Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Cruyl starter drawing and engraving views when he moved to Rome around 1664. His first works were his twenty one drawings, once kept in the Albertina in Vienna and nowadays divided between the Cleveland Museum and Rijksmuseum. The drawings actually are the counterpart of the subjects they depict for they were meant to be used for the realization of engravings. MOLL, Herman
1695. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. In the mid-16th-century, Abraham Ortelius produced the first Modern atlas known as the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. It was immensely popular throughout Europe and was reissued in many languages for centuries. This 1695 printing by Herman Moll was the first English edition of an incredible atlas; however, this work is so much more than a collection of Ortelius maps. This book includes extensive descriptions of animals, as well as travel guides for various towns, and Native American tribes in the New World. In addition to maps, other illustrations feature depictions of fortifications, compasses, navigational phenomena, rivers, and thorough descriptions of Great Britain. [Attributes: First Edition]

Esemplare in buone condizioni." "Decorative and highly detailed map of Corfu, with 9 inset views of Castles and Cities on the island, along with a decorative cartouche and two large coats of arms. Coronelli's map of Corfu is one of the most decorative and sought after of all maps of Corfu. The present example is an unusally strong dark impression, with wide clean margins. Example taken form the Coronelli's ""Isolario"" showing at the back the descriptive text and the views of the town ""Veduta della Fortezza Vecchia di Corfu verso Ostro"" and ""Fortezza Vecchia di Corfu"". Coronelli was possibly the best Italian mapmaker of his time. He made globes, including one 5 meters in diameter for Louis XIV. From Coronelli's rare Atlante Veneto, one of the most decorative and ornate of all 17th Century Atlases. The map exhibits the fine engraving style of this coveted Venetian Atlas. Crescenzo ONOFRI (Roma 1632 - dopo 1712)
[Click Below for Full Description]

CAMDEN, William
1695. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The early bird gets the worm." - William Camden An exceedingly rare and valuable first edition of William Camden's 'Britannia' translated and edited by Edmund Gibson. This work is considered one the greatest achievements of English scholarship and is the first topographical survey of Great Britain! Camden first published this book in Latin in 1586, dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, and an English edition did not appear until early 17th-century. It gained immense popularity, both in its original printing and English forms. The original 1610 English translation is considered inferior to this 1695 Gibson edition. It was filled with errors and inaccuracies that Gibson did not include in this printing. (Oxford DNB). However, this incredible edition includes impressive engravings including some of the earliest views of Stonehenge and ancient coins and artifacts! This book was the first to show a study of Roman Britain, and was the first county-by-county survey of Great Britain. [Attributes: First Edition]

