As also, The Effects Men are able to produce by their Communication. Divided into IV Parts...Translated from a French Copy, approved of and subscribed by the Author's own Hand [London]. Translated from the first part (no further was published in English) of Die Betooverde Wereld (Amsterdam, 1691-3), by Dutch Reformed pastor and Cartestian natural philosopher Balthasar Bekker (1634-98). A significant work of Enlightenment rationalism; Die Betooverde Wereld formed a critical examination of supposed supernatural phenomena, debunking belief in the spirit world and possession by the devil, and attacking consequent persecution of witchcraft. In questioning established theological doctrine and prevailing social practice, Bekker's work provoked fierce reaction. He was tried for blasphemy and ejected from ministry, and his work, considered to contain atheistic views, banned in some more orthodox Dutch towns. Die Betooverde Wereld was not without its cheerleaders, however, with Eric Walten vigorously defending the work until his own death whilst in prison for his blasphemo … [Click Below for Full Description]

THE LETTERS OF ... discusses the printing history of these letters, pointing put that although they are almost entirely "impostures" and have little to do with the original Latin from which they purportedly derive, they nonetheless "came to have a decisive role in how Abelard and Heloise were understood for well over a hundred years. John Hughes' English translation of these into English became the standard in the English-speaking world, and even as late as 1940 editions of the English versions appeared. Alexander Pope based his famous "Eloisa to Abelard" on Hughes translation Jacques Alluis' account of the tragic, legendary love affair between Peter Abelard -- the preminent scholastic theologian of his day -- and Heloise, his brilliant pupil, was first printed in 1675. In 1695 publisher Pierre Chayer began to issue separately the three letters to Abelard from Héloïse, and the three to Héloïse from Abelard; of the six, only the first letter had been printed before (in 1693 by Chayer); he also reprinted Jacques Alluis' account of the tragic affair in uniform format, with separate title-pages and pagination. LOCKE, John
London: Awnsham and John Churchil ..., and Samuel Manship, 1695. 1695 John LOCKE Essay Concerning Human Understanding Philosophy Tabula Rasa"I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts." - John Locke The very first modern attempt to analyze human knowledge! (PMM)After studying medicine under the teaching of Thomas Sydenham, John Locke began his journey of philosophical thinking that would develop into his most famous written work. 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding,' is one of the most important books on the development and cultivation of human understanding and knowledge. It is in this work that Locke first describes the idea of 'blank slate' of the mind or 'tabula rasa.' Locke's 'Essay' is known to have directly influenced famous philosophers such as David Hume and George Berkeley.According to the 'Printing and the Mind of Man',"Locke's first task was to ascertain 'the original certainty and extent of human knowledge' and, excluding 'the physical consideration of the mind, to show how far it can comprehend the universe'. His conclusion is that though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension, it can at least be 'sufficient'; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance, and to some extent control our own destinyThis incredibly rare and valuable third edition is known to have been printed with only 800 copies. An exceedingly rare print run for such a popular workItem number: #5356Price: $2500LOCKE, JohnAn essay concerning humane understanding: in four booksLondon : Printed for Awnsham an … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOCKE, John (1632-1704)]
Printed for Awnsham and John Churchil, London, 1695. [4], 304pp. Contemporary calf, rebacked Provenance: Joseph Mazzini Wheeler (signature) First edition of Locke's most important contribution to theological literature and a noted influence on Thomas Jefferson's bill for establishing religious freedom. Locke here presents his arguments for faith being based in reason. This copy with provenance to Joseph Mazzini Wheeler (1850-1898), a noted English atheist and freethought writer. Curiously, while Locke promoted religious toleration, he believed that atheists, without a belief in a higher deity, were incapable of honoring the social contract upon which their legal rights were based. LA CROIX, Francois de [Petit, or the younger]
Paris: Chez P. Herissant, 1695. 'La Turquie Cretienne' is a curious, late 17th-century book by Francois de la Croix - curious in the sense that it appears to be revised version of a work entitled 'Etat Present des Nations & des Eglises Grecque' by an author named La Croix. It is uncertain if the authors of these works are the same man or related to one another. Either way, this work is an important work on Christianity and Catholicism in the Middle East, Greece, Armenia, and in the Ottoman Empire. This work; however, does not portray the Middle East, especially Istanbul (Constantinople), kindly. In fact, La Croix and his anti-Islamic views, is known to have wanted to burn Istanbul to the ground! (McCabe, p. 141). He even came up with his own plan of how to bombard the city from the sea, in which he formally submitted to Louis XIV. This fine work is filled with accounts of religious sacraments, rituals, communions and celebrations, as well as physical and geographical descriptions of these places.

