Swift, Jonathan (contributor) & John DUNTON (editor and publisher)
London: John Dunton, 1696. Volumes I-XIX (of XX) with volume titles. No. 25 in vol. XVII lacking. Folio. Contemporary Cambridge calf. Rebacked, heavy foxing and toning, some pages cropped. Volumes I-XIX (of XX) with volume titles. No. 25 in vol. XVII lacking. Folio. Swift's First Appearance in Print. A long run of The Athenian Gazette, containing Jonathan Swift's first appearance in print. His "Ode to the Anthenian Society" with a prefatory letter of 14 February 1791 from Moor Park appears on pages 1-6 of the supplement to the fifth volume. Both the poem and letter are signed in print, unusual for Swift who rarely acknowledged his works. Swift addresses his poem to the Athenian Society, an anonymous club of learned men, whose members are now known to have included the Gazette's publisher John Dunton, Samuel Wesley (father of John and Charles), and Richard Sault. The Gazette printed answers to questions sent in by its readers. "Through twelve diffuse stanzas, composed in nine days, Swift congratulates the nameless subjects of his adoration (actually a bookseller [John Dunton] and some hack assistants) upon their great part in reviving learning after the wars of 1688-91 ... while he is delighted by their skill in refining philosophy ... he reproves them for their compliments to women, which have turned the heads of the female sex" (Ehrenpreis, Swift I, p. 115). According to Dr. Johnson's apocryphal anecdote, this was the poem that lead Dryden to observe, "Cousin Swift, you will never be a poet." [Bound after:] [GILDON, Charles]. The History of the Athenian Society, for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUBREY, JOHN
London: Printed for Edward Castle, 1696, 1696. First edition. Wing A-4188; NCBEL II, 1682. Bound a little tightly; edges slightly rubbed; some scattered foxing; very good copy, and uncommon thus.. 8vo, contemporary calf rebacked, maroon leather label, gilt rules and lettering. Five woodcuts in the text. Lacking the front blank (A1). The only book by John Aubrey (1626-1697) printed in his lifetime, a compilation of entertaining anecdotes which he styled "A Collection of Hermitic Philosophy." It contains anecdotes on numerous subjects: Omens, dreams, apparitions, voices, impulses, marvels, magic, transportation by invisible powers, glances of love and envy, etc., interspersed with autobiographical details about the author. It was a popular work, though considered by many an eccentric one. There were later editions in 1721 and 1784, and Scott refers to it in his novel The Antiquary. "The Miscellanies make a pleasant bedside book, which the passing of two hundred and fifty years has not made dull," Anthony Powell, John Aubrey and His Friends (1963). Aubrey's famous Lives of Eminent Men (later Brief Lives) was not published until 1813.

BURNABY, A[nthony]
London printed in the year 1696 - 4to, (2) + 26pp, old burnhole in leaf A3 affecting one word on verso, recently well bound in old style quarter calf gilt. A very good copy. First edition: the Lauderdale copy.> Wing B.5742. Goldsmiths 3258. Kress 1940. Massie 1358. Burnaby gives eight reasons why a malt tax would be just, profitable, efficient and speedy. Thus his first reason was that, 'Such a tax will be less than usually taxes are, by reason every person will pay proportionable in the price of malt. The more universal any tax is, it is to be supposed . to be the more equal; and I presume, no person will deny that such a tax will prove so universal, that not any person will escape paying his proportion according to his consumption, ergo, no person can complain; who consumes little, will have but little to pay'.
LANCELOTTUS, Johannes Paulus
Coloniae Munatianae : Impensis Emanuelis & Joh. Georgii Konig, 1696. - 1696 Pope Gregory XIII Corpus Juris Canon LAW Inquisition Gregory IX Decretals “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes.” Erasmus A huge late 17th-century printing of ‘Corpus Juris Canonici’ by Johannes Paulus Lancelottus. SIR DAVID LINDESAY/LINDSAY
Galasgow - Robert Sanders. 1696. Hardcover. Book, The poetical works of Sir David Lindesay (c 1490- c1555). A scarce edition of this work in a pocket sized format. Lindsay's writings are regarded to be the first literary expression in Scotland of the Renaissance. Works to this volume include 'Of the Monarchie', 'Of the Papingo' and 'To The King's Grace'. Of The Papyngo is written in a familiar medieval manner. It is a tract full of admonition to the court and clergy. FERRARIO, Pietro; Giovanni Giacomo DE' ROSSI.
Rome de' Rossi -1702; 1684; n.d. circa 1713 1696 - 2 vol. bound together. Large folio (c. 49.5 x 36 cm). 18th-century Roman mottled brown calf richly tooled in gold to a rococo design with curling leaf tools, fan-shaped tools, flowers, palmettes and fleurons, spines gilt in compartments with a large rose tool; German library label in each volume on front paste-down, a little light dampstaining, going into the top of image of vol. 2, just into the blank upper margin of vol. 1. Superb examples of the art of the bookbinder. These volumes have bindings almost identical to those found on similar de' Rossi plate books, indicating that they were most likely made for the publisher; for example, see the Franklin Kissner Collection of Books on Rome, Christie's, 3 October 1990, lot 447. De' Rossi was one of the leading publishers of architectural works on Rome in the late XVII century. As well as buying up existing copperplates from other publishers and the heirs of artists, he also commissioned new engravings by artists such as Castiglione, Bartoli, and Aquila. De' Rossi not only documents the classical architecture of Rome from the renaissance onwards, but also groups them by building type. The lack of text puts the images in pride of place and the choice of images constitutes the sole editorial contribution of the author and publisher.
