Tituli honorum. Autore clarissimo & eruditissimo antiquario Joanne Seldeno interioris Templi, Armigero

impensis Jeremiae Schrey, & Henrici Johannis Meyer, Francofurti 1696 - Juxta editionem tertiam Londinensem anni 1672. cui accessisse dicuntur Seldeni emendationes & additamenta latine vertit notasque addidit Simon Johannes Arnold - in 8° - pp.48 nn + 690 + 76nn - Pergamena - Incisione in antiporta raffigurante l'artista - Incisioni che rappresentano: Princeps Walliae - Dvx - Marchio - Comes - Vice comes - Baro. Testatine, capilettera e finalini xilografici. Incisioni n.t. Pagine molto brunite - First and only Latin edition of this important early work by John Selden. It is translated by Simon John Arnold from the English edition, which appeared for the first time in London in 1614.The second enlarged English folio edition was published in the same city in 1631, the third also in London in 1672 with an eulogy by Ben Johnson. Selden's great historical work on nobility begins with a general discussion of titles and nobility. The following chapters consider the nobility of ancient Greece and Rome, Europe, the British Isles, the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox Churches, the Middle East and Asia. The final chapters survey various aspects of ceremony and precedence. The work is dedicated by Arnold to Margrave Albert Frideric of Brandenburg and Prussia, dated Sonnenburg, 24 August 1696, and by Selden to Edward Heyward, who was Selden's friend and chamber-fellow. After the dedications follow a laudatory poem by Ben Johnson and the preface by Selden. The work remained a comprehensive and trustworthy work for centuries. John Selden (1584-1654), was an English jurist, antiquary and scholar of England's ancient laws and constitution and scholar of Jewish law. He was known as a polymath of astounding intellectual depth and breadth; even John Milton, one of the greatest luminaries of 17th-century England, hailed Selden as "the chief of learned men reputed in this land". - Libro usato

        Opera Omnia duobus tomis distincta

Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Hackius, et al, 1696. First collected edition. Two volumes in one vols., Folio. Engraved title page, 2 double-page and 6 full-page engraved plates. Contemporary vellum with central gilt-stamped arms on upper cover. Superb copy . Giraldi, Giglio Gregorio (Lilius Gregorius Gyraldus) 1470-1552) was an Italian scholar and poet, born at Ferrara, "where he early distinguished himself by his talents and acquirements. he removed to Naples, hwere he lived on familiar terms with Jovianus Pontanus and Sannazaro; and subsequently to Lombardy, where he enjoyed the favour of the Mirandola family. At Miland in 1507 he studied Greek under Chalcondylas; and shortly afterwards, at Modena, he became tutor to Ercole (afterwards Cardinal) Rangone. About the year 1514 he removed to Rome, where, under Clement VII, he held the office of apostolic protonotary; but having in the sack of that city (1527) which almost coincided with the death of his patron Cardinal Rangone, lost all his property, he returned in poverty once more to Mirandola, whence again he was driven by the troubles consequent on the assassination of the reigning prince in 1533. The rest of his life was one long struggle with ill-health, poverty and neglect; and he is alluded to with sorrowful regret by Montaigne in one of his Essais (i. 34) as having, like Sebastian Castalio, ended his days in utter destitution. He died at Ferrara a man of very extensive erudition; and numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars. His HISTORIA marked a distinctly forward step in the systematic study of classical mythology; and by his treatises DE ANNIS ET MENSIBUS, and on the CALENDARIUM., he contributed to bring about the reform of the calendar, which was ultimately effected by Pope Gregory XIII. Giraldi was also an elegant Latin poet" (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed.)

A New Voyage to the East-Indies in the Year 1690 and 1691. Being a full Description of the Isles of Maldives, Cocos, Andamans, and the Isle of Ascension; and all the Forts and Garrisons now in possession of the French, with an Account of the Customs, Manners, and Habits of the Indians. By Monsieur Duquesne. To which is added, A New Description of the Canary Islands, Cape Verd, Senegal and Gambia &c. Done into English from the Paris Edition.

