CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria.
1696 - Venice, 1696. 460 x 615mm. A fine map of Japan & Korea, in typical Coronelli style, published in his 'Isolario'. The large title cartouche features the symboll of the Society of Jesus and a dedication to Father Fontaine of the Jesuits. In the sea between Japan and Korea is a vignette of a boat described as a Japanese vessel capable of crossing the 220 French miles between Osaka and Nagasaki in twelve days: Coronelli had copied this from Montanus, who had mis-attributed a Korean ship. CORONELLI, Vincenzo Maria.
1696 - Venice, 1696. Plate size 120 x 165mm, set in text. This is the earliest printed map dedicated to New Zealand, although the information dates back to Tasman in 1642. Showing from the Island of Three Kings to Cape Clippage, it was published seventy years before the arrival of Captain Cook. This plate was created to to print a globe gore (i.e. to be pasted onto a globe), which accounts for the tapering longitude lines. It seems that the plate then got damaged, as it has been trimmed and new borders engraved for an edition of Coronelli's Isolario, set within an Italian text description.

1696. Antique print, titled: 'Thamarindus.' - Plate 21: Tamarindus indica (Tamarind). Handcoloured engraving on hand laid paper. Description: "Naauwkeurige Beschryving der Aardgewassen, Waar in de veelerley Aart en bijzondere Eigenschappen der Boomen, Heesters, Kruyden, Bloemen, Met haare Vrugten, Zaden, Wortelen en Bollen, Neevens derzelver waare Voort-Teeling, gelukkige Aanwinning, en heylzaame Genees-Krachten", by A. Munting, published by Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma Utrecht and Leiden, 1696. This work enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Abraham Munting'. Abraham Munting (Dutch, 1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the 'Paradise of Groningen' and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students. It was in this beautiful garden that his daughter Hester died eating deadly nightshade. This work portrays plants growing in Munting's garden. His numerous botanical friends had sent the seeds of many of these plants to him from the Dutch East- and West Indies, Africa and the Americas. Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics. … [Click Below for Full Description]

It continued to hold the boards in either the original or altered form for more than a century. The epilogue was written by Congreve, the prologue by an unknown hand. According to Cibber, the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, subsisted for several years on the success of this and two or three other plays" (Pforzheimer). Rome: G.F. Buagni, 1696. First edition and a fine fresh copy of this finely illustrated work on baroque hydraulics. Fontana (1638-1714), was the most important Roman architect of his generation. This book "emerges from an actual design problem. The practical source for this theoretical work was the project for the raising of the water level of Lake Bracciano, necessary since the second fountain in Saint Peter's square, built by Bernini under Pope Clement X, was to be fed with water brought from this lake... "In the three parts of Acque correnti, Fontana takes up a wide range of empirical and theoretical issues. In his discussion of the behavior of water, Fontana challenges Galileo's theory of flotation, positing water as heavier than earth. The technique of moving water through lead pipes is discussed, as is the theory of the speed of the movement of water, followed by an analysis of compression and the functioning of pumps. In the third part, Fontana deals specifically with the project of bringing water from Bracciano to Rome. The water brought from Bracciano was drawn from the property of the Orsini, and Fontana was able to draw from a rich range of documents in the family archives... "The Acque correnti is exquisitely illustrated with engravings of a high artistic and decorative standard, and thus appreciated not only by hydraulic engineers but also by collectors … [Click Below for Full Description]

Claude-Michel Pouchot de Chantassin, Joseph-Jacques Le Maire
London: Daniel Dring, 1696 A good copy of an extremely scarce english translation of two early voyage accounts with 1 (of 2) folding maps, and 5 plates.' Le Maire's work is particularly interesting because of information it provides on W Africa in the 1600's, including the extent of European interaction and the slave trade. This copy is in a fairly new full leather binding with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. The binding is in near fine condition. New endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. Contents: title page; author's preface 2pp; E Indies pp 1-187; Finis (map of E Indies lacking); folding map of 'The Canarie or Fortunate Isles'; text pp 1-128 with 5 plates and sections on the rivers Zamenee, St Domingo and Geva; Finis.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Munting, published by Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma Utrecht and Leiden, 1696. This work enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality.Artists and Engravers: Abraham Munting (Dutch, 1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the 'Paradise of Groningen' and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students. It was in this beautiful garden that his daughter Hester died eating deadly nightshade. This work portrays plants growing in Munting's garden. FERRARIO, Pietro; Giovanni Giacomo DE' ROSSI.
Rome de' Rossi -1702; 1684; n.d. circa 1713, 1696. 2 vol. bound together. Large folio (c. 49.5 x 36 cm). 18th-century Roman mottled brown calf richly tooled in gold to a rococo design with curling leaf tools, fan-shaped tools, flowers, palmettes and fleurons, spines gilt in compartments with a large rose tool; German library label in each volume on front paste-down, a little light dampstaining, going into the top of image of vol. 2, just into the blank upper margin of vol. 1. Superb examples of the art of the bookbinder. These volumes have bindings almost identical to those found on similar de' Rossi plate books, indicating that they were most likely made for the publisher; for example, see the Franklin Kissner Collection of Books on Rome, Christie's, 3 October 1990, lot 447. De' Rossi was one of the leading publishers of architectural works on Rome in the late XVII century. As well as buying up existing copperplates from other publishers and the heirs of artists, he also commissioned new engravings by artists such as Castiglione, Bartoli, and Aquila. De' Rossi not only documents the classical architecture of Rome from the renaissance onwards, but also groups them by building type. The lack of text puts the images in pride of place and the choice of images constitutes the sole editorial contribution of the author and publisher.
