Paris: Joannem Bastistam Coignard,, 1695 Perrault, D. D. (Charles). [1628-1703]. DIVAE GENOVESAE TRIUMPHUS. Paris: Joannem Bastistam Coignard, 1695. Small 8vo., 8pp. 32pp. First Edition. French & Latin text. A very good example showing modest use of one of Perrault'a very uncommon religious titles. Period marbled wrappers missing the back wrapper. Contemporary name of E. M. Charles Perrault was a French author who laid foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, & whose best known tales, derived from pre-existing folk tales, include Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), La Belle au bois dormant (Sleeping Beauty), Le Maître chat ou le Chat botté (Puss in Boots), Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre (Cinderella), La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard) & others. In 1686, he decided to write epic poetry and show his genuine devotion to Christianity, & wrote Saint Paulin, évêque de Nôle (St. Paulinus, Bishop of Nola, about Paulinus of Nola). In 1694-5 he wrote: L’Apologie des Femmes, Le Triomphe de sainte Geneviève, L’idylle à Monsieur de la Quintinie. All rather difficult titles to acquire. Boethius, Anicius Manlius Severinus
London: Printed by J.D. for Awnsham and John ChurchillÉ[et al.], 1695 First edition of this translation. Contemporary calf, rebacked, with gilt black morocco spine labels, gilt coat-or-arms on front cover. Octavo. Some browning to portrait, and small chip at fore-margin, last few leaves with uneven brown spotting, one leaf with chip at fore-margin, not affecting text. A good copy. Boethius' De Consolatione Philosophiae, which was written in prison shortly before the author's death in 525 A.D. was long considered the last great classic work of ancient literature. It was one of the most popular literary works of the Middle Ages and was translated into many languages. Preston justifies this fourth English translation on the grounds that two seventeenth-century predecessors were too incomplete and imperfect, and that Geoffrey Chaucer's early translationÑitself an imitation of Alfred the Great's Anglo-Saxon versionÑwas to incomprehensible to late seventeenth-century readers. Preston intended his translation to bring Boethius' treatise on worldly suffering and the goodness of God within the understanding of ordinary people. He therefore compressed and minimized his notes so not to distract from the text. A life of Boethius and translations into English of early comments about him by Greek and Latin authors are prefixed to the text.

JAILLOT, Alexis-Hubert (1632-1712)
Paris, 1695. Copper-engraved by Cordier, period hand-colouring in outline. Beautifully engraved map of North America, here in the rare first state, with California as an island.Although similarly titled to Jaillot's earlier map of 1674, this map is on a slightly smaller scale. Like Jaillot's earlier map, however, it is beautifully engraved and based on the mappings by Sanson. "The attractive title cartouche engraved by C. Simmoneau is adorned with two tropical birds" (Burden). Although Burden cites the first issue as having no date in the top right cartouche enclosing the scale of miles, close inspection reveals the date to have been abraided off. On the present copy, which includes a contemporary manuscript dating of 1695 in the title cartouche, the date "16 - -" appears in the upper right cartouche, with the terminal digits abraided off. Subsequent issues would add a title below Jaillot's name and amend the mapping of the region to reflect changing boundaries and the creation of colonies. The map would be reissued with such changes until the end of the 18th century. The first and early issues, however, are scarce.Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 709; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 101; McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 695.5; Tooley, "California as an Island," 38 in Tooley, The Mapping of America.

Tryon, Thomas
London: Printed for J. Salisbury, at the Rising-Sun in Cornhill and J. Harris, at the Harrow, in the Poultrey, 1695. First edition. 12mo. Title printed within double rule. [8], 102, [10] pp. At foot of title page: Price bound one shilling. Bound in full brown goatskin grained as sheep, boards ruled in blind (preserving the original lower cover), spine titled in gilt, title-page and following leaf have been inlaid at edges, restoration to outer rule at head of title, margins of last leaf repaired, expertly conserved. Wing T3190; OCLC 14560949 . A very scarce little tract by the amazing and entirely self-educated Tryon (1634-1703), the "Pythagorean," vegetarian, mystic and practical philsopher who has often been compared to his admirer Benjamin Franklin, who himself was greatly impressed in his youth by Tryon's WAY TO HEALTH. "- [Franklin] became in his day a 'Tryonist'; nor is it in any degree fanciful to discover a marked likeness between the style of Franklin and the quaint moralising of Tryon, though there is in the latter a vein of mystical piety to which 'Poor Richard,' with all his virtues, is a stranger -" - DAB. Despite some peculiar notions (e.g., eating roots is to be avoided, for "by reason of their Crude and Earthy qualities, they naturally beget wind -"), Tryon's emphasis on diet rings especially modern, and his deep respect for the learning abillities of children underlies his contempt for a system of "schooling" which is based on terror and imprisonment. In his Preface, the author laments the waste of the current system of eduction in which school masters keep … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert (c.1632-1712)
Paris: 1695. Engraved map. 21 1/4 x 28 1/2 inches. An important French mapping of Canada during King William's War and the "first printed information, however tenuous, on the geography of the region to the north and west of Lake Superior" (Kershaw). This important map of Canada by the French cartographer Jaillot, published in the midst of King William's War, focuses on the French possessions, and identifies the Hudson's Bay Company forts taken by the French: Fort Nelson, Moose River, Rupert House, and Albany Fort. Importantly, the map "offers the first printed information, however tenuous, on the geography of the region to the north and west of Lake Superior, relating in fact to present day Lake Winnipeg ... [Jaillot] has used the correct English version for the shape of Hudson Bay, and marks Port Nelson in roughly the correct location. He shows two large but unnamed lakes towards the source of the Nelson River which can be interpreted as Lake Winnipeg, and he gives a creditable version of Lake Nipigon ... The river to the south of Port Nelson is the first indication of the Hayes River system, and the relationship between the Ottawa River and Lakes Nipissing, Timiskaming and Abitibi is clarified for the first time. Similarly, the canoe route via the Saguenay River, Lac St. Jean and Lac Timagaming to James Bay is shown clearly on a printed map for the first time" (Kershaw, p. 158). This is the second state of the map, with the 1685 date altered to 1695 in the scale of miles cartouche. Congreve, William
London: for Jacob Tonson, 1695. 1670-1729 Folio, 11.75 x 7.5 inches. Second edition Congreve's first separately published poem, which went through three editions in 1695. A-C2. The title page is printed within a black frame to indicate mourning. Disbound. William Congreve was a celebrated playwright who started his career as literary apprentice to John Dryden. His plays were highly praised by Dryden; he was visited by Voltaire whose praises he brushed off, saying he would rather be treated as a man without fame. Although best known for his comedies, Congreve also produced a tragedy, novels, and a stock of poetry. This is his funeral ode on the death of Queen Mary, which had engendered a small flood of such verse.

