BOETHIUS.
London: printed by J.D. for Awnsham and John Churchill; and Francis Hildyard bookseller in York, 1695. Octavo (185 x 114 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, later label to spine lettered in gilt, panels roll-tooled in blind with blind cornerpieces, red speckled edges. Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst with his pencilled notes on the pastedown and front free endpaper, contemporary ownership signature to title page, ink note on first page of preface. Spine and covers lightly rubbed and marked, front joint just starting to crack but still firm, hinge of frontispiece split. Overall a very good copy. Engraved portrait frontispiece. First edition of this translation, which includes "The Life of Boetius" and "The Testimonies of several writers concerning Boethius translated" in the preliminaries. The translator, Richard Graham, first Viscount Preston (1648–1695), clearly identified closely with Boethius, having himself been sentenced to death for his Jacobite activities. He saved himself from the scaffold in 1691 (and earned himself opprobrium) by testifying against his accomplices. The translation was his occupation during his last years in retirement at Nunnington Hall in Yorkshire. The preface contains a number of references to his situation, including the complaint that his judges had been more lenient than his friends, who despised him for giving way under trials that they had never undergone. Delisle 54; Renouard, Badius Ascensius II, p. 202, no. 11; Wing B3433. [Attributes: First Edition]

Macdonell & Manson, Great Jurists of the World, pp. 305 ff. First edition. This is a very valuable history of the reign, as well as a monumental biography, of Frederick Wilhelm, Elector of Brandenburg, under whose rule Prussia recovered greatly from the devastation of the Thirty Years War. Samuel von Pufendorf, German jurist, statesman and historian. His historical works are numerous and the present one belongs to the most important of these works. Not only are they based on a thorough use of the archives, but they also set forth a view of events marked by great vision and keen political insight. The present work was written when Pufendorf was invited by Elector Frederick William to come to Berlin, where many Huguenot refugees, after the Revocation of Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV, were being welcomed into what became known as The Refuge. , 1695. 1695. Map. Engraving. Original hand coloring. Image size 15 7/8 x 21 inches. Map. Engraving. Original hand coloring. Image size 15 7/8 x 21 inches. Beautifully composed double hemisphere world map on a polar projection. Nieu Nederland noted on the East Coast and a hint of the Great Lakes is noted. California is shown as an island. An incomplete Australia is attached to New Guinea. The sun, an armillary sphere and the moon emerge from clouds behind the title cartouche. Eve materializes from Adam in a swamp like waste land. Then Adam, surrounded by a large variety of animals is about to leave the Garden of Eden. Mat burn around neat line otherwise good condition with stunning original color.Willem Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prolific Dutch mapmaker who started one of the most famous map publishing firms of the 17th century. It was at this time that the Dutch controlled the map trade, and their ornate and beautiful maps had immense popularity. Blaeu was instrumental in driving this dominance in his lifetime, and this legacy was continued by his sons. This series was published by his son Johannes (c. 1599-1673), who took over the business upon his father's death. The map was not included in any Blaeu atlas. The studio fire of February 22, 1672, and Blaeu's death the following year prevented its inclusion in an atlas. The plate was acquired by Gerard Valck, who had Blaeu's imprint erased and his own added. The previous imprint is still visible beneath Valck's name. Brunet I, 711 (spätere Ausgaben).
Esemplare in buone condizioni." "Decorative and highly detailed map of Corfu, with 9 inset views of Castles and Cities on the island, along with a decorative cartouche and two large coats of arms. Coronelli's map of Corfu is one of the most decorative and sought after of all maps of Corfu. The present example is an unusally strong dark impression, with wide clean margins. Example taken form the Coronelli's ""Isolario"" showing at the back the descriptive text and the views of the town ""Veduta della Fortezza Vecchia di Corfu verso Ostro"" and ""Fortezza Vecchia di Corfu"". Coronelli was possibly the best Italian mapmaker of his time. He made globes, including one 5 meters in diameter for Louis XIV. From Coronelli's rare Atlante Veneto, one of the most decorative and ornate of all 17th Century Atlases. The map exhibits the fine engraving style of this coveted Venetian Atlas. Copperplate, good condition."

Ottimo esemplare (sporadiche e leggere bruniture).

1695. Antique print, titled: 'A New Gradually Encreasing Compass-Map of the Coming in of the Channel, or the Heads ' - A detailed chart of the part of the Channel / La Manche between Boulogne to Calais on the French side, and Camber/Dungeness to Dover on the English side. The text is given in three languages (English, French and Dutch). Description: Published by G. van Keulen (Amsterdam). Johannes van Keulen (1654-1711) - Gerard van Keulen (1678-c.1727). The Dutch produced a remarkable number of enterprising and prolific map and chart makers but not even the Blaeu and Jansson establishments could rival the vigour of the van Keulen family whose business was founded in 1680 and continued under their name until 1823 The firm was founded by Johannes van Keulen who was registered as a bookseller in Amsterdam in 1678. In 1680 he published the first part of his Zee Atlas which, over the years, was expanded to 5 volumes and continued in one form or another until 1734. More ambitious and with a far longer and more complicated life was his book of sea charts, the Zee-Fakkel, published in 1681-82 Although the firm was founded by Johannes van Keulen, he was primarily a publisher; it was his son, Gerard, a talented engraver and mathematician, Hydrographer to the East India Company, who became the mainspring of the business, which not only published charts but also books on every aspect of geography, navigation and nautical matters.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'N. de Vries'.