[ALLARD, CAREL].
, . . NCC (1 copy of Cleynhens ed.); Rijksmuseum.nl (this ed.); WorldCat (2 copies of Cleynhens ed., incl. that in NCC). Very rare broadsheet with an engraving showing a 17th-century, three-masted Dutch merchant ship and two small sloops. The sails of the ship are furled, giving a clear view of its rigging. Below the illustration are three columns with keys referring to over a 100 parts of the ship and its rigging. The engraving and keys were first published in Allard's Nieuwe Hollandse scheeps-bouw (1695), an essential primary source for the terminology and practice of ship-building in the Dutch golden age. Another edition of the present broadsheet was published around the same time by Bernard Cleynhens in Haarlem. We could only locate three other copies worldwide of the two separately published broadsheet editions combined. The print was formerly in a passepartout, resulting in some minor difference in colour in the margins, otherwise in very good condition, with only some old folds and minor frays.

John Locke The very first modern attempt to analyze human knowledge! (PMM) After studying medicine under the teaching of Thomas Sydenham, John Locke began his journey of philosophical thinking that would develop into his most famous written work. An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, is one of the most important books on the development and cultivation of human understanding and knowledge. It is in this work that Locke first describes the idea of blank slate of the mind or tabula rasa. Locke s Essay is known to have directly influenced famous philosophers such as David Hume and George Berkeley. According to the Printing and the Mind of Man , Locke's first task was to ascertain 'the original certainty and extent of human knowledge' and, excluding 'the physical consideration of the mind, to show how far it can comprehend the universe'. His conclusion is that though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension, it can at least be 'sufficient'; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance, and to some extent control our own destiny This incredibly rare and valuable third edition is known to have been printed with only 800 copies. An exceedingly rare print run for such a popular work Item number: #5155 Price: $2500 LOCKE, John An essay concerning humane understanding: in four books London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchil ., and Samuel Manship, 1695. [Theology] ~ BEKKER, Balthazar The World Bewitch'd; or, An Examination of the Common Opinions concerning spirits: Their Nature, Power, Administration, and Operations. As also, The Effects Men are able to produce by their Communication. Divided into IV Parts...Translated from a French Copy, approved of and subscribed by the Author's own Hand [London]. Printed for R. Baldwin, 1695. 12mo. [84]. 264pp. With blank A1, and half-title. Contemporary speckled sheep, spine richly gilt. Lightly rubbed, upper board a trifle warped, small chip at head of spine, else a clean copy. Without RFEP, manuscript shelfmarks to FFEP, with the bookplate of 'The Most Honble.William Marquis of Lothian' to both FEP and REP.

Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Cruyl starter drawing and engraving views when he moved to Rome around 1664. His first works were his twenty one drawings, once kept in the Albertina in Vienna and nowadays divided between the Cleveland Museum and Rijksmuseum. The drawings actually are the counterpart of the subjects they depict for they were meant to be used for the realization of engravings. LA CROIX, Francois de [Petit, or the younger]
1695 The Turkish Christian La Croix Constantinople Turkey Ottoman Armenia ‘La Turquie Cretienne’ is a curious, late 17th-century book by Francois de la Croix – curious in the sense that it appears to be revised version of a work entitled ‘Etat Present des Nations & des Eglises Grecque’ by an author named La Croix. Item number: #5114 Price: $950 LA CROIX, Francois de [Petit, or the younger] La Turquie cretienne, sous la puissante protection de Louis le Grand, protecteur unique de cristianisme en Orient. MORDEN, Robert and BROWNE, Christopher
London, c1695. London,, c1695.. viz Virginia, Maryland, Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jarsey, New England, Newfoundland, New France &c Double-page engraved map (490 by 630mm to the neatline, full margins showing the plate mark). A rare, separately-published, early map of eastern North America west to the Mississippi River. One of the earliest obtainable English maps to focus on the entirety of English North America. This is the original state of a map made famous by John Senex in 1719. A nod to English imperial intentions, this map of the eastern part of North America notes coastal development while suggesting available lands in the undeveloped interior of the continent. It features a prominent, albeit fictitious, mountain range extending from Michigan into Florida and connecting with the Appalachians. The error remained on maps into the nineteenth century. The English colonies are shown drawn on recent cartography such as the Hermann map of Virginia and Reed map of William Reed's manuscript map of New England, and the recent grants of Pennsylvania and West New Jersey. The map includes an influential (though not completely positive) treatment of the Great Lakes, the aforementioned false transcontinental mountain range, a depiction of the Mississippi River, and many details of the English colonies. Morden's map was an early example of English cartographers contesting French claims to the North American interior: in addition to the American Midwest, Morden depicts much of New France as under English dominion. Nevertheless, the English colonies along the Atlantic S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fine and detailed plan of Ayuthaya in Thailand - sourced from the French embassy to Siam in 1685 - by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, the great seventeenth century Italian cartographer. A Minorite friar, cosmographer and cartographer, Coronelli (1640-1718) founded the first geographical society, the Accademia degli Argonauti. In 1678 he built a pair of globes for the Duke of Parma that attracted the attention of the French ambassador, César d'Estrée who subsequently invited Coronelli to Paris. There Coronelli built the pair of gigantic, 15-foot globes which he presented to Louis XIV in 1683 and which would bring him fame throughout Europe. Upon his return to Venice, Coronelli was contracted by Jean-Baptiste Nolin (1657-1725) to publish a replica of these globes, scaled down to a diameter of 3 -foot, and financed through subscription by members of the Argonauti.

BOETHIUS
1695 1ed English BOETHIUS Consolation of Philosophy Medieval Free Will Preston “Nothing is miserable unless you think it so; and on the other hand, nothing brings happiness unless you are content with it.” Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy “A golden volume not unworthy of the leisure of Plato or Tully.” – Edward Gibbon A rare edition of “The Consolation of Philosophy” by Boethius, a work that has been described as “the single most important and influential work on Medieval and early Renaissance Christianity and is the last great Western work of the Classical Period.” (‘Consolation of Philosophy’, Oxford 2000, introduction). This work in an imaginary dialogue between Boethius and the personification of philosophy, arguing that there is a higher power. Boethius engages questions such as the nature of predestination and free will, why evil men often prosper and good men fall into ruin, human nature, virtue, and justice. This 1695 edition is a rare analysis and commentary of the poetry of Boethius by Richard Graham, Lord Viscount of Preston, who supplemented his English translation with notes. It is the first edition of one of the best modern English translations. This translation is highly regarded because of the preface, which is filled with important allusions and ironic complaints against his judges who were too critical of him.

"The important 'Traité de mécanique' that La Hire published in 1695 represents a synthesis of his diverse theoretical and practical preoccupations. Although passed over by the majority of the historians of mechanics, this work marks a significant step toward the elaboration of a modern manual of practical mechanics, suitable for engineers of various disciplines. La Hire thus partially answered the wish expressed by Colbert in 1675 of seeing the Academy produce an exact description of all the machines useful in the arts and trades. La Hire furnished useful descriptions and put forth the suggestion (already made in his Traité des épicycloides) following Desargues, of adopting an epicycloidal profile for gear wheels" (DSB). DSB, VII, 576-9. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.
