1696. RARA PRIMA EDIZIONE OPERA COMPLETA IN 8 GRANDI VOLUMI LEGATI IN PERGAMENA DELL'EPOCA BERTI, Gianlorenzo. [Click Below for Full Description]

CUNAEUS, Petrus and SCHMIDT, Sebastian
Lipsiae and [Brunsvick]: Jo. Christian. Wohlfarti and Casparis Gruberi, bib, 1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Petrus Cunaeus was an early 17th-century Dutch scholar whose 'Hebrew Republic' is considered, according to Tuck, "the most powerful statement of republican theory in the early years of the Dutch Republic." (Tuck, 169) "De Republica Hebraeorum" describes ancient Hebrew kingdoms and portrays it as the model of republican governments. This book was highly influential on the formation of the Dutch Republic, even though Cunaeus foresaw the Dutch government falling just as Rome did. Ultimately, Cunaeus sought for the book to instill tolerance toward 17th-century Jews through the publication of 'Republica.' This book is curiously bound with Sebastian Schmidt's 'Succinctae & Solidae' - an extremely rare occult work and commentary on angels from the Bible.

ASGILL, John.)
London: Printed, and Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1696. London: Printed, and Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1696. Land bank proposal Octavo (189 x 119 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes in margin. Light soiling to a few pages including title and terminal page. Tearing to final leaf with slight loss to text, final signature held only by the top stitching. A good copy. First edition. In 1695 John Asgill (1659-1738) and Nicholas Barbon founded the first land bank, soon followed by another bank founded by John Briscoe. "Despite opposition, particularly from the Bank of England, the two banks were incorporated by act of parliament as the Governor and Company of the National Land Bank of England to lend the government over £2.5 million at 7 per cent interest. Subscription books were opened at the end of May 1696 but very little was subscribed, and on 11 June one contemporary observed that the 'land bank makes but little progress' (Luttrell, 4.71). The failure of this scheme has been attributed not only to the shortage of coin in this year, and the financial climate more generally, but also to 'public opinion' which appeared 'to have been against the venture' (Horsefield, 207)" (ODNB). The failure can also be attributed to the land bank offering 7% interest, whereas the Bank of England offered 8%. In this pamphlet, Asgill analyses the reasons that the incorporated land bank failed, placing most of the blame on the opposition of the Bank of England. ESTC R496; Kress 1929. MASIERI VALENTIN - DORIGNY LOUIS
1696. Acquaforte cm 73x89. [Click Below for Full Description]

1696. Commentary by Shibin Chen (or Wuyizi). 20 full-page illus. in Vol. I. 100 parts in 24 vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, new stitching. [China]: Jie zi yuan, Preface dated 1696.A rare Qing dynasty edition published by Jie zi yuan of this famous book, one of the "Four Great Classical Novels of China," and one of the world's longest and oldest novels. First published in the late 16th century, it is a mythological novel based on the true journey taken in the 7th century by the monk Xuanzang ("Tripitaka"), to retrieve Buddhist scriptures from India and bring them back to China. Along the way, he is joined by an invincible Sun Wukong ( "Monkey King"), a voracious pig-man Zhu Bajie ("Pigsy"), and a marsh-dwelling sand monster named Sha Wujing ("Sandy"), all of whom protect the monk during his journey. As a comic adventure story, the novel resembles Don Quixote and is a humorous satire of Chinese bureaucracy. It has inspired numerous television series, musical works, video games, and comic books. The first volume contains 20 fine full-page woodcut illustrations. The first four depict the four main characters and the remaining, quite dramatic illustrations show important scenes from the novel. All copies of this edition listed in WorldCat consist of 20 volumes, while our set has been bound in 24 volumes.Nice set, uncommonly fresh, preserved in two chitsu. Minor worming to a few volumes. The title-page in Vol. I is a little defective and torn.

Incisione all'acquaforte, finita a bulino. Coloritura antica con alcuni ritocchi, in buone condizioni. Rara. "Rare bird's eye view of Naples, first published in 1696. Example of the third edition, with the imprint ""Napoli 1748"". Petrini's view is the first map of great editorial work produced in Naples for clear commercial purposes. Although its derivation from the great seventeenth-century view of Orland … [Click Below for Full Description]

St. Augustine
Paris: Pralard, 1696. Classic Graphics is proud to present for your consideration two magnificent, important, and complete antiquarian sets of the work of the great Christian theologian and philosopher St. Augustine of Hippo, in spectacular gilt full-leather bindings dating from the reign of Louis XIV.Note that each set is a separate listing; Psalms and Letters. The phrase "museum quality" is tossed about quite casually these days but these volumes actually come to us from a Museum (The Letters) and a Monastery (The Psalms) hence the sets' complete and intact condition well into their fourth century of existence. Almost incredibly, these books were published during the lifetimes of people who actually experienced the final years of the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation. Sets of more than two or three volumes dating from the 1600s are exceedingly rare. That these two sets--of five and seven volumes--come down to us in complete and intact condition represents an extraordinary circumstance and an unusual opportunity. The volumes' unmatched provenance is further attested by their virtually immaculate and unmarked text blocks and the extraordinary luminosity of their elaborately gilt, full-calfskin period leather bindings. These sets offer truly breathtaking shelf presence. Spectacular polished full-calfskin leather bindings; paneled, raised-hub spines with intricate gilt devices and integral burnt sienna title blocks (labels). Marvelously intact overall, with age-appropriate wear and evidence of library labels (removed) at lower corners of front and rear b … [Click Below for Full Description]
