CAMDEN, William
"The early bird gets the worm." - William Camden An exceedingly rare and valuable first edition of William Camden's 'Britannia' translated and edited by Edmund Gibson. This work is considered one the greatest achievements of English scholarship and is the first topographical survey of Great Britain! Camden first published this book in Latin in 1586, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, and an English edition did not appear until early 17th-century. It gained immense popularity, both in its original printing and English forms. The original 1610 English translation is considered inferior to this 1695 Gibson edition. It was filled with errors and inaccuracies that Gibson did not include in this printing. (Oxford DNB). However, this incredible edition includes impressive engravings including some of the earliest views of Stonehenge and ancient coins and artifacts! This book was the first to show a study of Roman Britain, and was the first county-by-county survey of Great Britain. [Attributes: First Edition]

MOLL, Herman
In the mid-16th-century, Abraham Ortelius produced the first Modern atlas known as the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. It was immensely popular throughout Europe and was reissued in many languages for centuries. This 1695 printing by Herman Moll was the first English edition of an incredible atlas; however, this work is so much more than a collection of Ortelius maps. This book includes extensive descriptions of animals, as well as travel guides for various towns, and Native American tribes in the New World. In addition to maps, other illustrations feature depictions of fortifications, compasses, navigational phenomena, rivers, and thorough descriptions of Great Britain. [Attributes: First Edition]

1695. SFONDRATI, CAELESTINO (1644-1696). Innocentia vindicata, in qua gravissimis argumentis ex S. Thoma petitis oftenditur, Angelicum Doctorem pro Immaculato Conceptu Deiparae sensisse & scripsisse. Pars prior theologica. Abbey of St. Gall, Switzerland: Excudebat Jacobus Muller, 1695. First Edition. The most important emblem book to be printed in Switzerland, and highly praised for its artistic sense, the book is ultimately a defense of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, using the arguments of St. Thomas Aquinas and other sources. The first half is dedicated to the theological arguments, and the second half (the "Symbols") is comprised of 46 baroque emblems framed in elaborate cartouches, each depicting some quality of the Blessed Virgin. For example, the celebrated ship "Victoria" of Ferdinand Magellan is seen as a symbol of Mary's womb which preserves those on board despite the tempests of the sea. The engravings by Gabriel Ehinger were cut in Augsburg, but the book itself was printed at the ancient Monastery of St. Gall. Folio (33 x 21cm), folding frontispiece, 120pp., 46 plates. Frontispiece stained, with edgewear; occasional light foxing throughout, last two plates detached but present. Bound in contemporary vellum, joints cracked, split to lower and upper spine. [Landwehr, German, 544; Praz 496f]. [Attributes: First Edition]

BEAUVAIS, Gilles-François.
Borba de Moraes, p. 93; De Backer & Sommervogel I, col. 1080, 4; Chadenat 754; not in Bosch; Sabin. First edition of a French biography of the Jesuit martyr Ignacio de Azevedo, by Father Gilles-François Beauvais (1695-1773), who modelled his book on the Italian biography by Father Cabral (pseudonym of Giulio Cesare Cordara) (1704-1785), published at Rome in 1743 under the title Relazione della vita e martirio del venerabile padre Ignazio de Azevedo. In the present biography, dedicated to King Stanislaus I of Poland, Beauvais made several additions, for example the "Martyre du Vénérable Père Diaz et de ses Compagnons", pp. 193-262. Most of the book is devoted to the life of the martyr Ignatius de Azevedo from Porto (1528-1570), who worked in Brazil as Visitator for the Jesuit Order. On 15 July 1570, he and his 39 companions at sea were killed by French Calvinist pirates near the Canary Islands. In 1854, these "40 martyrs of Brazil" were canonized. Beauvais's biography may be regarded as a loose translation, with additional material, of Cordara's biography, which was translated into Spanish in the same year and into German in 1856. A second edition of Beauvais's version was published at Brussels in 1854. The martyrdom of Ignacio de Azevedo and his companions has inspired many literary works up to the present day. Some faint marginal stains, a small corner of the last 2 leaves (and larger corners of the following endleaves) restored, not approaching the text. Boards scratched. In good condition. London: Printed for J. Salisbury at the Rising Sun in Cornhill and J. Harris at the Harrow, 1695. Mild toning throughout, and a single wormhole through the bottom right corner of the text block. Else a neat, pleasing copy of this important and early work on education, which ESTC lists at only 6 institutions in the US. Fully self-educated, Tryon was determined to improve English children's access to schooling in the humanities and sciences. Influenced by the works of Agrippa and Pythagoras, he believed that individuals' bodily and intellectual well-being were tied. One could not learn properly if hungry, tired, or under physical duress; in this sense, A New Method of Educating Children revised the Latin grammar school tradition of ruling classrooms by the rod. "The Master and Tutors shall neither Whip, Beat, nor shew Anger or Passion toward any child, be he never so dull: But instead of such correction shall take the dull Child aside, and Commend and Praise him for his Endeavors; inform him of how many men of mean Birth have advanced themselves...and by these Means they shall excite and prompt him on to an honorable Ambition." For Tryon, instructors succeed in properly shaping children's minds when they recall that their students are in fact children. "The bodies and … [Click Below for Full Description]

