"The author, Abraham Munting, was an eminent professor of botany and chemistry at the University of Groningen. … and founded one of the most extensive botanical gardens of the period, known as the `Paradise of Groningen`, which he directed from 1658 up until his death in 1683. Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but his posthumously published opus magnum, the Naauwkeurige, enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds. … The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality. … Each plate shows a different plant in flower, including many exotic species from America and other distant lands. The plant dominates the foreground, filling the entire page … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ovington, J[ohn].
London, Jacob Tonson, 1696. 8vo. (16), 606 pp., final blank f. With 2 folding engraved plates and a folding coin table. Contemporary English calf with blind rules on covers; spine gilt with label. First edition. - Ovington sailed as Chaplain of an East India Company ship and remained in Bombay and Surat, giving excellent descriptions of both cities and particularly of Mogul administration of the region. While the book includes detailed accounts of Madeira, Ascension Island, St Helena, Bombay, and the Cape of Good Hope, it also covers the coasts of Arabia: in particular, it has chapters on Mocha in Yemen and Muscat in Oman, with a discussion of the local trade in the abundant "beneficial commodities" such als balsam, myrrh, dates, frankincense and pearls (mentioning the "pearl-fishing of the island Baharem, which lies higher up in the Gulf"). Ovington mentions the strength of the Arabs' naval forces, which is such "that the Portuguese generally endeavour to avoid them". Curiously, he singles out the Arabs for their generosity to their enemies and slaves, who are said never to be used for any hard work, but are allowed to live "in ease and idleness", so that they almost come to be "in love with their confinement". - Spine bumped and rubbed; hinges starting. Wormhole in first two leaves slightly affecting line border on title; variously browned due to paper; wants front flyleaf. Extremely rare. Cox I, 279. Howgego I, O28. Wing O-701. Not in Gay, Macro, Atabey, Blackmer, etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PRATT, Samuel
London: Printed for Henry Bonwick,, 1696. Humbly submitted to the Consideration of both Houses of Parliament. By a Lover of his Country. Octavo (187 x 115 mm). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, paper label to spine hand lettered, raised bands, boards decoratively tooled in blind, edges speckled red. 19th-century ownership inscriptions to front pastedown and free endpaper, and written title label to front pastedown. Spine ends and corners worn, joints split with some loss to lower spine, paper label chipped, rear hinge cracked but holding, occasional spotting to contents, a very good copy. First edition. Pratt's contribution to the debate surrounding the recoinage of 1696 was paid for by the Treasury and broadly supported William Lowndes's case for devaluation. Pratt suggests that coin has not just extrinsic value, but a third "real" value, "adherent to the Species, with respect to time and place".

ARNAULD, Antoine & NICOLE, Pierre
Printed by T.B. for J. Taylor, London 1696 - Contemporary calf, blindstamped decoration on covers, morocco spine label. Other than minor staining on the endleaves, a very nice copy. celebrated and influential seventeenth-century treatise on logic by the Cartesians, Arnauld (1612-1694) and Nicolo (1625-1695). Logic or the art of thinking is better known as the logic of Port-Royal because the authors belonged to the sect of Jansenists who had their home at the convent of Port-Royal. The work deals with concept (idea), judgment, reasoning and method, with an interesting argument against negative numbers, later acknowledged by Leibniz. Despite Arnauld's earlier denunciation of Descartes' theological claims, the geometric foundation of the Port-Royal Logic and its methodology owe much to Cartesian rationalism, as well as to the ideology of the authors' fellow Jansenist, Blaise Pascal. Logic or the art of thinking has also been seen as a foundation work in probability theory, specifically in its attempts to axiomatically organize a science and to show its logical structure, taking as a model geometry. Divided into four parts, the authors reflect upon ideas, or upon the first operation of the mind, which they refer to as apprehension; considerations of men about proper judgment; the nature and various kinds of reasoning; and the methods of demonstrating truth. The 1818 English edition served as the basic text of logic at both Cambridge and Oxford.

Thevenot, Melchisedec
Amongst travel collections, Thevenot's occupies a distinguished place, being one of the most complete and lavishly produced; its scope includes Africa, the Far East, South East Asia, America, amongst other places. The relation on Australia is certainly one of the most significant and primary sources of information on the Island. The collection is also of great American interest; it contains Palafox's study on the natives, Acarette du Biscay's relation of La Plata and Gage's relation, which includes an important passage on Mexico, and is profusely illustrated. Asia and Africa are also well represented here, with actually more than half of the first volume being dedicated to it. Possibly the most important relation is that of Abel Tasman. The illustration is composed of maps, views and plates; the maps includes East Africa, the Indies, China, Hindustan, the Tasman map of Australia in its second issue -with rhumb lines- and several others; the plates show costumes, plants, architecture and such. The Tasman map is a cornerstone of Australian cartography, both as the earliest obtainable map of the region as well as the predominant depiction from which the World would know the Island for about a century. The importance of this map, thus, can hardly be overstated. An exceedingly difficult book to collate, "Bibliographers have expended great pains on the collation of the Thevenot collection" (Catalogue of the John Carter Brown Library, vol. III, 102); "Collection interessante, don't il est difficile de trouver des exemplaires complets" (Brunet). Thevenot's collection was publish … [Click Below for Full Description]

BULAEUS, Justus Jacobi and Viglius Cornelius DOMINUS.
STCN (3 copies); WorldCat (same 3 copies). Extremely rare, fourth surviving edition (the previous three only surviving in one copy) of a popular Dutch book of sermons intended for everyday home use, explaining biblical texts to the layman. It is known the work was officially to be included in the inventory of a "ziekentrooster" (literally a comforter of the sick) on board of ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and indeed the present copy has been supplied by the VOC as is apparent from the monogram of the Amsterdam chamber of the company on its binding. With modern library stamps. Rebacked as noted, with some wear along the corners and the foot of the spine, otherwise in good condition and still a good copy.

QUINTILIANUS, Marcus Fabius
Strasbourg: Johann Reinhold Dulssecker, 1696. 861 p. 23 cm. Engraved vignette on title page. Full leather. Spine chipped, corners and edges worn. Bookplate residue front pastedown, signature and library stamp on title page, tiny ink note and stamp on rear of title page, some ink notes on rear endpaper. Moderate foxing. Some red pencil and blue ink lines scattered throughout. Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (ca. 35-ca. 100) was a Roman rhetorician from Hispania, widely referred to in medieval schools of rhetoric and in Renaissance writing. In English translation, he is usually referred to as Quintilian. These "Declamationes" have been attributed to him; however, there is some dispute over the real writer of these texts. Some modern scholars believe that the declamations circulated in his name represent the lecture notes of a scholar either using Quintilian's system or actually trained by him. Latin text. Fair. Par un Garde de la Marine Servant sur le Bord de Monsieur Duquesne (Paris, 1692). His name is not given in this translation, but appears in the privilege to the French edition. "The author was employed in French factory posts set up in India, and travelled amongst the India Ocean Islands" (NMM). Pouchot's account of the fight "with fourteen Dutch and English ships" at Fort St. George (pp. 96–105) is contested by Dampier in A New Voyage, explaining that he feels obliged to relate the story (which was given to him by "the Gunner's Mate of Capt. Heath's Ship, a very sensible Man") because "there is such a plausible Story made of it in Captain Duquesne's Late Voyage to the East-Indies" (I, p. 522). Dam … [Click Below for Full Description]