London: Daniel Dring, 1696 - Octavo (164 × 104 mm) Contemporary sprinkled sheep, unlettered, double blind rules. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked and with some skillful restoration to the corners, light browning, slight stain to the fore-edge which does not carry to the margins, a very good copy. 2 folding maps, and 5 engraved plates. First editions in English. The first part is a translation of Pouchot de Chantassin's Relation du Voyage et Retour des Indes Orientales pendant les Années 1690 & 1691. Par un Garde de la Marine Servant sur le Bord de Monsieur Duquesne (Paris, 1692). His name is not given in this translation, but appears in the privilege to the French edition. "The author was employed in French factory posts set up in India, and travelled amongst the India Ocean Islands" (NMM). Pouchot's account of the fight "with fourteen Dutch and English ships" at Fort St. George (pp. 96–105) is contested by Dampier in A New Voyage, explaining that he feels obliged to relate the story (which was given to him by "the Gunner's Mate of Capt. Heath's Ship, a very sensible Man") because "there is such a plausible Story made of it in Captain Duquesne's Late Voyage to the East-Indies" (I, p. 522). Dampier describes a rather inconclusive and desultory engagement, with the Dutch and English "fleet" being an accidental gathering of heavily laden and under-armed merchantmen, rather than the well-organized force under two admirals portrayed in the French account published here. The second part is a translation of Le Maire's Les voyages du Sieur Le Maire aux îles Canaries, Cap-Verd, Sénégal et Gambie sous Monsieur Dancourt (1695). Le Maire was a surgeon with the Compagnie d'Afrique; his well-observed narrative contains probably the first account of the Canary Islands written by a visitor, and perhaps more importantly his work remains an key source for the study of 17th-century West Africa, interactions between Africans and Europeans, and aspects of the slave trade. Imp. James Knapton, at the Crown.

"Here, in the songs of the East Prussian poets, the endeavors of the musical poets found their fulfillment. He, together with Claudius who was spiritually related to him, is one of the rare examples of a man born in straitened circumstances, living in a very limited milieu and finding his strength precisely in this situation" (Faber du Faur). The Entire Works..., newly made English from the originals: wherein the history of acute and chronic diseases, and the safest and most effectual methods of treating them, are faithfully, clearly, and accurately delivered. To which are added, explanatory and practical notes, from the best medicinal writers.

First edition of Swan?s translation, and the first publication of Samuel Johnson's seven-page ?Life of Dr. Sydenham.? The publisher of this edition, Edward Cave, was the originator of the Gentleman?s Magazine, which printed some of Samuel Johnson?s first published work. It seems likely that Swan was introduced to Cave who commissioned this translation and then commissioned a biography from Johnson. The ?Life? was reprinted in the Gentleman's Magazine later in the year (December).Swan?s was the second edition in English of Sydenham?s complete works, after Pechey?s of 1696, but it was Swan?s edition that became the main English source for Sydenham?s thoughts until that of R.G. Latham in two volumes (1848?"50) superseded it. ?The sound judgement and acute observations of Thomas Sydenham, the English Hippocrates, freed clinical medicine from the last vestiges of medievalism, and set the pattern for further progress?

Rare.

In a Letter to a Member of Parliament, 1691. London: for Awnsham and John Churchill, 1696.[and]Short Observations on a Printed Paper, Intituled, For encouraging the Coining Silver Money in England, and after for keeping it here. [1695][and]Further Considerations Concerning Raising the Value of Money. Wherein Mr. Lowndesís Arguments for it in his late Report concerning An Essay for the Amendment of the Silver Coins, are particularly Examined. London: Printed for A. and J. Churchil, 1695.ESTC lists two variants: one has \"By John Locke, Esq;\" on the title-page, \'Further Considerations\' dated 1695, and 111 pages. The other issue has \"By Mr. John Locke\" on the title-page, \"Further Considerations\" dated 1696, and 112 pages. This copy is a combination of the two, with \'Further Considerations\' dated 1695 and \"By Mr. John Locke\" on the title-page.ìëThe Great Recoinageí controversy of the 1690s was the impetus for Lockeís writings on mercantile and monetary theory. In the 1660s Sir Josiah Child had argued that the legal rate of interest should be lowered. It was still a topic for political discussion in the early 1690s: Child was still pressing the argument, and was supported by London merchants. Locke however defended a legal rate of interest but refused to fix it below the current rates. This was the occasion for his publishing Some Considerations of the Consequences of the Lowering of Interest and Raising the Value of Money in 1692. When William Lowndes, Secretary of the Treasury, proposed in 1695 to raise the nominal value of coins, Locke slightly revised Some Considerations and also published two further pamphlets, Short Considerations, and Further Considerations. At that time gold and silver coins had a value equivalent to their metal content, representing nothing but their silver or gold quantity. Locke rejected devaluation, basing his argument on this ëcommodity theoryí of money. He considered ëraising of the denomination or the increase of alloyí to be debasement and fraudî (Yolton).ìLockeís second major essay, Further Considerations Concerning Raising the Value of Money (1695), while it reiterated many of his earlier arguments, was mostly concerned with the issue of recoinage. Locke took issue with a proposal to devalue the official coinage by 20 per cent and argued strongly for recoining at the old standard the currently circulating coins debased by clipping and normal wear and tear. Money, Locke argued was equivalent to gold and silver. People contracted for gold and silver and a government stamp was simply an assurance of the specie content of official coins. Hence, a devaluation would only confuse trade and cause an increase in prices denominated in terms of pounds and shillingsî (The New Palgrave).Einaudi. Goldsmiths\'. Kress.HBS 66981RSL.$11,000

