Item #30190.1 If one is to really understand the history of political thought, and the evolution... the revolution resulting in independent thinking & self-rule, one must understand that which came before, and that was the philosophy advocated by Filmer. The current assessment of PATRICARCHA, as a treatise on the Right of Kings to Rule, has been judged thusly by Paul Rahe, a historian [then] at University of Tulsa, " ... the book is worth its weight in gold. It was written at some point after 1628 and prior to 1631. Filmer sought permission from Charles I to publish it at some point prior to 8 February 1632 and was on that date denied permission. It circulated thereafter in manuscript for nearly fifty years and exercised an immense influence on English royalist thinking. Eventually, at the ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

HONDIUS, Henricus.
Jähns, pp. 945, 996-997, 1106; Jordan 1696 (6 copies); Sloos 10001; STCN (6 copies). Rare first edition (the only edition in the original Dutch) of a richly illustrated work on the pioneering Dutch "scientific" approach to the military "arts", published soon after the resumption of the Eighty Years' War for Dutch independence from Spain at the end of the Twelve Years' Truce (1621). It was written by the cartographer, engraver and mathematician Henricus Hondius (1573-1649) in The Hague, not related to the Hondius family in Amsterdam. The text is divided into four parts, treating fortification, heavy artillery, light artillery and finally logistics, practical engineering and pyrotechnics. It stands out as a work directly aimed at the practice in the field, and is based on warfare as practiced in the Dutch Republic under Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Under Maurits and his younger brother and successor Frederik Hendrik, Dutch military equipment became the best and most highly developed in Europe. They and this book helped turn military studies into a science, both reflecting and helping to bring about the Dutch golden age. With the contemporary owner's inscription on title-page of Herzog Wilhelm VI von Sachsen-Weimar (1598-1662), and traces of a bookplate on paste-down. With some gutter folds reinforced, some leaves slightly browned and an occasional spot, or small marginal tear, chip or hole, one slightly affecting the border of one folding plate, but otherwise in very good condition, with large margins and complete with the final blank leaf L2 (not noted in the literatu … [Click Below for Full Description]

DANZ, Johann Andreas
1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Johann Andreas Danz's work on Hebrew grammar is an excellent source of oriental languages. Danz attempted to perfect the study of Hebrew language and many of the terminologies that are used, even now, are attributed to him. However, at the time of writing, Danz inadvertently made the study of Hebrew grammar much more difficult than he had hoped. This work was the work that helped Danz create a name for himself, especially through his ideas of Hebrew antiquities. This particular printing seems to be rather unique. It is bound with two other works, which do not appear in library or bibliographical references. [Attributes: First Edition]

DAHURON, René.
Cf. Arnold Arboretum I, p. 183; Bradley III, p. 171; Hunt 395 & 455; for Dahuron: NBG XII, col. 787. An unrecorded Italian translation of a French treatise on the pruning and grafting of the limbs of fruit trees, first published as Nouveau Traité de la Taille des Arbres Fruitiers (1696) with the twelve illustrations printed from woodcuts. For the present edition the twelve illustrations were engraved on three copperplates. The Hunt Library catalogue notes that the first French edition is "a rare little work, not listed in any of the larger botanical collections so far as we can find," and the present Italian translation appears to be even rarer.Dahuron was gardener to Georg Wilhelm, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg at Celle from 1690 to 1701 and then to Wilhelm I, King of Prussia at Potsdam. In very good condition and with generous margins, with only some minor water stains at the foot, not approaching the text or illustrations. An extremely rare Italian translation of an early treatise on the grafting of fruit trees.

