Johann Andreas Danzs (1654-1727) work on Hebrew grammar is a critical part of the larger canon of research on the Hebrew language. BURNABY, A[nthony]
London printed in the year 1696 - 4to, (2) + 26pp, old burnhole in leaf A3 affecting one word on verso, recently well bound in old style quarter calf gilt. A very good copy. First edition: the Lauderdale copy.> Wing B.5742. Goldsmiths 3258. Kress 1940. Massie 1358. Burnaby gives eight reasons why a malt tax would be just, profitable, efficient and speedy. Thus his first reason was that, 'Such a tax will be less than usually taxes are, by reason every person will pay proportionable in the price of malt. The more universal any tax is, it is to be supposed . to be the more equal; and I presume, no person will deny that such a tax will prove so universal, that not any person will escape paying his proportion according to his consumption, ergo, no person can complain; who consumes little, will have but little to pay'.
SIR DAVID LINDESAY/LINDSAY
Galasgow - Robert Sanders. 1696. Hardcover. Book, The poetical works of Sir David Lindesay (c 1490- c1555). A scarce edition of this work in a pocket sized format. The entire text of this work is in blackletter. ESTC states that there are two contents leaves to the rear, this copy is lacking those and ends at page 264. Closely cut to page 25, with the catchword therefore illegible. The title page spells the author's name as Lindesay, although through time there have been many other spellings including Lindsay and Lyndsay. Sir David Lindsay was a Scottish poet and Lyon king of arms. The Lyon King of Arms was the highest heraldic office. His poetry reflects the spirit of the Renaissance, specifically as a makar. Of Lindsay's poems, he gained a great reputation for his writings. His longer poems represent the range of his literary talent. Lindsay's writings are regarded to be the first literary expression in Scotland of the Renaissance. Works to this volume include 'Of the Monarchie', 'Of the Papingo' and 'To The King's Grace'. Of The Papyngo is written in a familiar medieval manner. It is a tract full of admonition to the court and clergy. Lindsay is also famous for producing a Scottish roll of arms known as The Lindsay of the Mount Roll. This roll contains 400 Scottish coats of arms and forms the basis of the official Scots heraldic registry in use today. FERRARIO, Pietro; Giovanni Giacomo DE' ROSSI.
Rome de' Rossi -1702; 1684; n.d. circa 1713 1696 - 2 vol. bound together. Large folio (c. 49.5 x 36 cm). 18th-century Roman mottled brown calf richly tooled in gold to a rococo design with curling leaf tools, fan-shaped tools, flowers, palmettes and fleurons, spines gilt in compartments with a large rose tool; German library label in each volume on front paste-down, a little light dampstaining, going into the top of image of vol. 2, just into the blank upper margin of vol. 1. Superb examples of the art of the bookbinder. These volumes have bindings almost identical to those found on similar de' Rossi plate books, indicating that they were most likely made for the publisher; for example, see the Franklin Kissner Collection of Books on Rome, Christie's, 3 October 1990, lot 447. De' Rossi was one of the leading publishers of architectural works on Rome in the late XVII century. As well as buying up existing copperplates from other publishers and the heirs of artists, he also commissioned new engravings by artists such as Castiglione, Bartoli, and Aquila. De' Rossi not only documents the classical architecture of Rome from the renaissance onwards, but also groups them by building type. The lack of text puts the images in pride of place and the choice of images constitutes the sole editorial contribution of the author and publisher. Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but his posthumously published opus magnum, the Naauwkeurige, enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds. … The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality. … Each plate shows a different plant in flower, including many exotic species from America and other distant lands. The plant dominates the foreground, filling the entire page … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ovington, J[ohn].
London, Jacob Tonson, 1696. 8vo. (16), 606 pp., final blank f. With 2 folding engraved plates and a folding coin table. Contemporary English calf with blind rules on covers; spine gilt with label. First edition. - Ovington sailed as Chaplain of an East India Company ship and remained in Bombay and Surat, giving excellent descriptions of both cities and particularly of Mogul administration of the region. While the book includes detailed accounts of Madeira, Ascension Island, St Helena, Bombay, and the Cape of Good Hope, it also covers the coasts of Arabia: in particular, it has chapters on Mocha in Yemen and Muscat in Oman, with a discussion of the local trade in the abundant "beneficial commodities" such als balsam, myrrh, dates, frankincense and pearls (mentioning the "pearl-fishing of the island Baharem, which lies higher up in the Gulf"). Ovington mentions the strength of the Arabs' naval forces, which is such "that the Portuguese generally endeavour to avoid them". Curiously, he singles out the Arabs for their generosity to their enemies and slaves, who are said never to be used for any hard work, but are allowed to live "in ease and idleness", so that they almost come to be "in love with their confinement". - Spine bumped and rubbed; hinges starting. Wormhole in first two leaves slightly affecting line border on title; variously browned due to paper; wants front flyleaf. Extremely rare. Cox I, 279. Howgego I, O28. Wing O-701. Not in Gay, Macro, Atabey, Blackmer, etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