        The Regulating Silver Coin:

London: Henry Bonwick,, 1696. Made Practicable and Easie To The Government And Subject. Humbly submitted to the consideration of both Houses of Parliament. By a Lover of his Country. Octavo (188 × 115 mm). Rebound with blue boards and blue cloth spine, lettered in black, cream endpapers, edges speckled red. First gathering with diminishing water stain, small chips to edges of title page, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Pratt's contribution to the debate surrounding the recoinage of 1696 was paid for by the Treasury and broadly supported William Lowndes' case for devaluation. Pratt suggests that coin has not just extrinsic value, but a third "real" value, "adherent to the Species, with respect to time and place".

Small 8vo (15 x 9.5 cm). 19th-century(?) sheepskin parchment.

Bierens de Haan 902; Muller, Pop. proza 1050; STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy); cf. Bywater & Yamey, pp. 103-104. Second copy located of the 1696 edition of Dirck de Hollander's standard revision of a standard Dutch mathematical exercise book (with answers) for use in schools. The present edition describes itself as the fifth, but is at least the tenth and probably little changed from the 1685 edition, which also called itself the fifth. All 17th-century editions are very rare, the STCN recording 3 copies of one (1664) and no more than 2 copies of any other (some are not recorded in the STCN at all). The simple assignments are designed to teach basic arithmetic and bookkeeping for practical commercial purposes. David Cock was an Arnhem school master, active as such in at least the years 1641 to 1652. His present text book was his most successful work, with many further editions and adaptations to 1799.Slightly browned, but still in good condition. Boards slightly warped. A valuable window into 17th-century Dutch education and training for trade and commerce.

Fine armorial engraving on title, engraved vignettes, & 11 folding engraved plates. 9 p.l., 181, [1] pp., 1 leaf. Large 4to, cont. speckled calf (upper joint very carefully repaired at head & foot, minor rubbing), spine richly gilt. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1696. First edition of the first textbook of the differential calculus and a very controversial book. The Marquis de l'Hospital (1661-1704), was among the earliest pupils of Jean Bernoulli who, in 1691, spent some months at his house in Paris for the purpose of teaching him the new calculus, the knowledge of which was then confined to Newton, Leibniz, and the two elder Bernoullis. There was at that time no textbook on the subject and the credit for putting together the first treatise which explained the principles and the use of the method is due to l'Hospital. The book had a wide circulation and went through many editions; it brought the differential notation into general use in France and helped to make it known throughout Europe. The preface is of great interest for the history of the calculus and the early phase of the Newton-Leibniz controversy on its invention. This first edition is a very rare book. Very good copy. Discrete embossed ownership stamp on title. ❧ D.S.B., VIII, pp. 304-05. Smith, History of Mathematics, I, p. 384. Babson, Supp., p. 30. .

François, Espagnols, Allemands, Portugais, Anglois, Holandois, Persans, Arabes & autres Orientaux. Nouvelle Edition, Augmentée de plusieurs Relations curieuses