London, Awnsham & John Churchil, 1695. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. [xx], 296, [iv] - being the prefact, text and index. A somewhat important work in Arthurian literature, and in speculative fiction in general. Whilst it was written in support of William of Orange, it still serves to help maintain the most famous of English myths. So however tedious the text is (I got through a couple of dozen pages), it is an important work and deserves to have its place retained in the study of the myth. Near fine, early if not contemporary boards - bound in full calf - rebacked somewhat recently with newer endpapers, though still themselves old. Some wear to the spine tips and where the rebacking has been undertaken. A couple of marginal notes. Leaves largely in good shape, tightly bound - a very attractive copy overall. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. If you'd like this service on cheaper items please utilise the expedited shipping. Frankfurt-on-Oder: Sumptibus Jeremiae Schrey, 1695. [2], 456 [i.e. 460], [36], 248 pp. Two parts with individual pagination; second part, De Successionibus, preceded by divisional title page. Quarto (8" x 6-1/2"). Contemporary vellum, blind frames and large central arabesques to boards, raised bands and early hand-lettered title to spine, endpapers renewed. Light soiling, corners and spine ends bumped, a few minor scuffs to rear board, some creases and edgewear to endleaves. Main title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, occasional light foxing to text, light soiling to title page. "102" in small recent hand to front pastedown, interior otherwise clean. * Later edition. A scarce edition of Selden's work on the laws of Jewish marriage and divorce, applying his more general theory of natural law, and approaching the views of Milton. It was first published in 1646. Speaking of this and other works dealing with Jewish customs the DNB says "[his] acquaintance with the original of the Old Testament and the ancient versions and commentaries which all these works display is very great. Light soiling, spine ends and corners bumped, boards slightly bowed, armorial bookplate to front pastedown, rear free endpaper neatly removed. Copperplate pictorial title page, main title page printed in red and black, woodcut decorate initials and text illustration. The plates depict the presentation of the Ten Commandments, elevations of the Temple of Jerusalem and praying angels in the Temple. Light toning to text, somewhat heavier on places, spark burns to a few leaves, woodcut ornament clipped from title page and replaced with blank paper at an early date, internally clean. A nice copy. * Fourth edition, one of two Schrey issues from 1695. First published in 1640, this is a landmark work in international law and natural law theory. James II, King of England. Parliament
Printed for J. Wickins; and to be sold by the Booksellers of, 1695. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Octavo. COLLATION: A-B4 C-F8 G-Q4, COMPLETE. [2], 19-176 pp. Attractive half calf antique, marbled boards, red morocco label gilt, compartments gilt with small tools. Very good. ¶ FIRST EDITION of these important Parliamentary debates, providing original and valuable documentation of the constitutional crisis that ensued during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. James II of England (a.k.a. James VII of Scotland), while fleeing to France, dropped the Great Seal of the Realm into the Thames. In Parliament the question was discussed whether he had forfeited the throne or had abdicated. The present volume offers detailed arguments for the both, but ultimately the latter designation was agreed upon, and in a full assembly of the Lords and Commons, it was resolved in spite of James's protest "that King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom, by breaking the original contract between king and people, and, by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons, having violated the fundamental laws, and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom, has abdicated the government, and that the throne is thereby vacant." The Scottish parliament pronounced a decree of forfeiture and deposition. ¶ In our copy the imprint reads "and to be sold" (in another issue the imprint reads "and sold"). ¶ References: Wing (2nd ed.) With an Exact Account of what God hath bestowed upon a Noble Maid, from her Seventh Year, until Now, MDCXCI. Written Originally in High-Dutch, and now set forth in English by the Editor of the laws of paradise, newly Published London. Printed, and Sold by John Whitlock, 1695. 8vo. [44], 129pp, [1]. Late nineteenth-century calf, tooled in gilt and blind, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed and marked. Contemporary ink annotations to foot of title-page and margin of p.65, errata on terminal page struck-through in ink, some occasional shaving to affecting running-titles, signatures, and catch-words, very occasionally touching text, without loss of sense. A rare treatise on divine apparitions based upon the accounts of the revelations that Rosamond Julianna, Countess of Asseburg, had claimed to have witnessed, translated from the German ('High Dutch') of Johann Wilhelm Petersen (1649-1727), Lutheran pastor in Lunenberg who was deposed over his belief of her these claims. The English translator of this work is unknown, whilst the lengthy English 'preface to the reader' is attributed to English physician and founding member of the Philadelphians Francis Lee (1661 - 1719). 1695. [Theology] ~ BEKKER, Balthazar The World Bewitch'd; or, An Examination of the Common Opinions concerning spirits: Their Nature, Power, Administration, and Operations. As also, The Effects Men are able to produce by their Communication. Divided into IV Parts...Translated from a French Copy, approved of and subscribed by the Author's own Hand [London]. Printed for R. Baldwin, 1695. 12mo. [84]. 264pp. With blank A1, and half-title. Contemporary speckled sheep, spine richly gilt. Lightly rubbed, upper board a trifle warped, small chip at head of spine, else a clean copy. Without RFEP, manuscript shelfmarks to FFEP, with the bookplate of 'The Most Honble.William Marquis of Lothian' to both FEP and REP. Translated from the first part (no further was published in English) of Die Betooverde Wereld (Amsterdam, 1691-3), by Dutch Reformed pastor and Cartestian natural philosopher Balthasar Bekker (1634-98). A significant work of Enlightenment rationalism; Die Betooverde Wereld formed a critical examination of supposed supernatural phenomena, debunking belief in the spirit world and possession by the devil, and attacking consequent persecution of witchcraft. In questioning established theological doctrine and prevailing social practice, Bekker's work provoked fierce reaction. He was tried for blasphemy and ejected from ministry, and his work, considered to contain atheistic views, banned in some more orthodox Dutch towns. Die Betooverde Wereld was not without its cheerleaders, however, with Eric Walten vigorously defending the work until his own death whilst in prison for his bla … [Click Below for Full Description]