GREGORY, David.
Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1695. First edition of this rare work, famous today for its suggestion that an achromatic compound lens might be formed by combining simples lenses of different media. The use of ‘achromatic doublets' was a crucial step in the further development of telescopes and microscopes. From Marischal College, Aberdeen, David Gregory (1659-1708) entered Edinburgh University, graduating M.A. on 28 November 1683. A month prior to his graduation he was elected to the Chair of Mathematics, at one time occupied by his uncle, the great mathematician James Gregory, whose <i>Optica promota</i> (1663) had described a reflecting telescope which used parabolic mirrors. As a professor, David Gregory was the first to lecture publicly on the Newtonian philosophy. His lecture notes show that they covered a broad range of subjects including geodesy, optics, dynamics, and various branches of mathematics. Increasingly under attack by his fellow professors at Edinburgh for his radical political views, in 1691 he went to London where he was introduced to Newton and recommended to John Flamsteed, the first astronomer royal. In that same year, Edward Barnard retired from the Savilian professorship of Astronomy at Oxford; backed by Newton's recommendation of him as ‘very well skilled in Analysis & Geometry both new & old ... understands Astronomy very well ... & is respected the greatest Mathematician in Scotland', and with Flamsteed's support, Gregory was elected to the chair in face of strong opposition from Edmond Halley. <br/><br/> As Gregory tells us in the preface, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Internally some browning and brownspotting. Overall a nice and tight copy. [Bernoulli paper:] pp. 264-69. [Leibniz-paper:] pp. 45-47. [Entire volume: (2), 603, (1) pp. + plates]. ¶ First printing of the famous 1696-edition of Acta Eruditorum in which Johann Bernoulli published a challenge to the best mathematicians:"Let two points A and B be given in a vertical plane. To find the curve that a point M, moving on a path AMB , must follow such that, starting from A, it reaches B in the shortest time under its own gravity."Johann adds that this curve is not a straight line, but a curve well known to geometers, and that he will indicate that curve, if nobody would do so that year. Later that year Johann corresponded directly with Leibniz regarding his challenge. Leibniz solved the problem the same day he received notice of it, and almost correctly predicted a total of only five solutions: from the two Bernoullis, himself, L'Hospital, and Newton. Leibniz was convinced that the problem could only be solved by a mathematician who mastered the new field of calculus. (Galileo had formulated and given an incorrect solution to the problem in his Dialogo). But by the end of the year Johann had still not received any other solutions. However, Leibniz convinced Johann that he should extend the deadline to Easter and that he should republish the problem. Johann now had copies of the problem sent to Jo … [Click Below for Full Description]

The work was first published in 1689 in three volumes, an undertaking for which Louis XIV settled on him a pension of 2000 livres. A fourth volume, Le Droit public, was published in 1697, a year after his death. The major work of Jean Domat, The civil Laws in their natural order, marked profoundly the doctrine of the ancient French law. It was an attempt to establish a system of French law on the basis of moral principles. Supporter of a Cartesian juridical order, Domat builds a work of private law hard marked by a Jusnaturaliste and Romanist footprint. Domat's grand plan was to set out a scheme of Christian law for France in a rationalist view. in three volumes, under the title of Lois civiles dans leur ordre naturel (1689), an undertaking for which Louis XIV settled on him a pension of 2000 livres.

Lightly rubbed, upper board a trifle warped, small chip at head of spine, else a clean copy. Without RFEP, manuscript shelfmarks to FFEP, with the bookplate of 'The Most Honble.William Marquis of Lothian' to both FEP and REP. Translated from the first part (no further was published in English) of Die Betooverde Wereld (Amsterdam, 1691-3), by Dutch Reformed pastor and Cartestian natural philosopher Balthasar Bekker (1634-98). A significant work of Enlightenment rationalism; Die Betooverde Wereld formed a critical examination of supposed supernatural phenomena, debunking belief in the spirit world and possession by the devil, and attacking consequent persecution of witchcraft. In questioning established theological doctrine and prevailing social practice, Bekker’s work provoked fierce reaction. He was tried for blasphemy and ejected from ministry, and his work, considered to contain atheistic views, banned in some more orthodox Dutch towns. Die Betooverde Wereld was not without its cheerleaders, however, with Eric Walten vigorously defending the work until his own death whilst in prison for his blasphemous support of Bekker’s analysis. As well as leading to the decline of witchcraft trials in Europe, and further afield, this work is an early example comparative religion (featuring the supernatural theologies of ancient and contemporary societies alike, including Mexico and Peru), and of the growing gulf between religion and Enlightenment natu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed, and Sold by John Whitlock, London, 1695. [44], 129pp, [1]. Late nineteenth-century calf, tooled in gilt and blind, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed and marked. Contemporary ink annotations to foot of title-page and margin of p.65, errata on terminal page struck-through in ink, some occasional shaving to affecting running-titles, signatures, and catch-words, very occasionally touching text, without loss of sense. A rare treatise on divine apparitions based upon the accounts of the revelations that Rosamond Julianna, Countess of Asseburg, had claimed to have witnessed, translated from the German ('High Dutch') of Johann Wilhelm Petersen (1649-1727), Lutheran pastor in Lunenberg who was deposed over his belief of her these claims. The English translator of this work is unknown, whilst the lengthy English 'preface to the reader' is attributed to English physician and founding member of the Philadelphians Francis Lee (1661 â€" 1719). Lee, like Petersen had studied the writings of English Christian mystic Jane Lead, whilst studying at Leyden. It seems, however, unlikely that the claim set out on the title page (and mentioned in an early ink note to the foot of the same leaf) as to the translator's identity, 'now set forth in English by the Editor of the LAWS of PARADISE, newly Published', i.e. Jane Lead herself, has any veracity.
