Danz, Johann Andreas
Jenae (Jena) : Bielckius 1696 [AND] 1702 [AND. 1696; 1702; 1699; 1700. Period vellum boards. 8vo. 501, 28, 361, 118, 92 pages. 17 cm. In Latin with Hebrew, Aramaic, and Syriac. Johann Andreas Danzs (1654-1727) work on Hebrew grammar is a critical part of the larger canon of research on the Hebrew language. Danz attempted to perfect the study of Hebrew language and many of the terminologies that are used, even now, are attributed to him. However, at the time of writing, Danz inadvertently made the study of Hebrew grammar much more difficult than he had hoped. This work was the work that helped him create a name for himself, especially through his ideas of Hebrew antiquities. SUBJECTS: Hebrew language -- Grammar. Aramaic language -- Grammar. OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide. Some period-era writing on the title page. Previous owners stamps on notes page and title page. Internally Very Good Condition. Some wear to boards. Overall Very Good Condition. (HEB-52-3)

G. Le Roux)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Ovington, J[ohn].
London, Jacob Tonson, 1696. 8vo. (16), 606 pp., final blank f. With 2 folding engraved plates and a folding coin table. Contemporary English calf with blind rules on covers; spine gilt with label. First edition. - Ovington sailed as Chaplain of an East India Company ship and remained in Bombay and Surat, giving excellent descriptions of both cities and particularly of Mogul administration of the region. While the book includes detailed accounts of Madeira, Ascension Island, St Helena, Bombay, and the Cape of Good Hope, it also covers the coasts of Arabia: in particular, it has chapters on Mocha in Yemen and Muscat in Oman, with a discussion of the local trade in the abundant "beneficial commodities" such als balsam, myrrh, dates, frankincense and pearls (mentioning the "pearl-fishing of the island Baharem, which lies higher up in the Gulf"). Ovington mentions the strength of the Arabs' naval forces, which is such "that the Portuguese generally endeavour to avoid them". Curiously, he singles out the Arabs for their generosity to their enemies and slaves, who are said never to be used for any hard work, but are allowed to live "in ease and idleness", so that they almost come to be "in love with their confinement". - Spine bumped and rubbed; hinges starting. Wormhole in first two leaves slightly affecting line border on title; variously browned due to paper; wants front flyleaf. Extremely rare. Cox I, 279. Howgego I, O28. Wing O-701. Not in Gay, Macro, Atabey, Blackmer, etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THEVENOT, Melchisedech
Thomas Moette, 1696. Both blanks present. With 35 full-page plates. Tree skin calf binding, gilt spine, edges stained red; corners slightly rubbed. An excellent copy. First edition of this extremely scarce treatise on swimming, considered one of the earliest books on the subject. In the introduction, the author notes only two earlier works known to him, Digby's De arte natandi (1587) and Nicholas Wynman's dialogue, Colymbetes (1538). Translated into English in 1699, Thévenot's manual became the standard eighteenth-century reference for learning to swim. Among many topics, he discusses ways of getting into the water, various aquatic feats and maneuvers, and stroke technique. Following Thévenot's description, the breaststroke became the most common swimming motion for centuries. The text is complimented by lively illustrations throughout engraved by Charles Moette. An amateur scientist, Thévenot (1620-1692) studied astronomy, physics, medicine, and magnetism. Born into nobility, the wealthy and erudite Thévenot was also an important patron to innumerable scientists and mathematicians. He was equally a renowned cartographer and traveler, served as a diplomat in Italy, and was the Royal Librarian to King Louis XIV.

Cave, William:
Leipzig, bey Thomas Fritsch 1696. (16), 654, (26) Seiten. Mit Einleitung und einem Register. Frakturdruck. Rot-schwarzer Titel mit Druckermarke Fritsches (Pegasus) sowie etwas Buchschmuck. 8° (21 x 17 cm). [Hardcover / fest gebunden]. VD17 39:129671R.
Spoor M DC XCVI, Argentorati (Straßburg) 1696 - Titelblatt, 7 Blatt, 982, 176, 308 S., 2 Blatt Errata. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LOCKE (John)], LE CLERC (Jean) traducteur
Amsterdam, Henri Westein [et Henri Schelte], 1696-1703. 2 volumes in-12, plein veau havane de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs guillochés or, ornés de caissons fleuronnés et cloisonnés, dentelle sur les coupes et les chasses, tranches rouges, (8), 356, (4) p. et (4), 318 p. Rare première traduction française, complète de la deuxième partie parue en 1703, de 'The Reasonableness of Christianity, and its vindications', publiée anonymement immédiatement à la suite de l'originale londonienne. "In October 1695 Jean le Clerc reported to Locke from Amsterdam that the Westein firm was having the 'Reasonableness' translated into French" (Yolton). [Click Below for Full Description]

GRAVINA GIAN VINCENZO
ex typographia Antoniide Rubeis. Unito a: GRAVINA GIAN VINCENZO Delle antiche favole. I. "Gli Opuscula (Specimen prisci iuris, De conversione doctrinarum, De lingua Latina dialogus, De lingua Etrusca dialogus, De contemtu [sic] mortis, De luctu minuendo) contengono in nuce tematiche poi ampiamente affrontate nelle opere maggiori.