Paris: Thomas Moette, 1696. Five parts in two volumes, folio; altogether around 1500 pp.; with 15 folding maps and charts, including large folding maps of Australia, China, the Pacific, with the Philippines and Japan, and the map of Edso, North Japan (which is often lacking), full-page portrait, four full and ten folding or double-page engraved plates of costumes, plants, animals, alphabets etc., 46 full-page woodcut plates of Mexican inscriptions and pictograms, a woodcut, 12 engravings and several tables in the text; contemporary French mottled calf, sides bordered in gilt, spines (sympathetically rebacked) gilt in compartments between raised bands, red morocco labels; an attractive and fresh copy. FINISHED. First complete edition, with Tasman and Pelsaert. An excellent set of the rare, best and first complete edition of one of the most important of all travel collections, lavishly illustrated, and especially significant for the first appearance of numerous descriptions of the Pacific, the Far East, Australia and the Philippines. This was the first major work on Australia and the Pacific to receive a wide European readership. It includes a significant reference to early Chinese visits to the "Terre Australe" long before the arrival of Europeans (preface, 'Avis sur le dessein, & sur l'ordre de ce recueil', ã3v): 'Le Terre Australe… a esté découverte à plusieurs fois… Melchisédech Thévenot (ca. 1620-1692) was custodian of the Royal Library from 1684 to his death, and "was in a particularly advantageous position to review the latest travel literature, and to have it translated and published by the royal printers. The Relations is rich in illustrations and maps reproduced or adapted from the Dutch, Latin, English, and Iberian originals. It also includes translations from a few Persian, Arabic, and other Oriental sources preserved in the libraries of Leyden and the Vatican and in private collections" (Donald Lach, Asia in the Making of Europe, III.1., pp. 410-11). Sets of the work, containing all five parts, and particularly all of the required maps, are of great rarity. When complete, as is this excellent copy, the geographical scope of the collection is nearly universal, taking in the Americas, China, Japan, Siam, the Philippines, Mongolia, India, Tartary, Egypt, Persia, Arabia, Asia Minor and Russia. Virtually all the component parts are enriched by illustration, the choice of material sometimes unpredictable and quite idiosyncratic: it ranges from detailed charts of coastlines suitable for navigational purposes, and a number of cartographically important maps, to depictions of botanical specimens, exotic cultural practices and writing systems. The range and quirky variety makes this one of the visual feasts of travel literature. An important inclusion in Thévenot's collection is his translation of Pelsaert's account of his discovery of Australia, documenting the experiences of the earliest European settlers on the continent and describing the Aboriginal people for the first time. Pelsaert recounts details of the wreck of the Batavia and his subsequent struggle with a mutinous crew. Accompanying the Pelsaert account is the rare and famous map of Abel Tasman's discoveries, 'one of the earliest charts devoted entirely to Australia and the first French map of the continent' (Davidson). The first published result of Tasman's great voyages, it was Thévenot's map which gave the world the first clear idea of the shape and location of the new fifth continent. The Tasman map appeared in at least four different states: in this copy it is in its third state, with corrections, and with the addition of the Tropic of Capricorn and rhumb lines. This is an earlier version than the fourth and final state more often seen in copies of the 1696 edition. This set also includes the two-part map of Northern Japan which is almost always missing. "A majority of Thévenot's relations pertain to the countries, peoples, and natural world of Asia, for he aimed quite openly to provide the French with the latest and best materials on navigation, trade, and life in the East. In addition to voyages previously published elsewhere, the Relations includes in Volume I an extract from a journal prepared in connection with the Dutch embassy to China in 1655-57, an account of the Dutch loss of Formosa in 1663, and a part of Aleixo da Motta's rutter of the East Indies translated from a Portuguese manuscript. Of particular importance for Sumatra is the memoir of General Augustin de Beaulieu on his East Indian voyage of 1620-22, contained in Volume II. This is followed by a series of accounts and maps relating to the Philippines and other islands such as Yezo (Hokkaido), as well as a map of the Indian Ocean prepared in 1649 by Joáo Teixeira, the royal cosmographer at Lisbon. Thévenot translated materials on China and its flora by the Jesuit Michael Boym, which appear at the end of Volume II. Volume III begins with Johann Nieuhof's account of the Dutch embassy of 1655 to China; it includes a number of spectacular engravings and a map of the route followed by the Dutch from Canton to Peking. Small amounts of fresh information on China's neighbours appear in Volume III, especially on the Mongol language. Volume II of the later editions includes what may well be the Decas secunda of Martino Martini's synopsis of China's dynastic history to the year A.D. 1666 as well as a Manchu vocabulary and a small Chinese grammar…" (Lach). Thévenot's work has one of the most complicated publication histories, since it was published over the course of more than thirty years, and a comparison of copies, even in contemporary bindings like that offered here, inevitably demonstrates some variation in organization and contents. A very full collation of this complete copy has been prepared and is available on request.