He also made provided groundwork in Arminianism and is considered and 'economic theologist'. Known as the foundational work of international law, Grotius's 'De Jure Belli' was founded in the Catholic traditions of natural law. According to Peter Geyl, this work, "is an attempt by a theologically and classically educated jurist to base upon law order and security in the community of states as well as in the national society in which he had grown up." LANCELOTTUS, Johannes Paulus
"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes." ― Erasmus A huge late 17th-century printing of 'Corpus Juris Canonici' by Johannes Paulus Lancelottus. This work deals with the Ecclesiastical and Catholic law and papal decrees during the papacy of Pope Gregory XIII, Gregory IX, and Boniface VIII. Each of these popes is remembered for monumental events during the course of Catholic history including: · Gregory XIII commissioning the Gregorian calendar as the accepted calendar · Boniface VIII declaring the spiritual and temporal power were solely under the pope's jurisdiction · Gregory IX's canonic law 'Decretals' - which is found in all editions of 'Corpus Juris Canonici', including this 1696 edition. Sir David Lindesay
Glasgow: Robert Sanders, 1696. A scarce edition of this work in a pocket sized format. The entire text of this work is in blackletter. ESTC states that there are two contents leaves to the rear, this copy is lacking those and ends at page 264. Closely cut to page 25, with the catchword therefore illegible. The title page spells the author's name as Lindesay, although through time there have been many other spellings including Lindsay and Lyndsay. Sir David Lindsay was a Scottish poet and Lyon king of arms. The Lyon King of Arms was the highest heraldic office. His poetry reflects the spirit of the Renaissance, specifically as a makar. Of Lindsay's poems, he gained a great reputation for his writings. His longer poems represent the range of his literary talent. Lindsay's writings are regarded to be the first literary expression in Scotland of the Renaissance. Works to this volume include 'Of the Monarchie', 'Of the Papingo' and 'To The King's Grace'. Of The Papyngo is written in a familiar medieval manner. It is a tract full of admonition to the court and clergy. Lindsay is also famous for producing a Scottish roll of arms known as The Lindsay of the Mount Roll. This roll contains 400 Scottish coats of arms and forms the basis of the official Scots heraldic registry in use today. In a full morocco binding with ornate gilt stamping to the spine and to the boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Prior catalogue information on this work is pasted to the front pastedown and to the recto of front free endpaper. Prior owne … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was part of a "mob of gentlemen who wrote with ease", who continued to produce their poetry in manuscripts, rather than in publication. As a consequence, some of Rochester's work deals with topical concerns, such as satires of courtly affairs in libels, to parodies of the styles of his contemporaries, such as Sir Carr Scroope. He is also notable for his impromptus, one of which is a teasing epigram on King Charles II: "We have a pretty witty king, Whose word no man relies on, He never said a foolish thing, And never did a wise one" To which Charles supposedly replied, "That's true, for my words are my own, but my act … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORTON, Richard
1696 Richard Morton Medicine & Surgery Phthisiologica Tuberculosis Cure Anorexia Richard Morton was a 17th-century English physician who was the first to state causes of tuberculosis and the presence of tubercles in the diseases of lungs. His most famous medical treatise was dedicated to this disease, known as phthisis. This work, ‘Phthisiologica’ was significant in that this disease was studied very little by doctors even though it was a major cause of death to citizens of London in the 1600s. It is also the first work to contain recognized medical descriptions anorexia. According to Garrison-Morton on ‘Phthisiologica,’ “the first application of the principles of pathology to the study of pulmonary tuberculosis. Morton showed that the formation of tubercles is a necessary part of the development of this lung disease, and pointed out that the tubercles often heal spontaneously. He noted the enlargement of the tracheal and bronchial glands in cases of pulmonary tuberculosis.” Other works featured in this 1696 edition of the works of Morton include: ‘De Morbis Universal’, ‘De Febribus Inflammatoriis’, and ‘Exercitationes de Morbis’. As usual, some leaves with browning. ¶ First appearance of the famous issue of Acta Eruditorum in which the 4 solutions by the 4 most eminent mathematicians at the time, were printed together. There were in all 5 solutions to the posed problem, and Newton's solution was first printed in the Philosophical Transactions (January 1697) and reprinted here. The solution proposed by L'Hopital, not printed here, was not published until 1988.The brachistochrone problem was posed by Johann Bernoulli in Acta Eruditorum in June 1696. He introduced the problem as follows: "I, Johann Bernoulli, address the most brilliant mathematicians in the world. Nothing is more attractive to intelligent people than an honest, challenging problem, whose possible solution will bestow fame and remain as a lasting monument. Following the example set by Pascal, Fermat, etc., I hope to gain the gratitude of the whole scientific community by placing before the finest mathematicians of our time a problem which will test their methods and the strength of their intellect. If someone communicates to me the solution of the proposed problem, I shall publicly declare him worthy of praise." Johann Bernoulli and Leibniz deliberately tempted Newton with this problem. Thevenot, Melchisedec
1696. Paris. Thomas Moette. Two volumes in folio (350 x 218 mm). A very difficult and tricky collation, available upon request, but more complete than most copies, as mentioned by Brunet (including the parts that would integrate the fifth part never published and the rare fragments, see collation for details). Contemporary calf, boards with gilt fillet and centre with arms of the Lindesiana; neatly and tastefully rebacked to style, with raised bands, tooled and lettered in gilt. Foxing spots and toning throughout, heavier to places, occasional soiling; folding maps generally in excellent condition but with a few tears here and there.- Amongst travel collections, Thevenot’s occupies a distinguished place, being one of the most complete and lavishly produced; its scope includes Africa, the Far East, South East Asia, America, amongst other places. The relation on Australia is certainly one of the most significant and primary sources of information on the Island. The collection is also of great American interest; it contains Palafox’s study on the natives, Acarette du Biscay’s relation of La Plata and Gage’s relation, which includes an important passage on Mexico, and is profusely illustrated. Asia and Africa are also well represented here, with actually more than half of the first volume being dedicated to it. Possibly the most important relation is that of Abel Tasman. The illustration is composed of maps, views and plates; the maps includes East Africa, the Indies, China, Hindustan, the Tasman map of Australia in its second issue –with rhumb lin … [Click Below for Full Description]
