legal vernacular and elements of legal theory as he emphasized the idea of "proof" and "evidence."[1] In the 1717 edition of the Essay, he revealed the need for economics to be a science in that "Trade hath its principles as other Science have." This conclusion arose from the fact that Cary had been a first-hand observer and participant in trade, which allowed him to conclude of the mechanisms which facilitated international trade. While Cary did not fully possess the knowledge and skill to cement economics as a science, Cary was appreciative of the "argumentative value of evidence" and experience based on "coercive rhetoric and factual logic" (Reinert Sophus, Translated Empire). Giacomo Filippo AMETI
Acquaforte e bulino, 1696. [Click Below for Full Description]

MASIERI VALENTIN - DORIGNY LOUIS
Verona Arena, 1696. Acquaforte cm 73x89. [Click Below for Full Description]

TOLAND, John.]
London: [no publisher,] 1696 [i.e. late 1695]. Octavo (160 x 104 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, covers bordered in blind. Front pastedown with the early signature of J. Swift (not the Dean) and with the booklabel of bookseller and bibliographer John Stephens (1948-2006). Minor wear at head of spine and tips, inner hinges tender but without visible split on exterior joints and cords holding, small wormhole to front endpapers, rear pastedown lifted, contents lightly toned. A very good copy. First edition of the author's most significant work, and a key text of Deistic theory. "Toland was but twenty-five when his most famous work, Christianity not Mysterious, anonymously appeared late in 1695 (with a 1696 imprint). In it he argued that no tenets of true Christianity could be contrary to or above human reason, for if they were they would be unintelligible. This contradicted Locke who, in the Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), had argued that revealed truths (for example, about the divinity of Christ) may be above but are not contrary to reason. Toland countered that once a truth is divinely revealed, it is no longer beyond human comprehension; it is neither contrary to reason nor above reason. An unintelligible belief could not be an object of faith because no believer can assent to a doctrine without understanding what it would mean to hold that belief. He concluded that the so-called mysteries of Christianity are not essential to the faith at all but are either puzzles that can be solved or ploys by which priests exercise control over others" (ODNB). HONDIUS, Henricus.
Jähns, pp. 945, 996-997, 1106; Jordan 1696 (6 copies); Sloos 10001; STCN (6 copies). Rare first edition (the only edition in the original Dutch) of a richly illustrated work on the pioneering Dutch "scientific" approach to the military "arts", published soon after the resumption of the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence from Spain at the end of the Twelve Years' Truce (1621). It was written by the cartographer, engraver and mathematician Henricus Hondius (1573-1649) in The Hague, not related to the Hondius family in Amsterdam. The text is divided into four parts, treating fortification, heavy artillery, light artillery and finally logistics, practical engineering and pyrotechnics. It stands out as a work directly aimed at the practice in the field, and is based on warfare as practiced in the Dutch Republic under Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Under Maurits and his younger brother and successor Frederik Hendrik, Dutch military equipment became the best and most highly developed in Europe. They and this book helped turn military studies into a science, both reflecting and helping to bring about the Dutch golden age. With the contemporary owner's inscription on title-page of Herzog Wilhelm VI von Sachsen-Weimar (1598-1662), and traces of a bookplate on paste-down. With some gutter folds reinforced, some leaves slightly browned and an occasional spot, or small marginal tear, chip or hole, one slightly affecting the border of one folding plate, but otherwise in very good condition, with large margins and complete with the final blank leaf L2 (not noted in the literatu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary sprinkled calf, blind double-rule border to covers, spine decorated gilt in compartments, sprinkled edges. With a folding table at page 48. Spine chipped at head and joints lightly rubbed, short tear to one leaf without loss, occasional light spotting; a crisp clean copy, from the library of William Trumbull, MP and diplomat, at the time of this publication secretary of state, with his engraved bookplate to the front pastedown. Third, enlarged edition, first published in 1694, with the Appendix appearing here for the first time. John Briscoe "ranks second to H. Chamberlen among the projectors of land banks who flourished in the latter part of the 17th century. Briscoe's project is set forth in his Discourse on the late funds..." (Palgrave I, 179). The loan to support the project was not forthcoming and the scheme failed in 1696: "the failure of this loan is an instance of the peculiar interaction of the Bank of England and the land banks. These had been rivals from the beginning, the progress of the latter had something to do with the suspension of the former, and that suspension again was a powerful influence toward preventing the incorporation of the National land bank" (Scott, The Constitution and Finance of English, Scottish and Irish Joint-Stock Companies to 1720, III, 252).

BOISGUILBERT, Pierre Le Pesant de].
S.l.s.n.,1696. [Click Below for Full Description]

HOBBES THOMAS
Amsterodami, apud Henr. et viduam Th. Boom, 1696. Cm. 13, pp. (36) 383 (1). Edizione assai rara. Cfr. Kvk; non in Brunet e Graesse. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