1695. You are bidding on Historiae Rei Nummariae Veteris Scriptorus, Aliquot Insigniores &c., by Matth Hosti (Matthaus Hostus) (1509-1587), printed Petrum Vander Aa in 1685. 4to, 274, 638 (but actually 538 p.) The first three volumes of what became a larger work in two separately bound volumes, but complete in and of itself. A collection of tracts on numismatics and numerology each with a separate title page, and a portrait of the author, comprising 18 books in total. The three folding plates called for are also present. This is a nice copy bound in original vellum with variation in paper stock and heavy tanning to sections of the text block throughout (see photos) but overall a clean and bright copy, with numerous errors in pagination but textually complete. The collation matches that of the collation of the Le Clert edition of 1682. Petrum Vander was known for printing pirated maps and it is possible this is a pirated edition but all editions of this work are very scarce and expensive. Numerology Mensuration 1695. This 17th century edition of Julius Caesar's Commentaries was first published in 1655 and again in 1677, but this 1695 edition is preferred because of the added sections concerning the Alexandrian and African wars, not present in the two earlier editions. There are copies of the other editions available on the internet, ranging from $950 to $2625, but none of this 1695 edition with the added material. Camden, William
London: F. Collins. for A.Swalle & A. & F. Churchil, 1695. leather_bound. 1116, (18), (26) pages.[*1, A2, a-g2, B-Fff4, Ggg4,*Ggg2, Hhh4, *Hhh2, Iii-Mmm4,Nnn-Nnnn2, a-l2]. Frontispiece, fifty double-paged maps by Robert Morden, nine plates of maps, and a host of engravings in the text -- most notable, that of Stonehenge, Rolle-rich stones of Oxfordshire; and some Roman tablets, altars and inscriptions. "Britannia" is a county-by-county description of Great Britain. It is a work of chorography: a study that relates landscape, geography, antiquarianism and history. Rather than write a history, Camden described in detail the Great Britain of the present, and attempted to delineate how the past could be discerned in the existing landscape. He thus produced the first coherent picture of Roman Britain. His circle of friends and acquaintances included Lord Burghley, Fulke Greville, Philip Sydney, Edmund Spencer, and Ben Jonson, the latter was Camden's student at Westminster, and who dedicated an early edition of "Every Man in His Humor" to him. SKELTON 117, WING C-359. Handwritten bookplate of Thomas Ansell, dated 1762, text and maps largely bright and clean, minor margin worming leaves Ffff-Mmmm, old repair upper corner of leaf Bb, Kent plate inverted, but overall a fresh and unsophisticated copy. Contemporary panelled calf decorated in blind, rebacked with original red leather spine label laid-down. Near fine. Item #18306.

IDEA DE UN PRINCIPE POLITICO, Y CHRISTIANO, REPRESENTADA EN CIEN EMPRESSAS
Vicente Cabrera, Valencia, 1695.

HODGES, William (fl. 1693-1699).
[London:] Printed in the Year 1695. HODGES, William (fl. 1693-1699). Great Britain's Groans, or, an Account of the Oppression, Ruin, and Destruction of the Loyal Seamen of England in the Fatal loss of their Pay, Health, and Lives, and Dreadful Ruin of their Families. Printed in the Year 1695. 4to., (8 x 5 6/8 inches). Errata leaf bound in at end (first page and edges a bit dusty). Modern half tan calf, blue paper boards. A very dramatic account of the plight of Seamen at the close of the 17th-century: "And indeed their miseries to me seem to be not only great miseries, and new miseries, and fatal miseries, but big-bellied miseries; miseries that beget more miseries, breed more miseries, and bring forth more miseries in a plentiful manner" (page 2). Hodges published at least five pamphlets as part of a one-man campaign to improve the methods of paying naval wages and thus ameliorate the miserable conditions suffered by English sailors (cf D. W. Hayton's biography of Sir William Hodges in DNB). ESTC R13450. Catalogued by Kate Hunter [Attributes: Hard Cover]
