Remains of silk straps. Pasted inside is an ex-libris of Van der Veen-Hondius. Collection of poems by Jacoba Petronella Winckelman (Vlissingen 1696 - Middelburg 1761), who came from a very religious family and lived a reformed, pious life. By attending conventicles during which she shared religious ideas, she developed her literary talent. Jacoba Petronella died in 1761 at the age of 64, and most of her works were published after her death. In 1763, her niece Maria Elizabeth Winckelman published a first collection of poems, named 'Stichtelyke gedichten', in which she added an introductional biography of her aunt's life. A year later, this collection followed. It also includes a foreword by Maria Elizabeth, in which she explains that this book includes poems of the same nature as the previous publication, meaning devotional poetry aimed at bettering humanity. It also features blessings and mourning poems because these were believed to serve the same purpose. In 1769, these two volumes were republished as a bundle. L3908

FONTANA, Carlo
Two double-page plates & 80 engravings in the text. 8 p.l., 196, [16] pp. Folio, orig. carta rustica (covers a little soiled & spotted, first few leaves a little dampstained in outer lower corner). Rome: G.F. Buagni, 1696. First edition and a fine fresh copy of this finely illustrated work on baroque hydraulics. Fontana (1638-1714), was the most important Roman architect of his generation. This book "emerges from an actual design problem. The practical source for this theoretical work was the project for the raising of the water level of Lake Bracciano, necessary since the second fountain in Saint Peter's square, built by Bernini under Pope Clement X, was to be fed with water brought from this lake... "In the three parts of Acque correnti, Fontana takes up a wide range of empirical and theoretical issues. In his discussion of the behavior of water, Fontana challenges Galileo's theory of flotation, positing water as heavier than earth. The technique of moving water through lead pipes is discussed, as is the theory of the speed of the movement of water, followed by an analysis of compression and the functioning of pumps. In the third part, Fontana deals specifically with the project of bringing water from Bracciano to Rome. The water brought from Bracciano was drawn from the property of the Orsini, and Fontana was able to draw from a rich range of documents in the family archives... "The Acque correnti is exquisitely illustrated with engravings of a high artistic and decorative standard, and thus appreciated not only by hydraulic engineers but also by collectors … [Click Below for Full Description]

Claude-Michel Pouchot de Chantassin, Joseph-Jacques Le Maire
London: Daniel Dring, 1696 A good copy of an extremely scarce english translation of two early voyage accounts with 1 (of 2) folding maps, and 5 plates.' A New Voyage to the E Indies' by Pouchot de Chantassin was first published in Paris in 1692.'The Voyages of the Sieur Le Maire, to the Canary-Islands, Cape Verde, Senegal, and Gambia' by Joseph-Jacques Le Maire, was first published in 1695. Le Maire's work is particularly interesting because of information it provides on W Africa in the 1600's, including the extent of European interaction and the slave trade. This copy is in a fairly new full leather binding with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. The binding is in near fine condition. New endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. Contents: title page; author's preface 2pp; E Indies pp 1-187; Finis (map of E Indies lacking); folding map of 'The Canarie or Fortunate Isles'; text pp 1-128 with 5 plates and sections on the rivers Zamenee, St Domingo and Geva; Finis. Overall very clean, with light toning to paper. There is a small ink mark to the side margin of the title page through to p4; a small repaired margin tear at p 37/8 of E Indies section; and a little light underling at the beginning of the Canary Islands section. A very scarce work.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Munting, published by Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma Utrecht and Leiden, 1696. This work enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality.Artists and Engravers: Abraham Munting (Dutch, 1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the 'Paradise of Groningen' and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students. FERRARIO, Pietro; Giovanni Giacomo DE' ROSSI.
Rome de' Rossi -1702; 1684; n.d. circa 1713, 1696. 2 vol. bound together. Large folio (c. 49.5 x 36 cm). 18th-century Roman mottled brown calf richly tooled in gold to a rococo design with curling leaf tools, fan-shaped tools, flowers, palmettes and fleurons, spines gilt in compartments with a large rose tool; German library label in each volume on front paste-down, a little light dampstaining, going into the top of image of vol. 2, just into the blank upper margin of vol. 1. Superb examples of the art of the bookbinder. These volumes have bindings almost identical to those found on similar de' Rossi plate books, indicating that they were most likely made for the publisher; for example, see the Franklin Kissner Collection of Books on Rome, Christie's, 3 October 1990, lot 447. De' Rossi was one of the leading publishers of architectural works on Rome in the late XVII century. As well as buying up existing copperplates from other publishers and the heirs of artists, he also commissioned new engravings by artists such as Castiglione, Bartoli, and Aquila. De' Rossi not only documents the classical architecture of Rome from the renaissance onwards, but also groups them by building type. The lack of text puts the images in pride of place and the choice of images constitutes the sole editorial contribution of the author and publisher.