CORONELLI, Vincenzo.
Venice: 1695. Venice:, 1695. Size: 450 x 600 mm. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Good condition with a small hole in the right hand margin. A large and impressive rendering of the island of Madagascar, with numerous place names around the coast. Although the west coast of the island is well defined, the east shows the fictitious concave format of earlier maps. The title is displayed in a classical floral wreath cartouche at the bottom left; at lower right there is a distance table on a draped cloth; the coast line of Mozambique fills the west corner. The lines of latitude are decorated with fleur-de-lis indicating north, and the Tropic of Cancer divides the lower portion of the map. This is one of the finest available maps of the island, produced by arguably Italy's finest cartographer, from his fine Venetian atlas Corso Geografico Universale.

Camden, William
London: F. Collins. for A.Swalle & A. & F. Churchil, 1695. leather_bound. Contemporary panelled calf decorated in blind, rebacked with original red leather spine label laid-down. Near fine.. 1116, (18), (26) pages.[*1, A2, a-g2, B-Fff4, Ggg4,*Ggg2, Hhh4, *Hhh2, Iii-Mmm4,Nnn-Nnnn2, a-l2]. Frontispiece, fifty double-paged maps by Robert Morden, nine plates of maps, and a host of engravings in the text -- most notable, that of Stonehenge, Rolle-rich stones of Oxfordshire; and some Roman tablets, altars and inscriptions. "Britannia" is a county-by-county description of Great Britain. It is a work of chorography: a study that relates landscape, geography, antiquarianism and history. Rather than write a history, Camden described in detail the Great Britain of the present, and attempted to delineate how the past could be discerned in the existing landscape. He thus produced the first coherent picture of Roman Britain. His circle of friends and acquaintances included Lord Burghley, Fulke Greville, Philip Sydney, Edmund Spencer, and Ben Jonson, the latter was Camden's student at Westminster, and who dedicated an early edition of "Every Man in His Humor" to him. SKELTON 117, WING C-359. Handwritten bookplate of Thomas Ansell, dated 1762, text and maps largely bright and clean, minor margin worming leaves Ffff-Mmmm, old repair upper corner of leaf Bb, Kent plate inverted, but overall a fresh and unsophisticated copy.

KEULEN, Joannes van (1654-1715)
Amsterdam: Johannes Van Keulen, 1695. JOHANN VAN KEULEN'S SPECTACULAR SEA CHARTS OF THE GULF COAST AND THE WORLD Copperplate engraving Johannes van Keulen was the founding member of a family of mapmakers that created a veritable cartographic dynasty in 17th-century Amsterdam, becoming the chief publisher of sea atlases and nautical works during the era. This finely engraved and important chart of the Gulf of Mexico was published in van Keulen's monumental sea atlas, the Zee-Fakkel, considered by many to be the culmination of the development of Dutch pilot books. The chart is beautifully engraved with a splendid baroque cartouche that includes cherubs with a falcon, a snake and seafaring utensils. The Zee-Fakkel was published in five parts from 1684 to 1689. Part IV of the atlas was devoted to America, and in its separately published form, was the first sea atlas specifically devoted to the New World. It contained some of the most important 17th-century sea charts of American areas, including this rare chart, a re-issue of the 1684 edition, with significantly more detail added - particularly place names. Oriented with West at the top, as was common in Dutch sea charts of the time, it depicts the entire Gulf coast, and includes the region from present day Pensacola, Florida to Cozumel Island off the Yucatan peninsula. Rhumb lines are depicted throughout. An inset in the lower left shows the area around present day Vera Cruz. The Zee-Fakkel was the largest and most complete sea atlas to be published to date. As with preceding Dutch atlases of the type, it was designed … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOLFF, Jeremias (1663-1724)
Augsburg: Published in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff, 1695. Engraving with superb early colour and rich gold highlights. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches. This is a handsome print, with breathtaking early colour, depicting the costume of a singer at a masque ball. This bold print is from a colourful series of costume prints engraved and published by Jeremias Wolff at the beginning of the 18th century. The series depicts prancing figures in flamboyant theatrical costumes, and is a superb example of early costume prints. Costume and trade prints, such as this, became extremely popular in Europe at the close of the seventeenth century and continued to serve as a source of inspiration until the decadent days of the Art Deco movement in the 1920's. This magnificent series depicts the costumes of ballet dancers, and opera singers, as well as the vibrant apparel of a jester at a masque ball. As is typical of this genre of print, the figures are pictured in front of an architectural or pastoral background and richly coloured in thick opaque colour with vibrant gold highlights. The series was executed and produced by the prolific German publisher Jeremias Wolff. Wolff came from a family of engravers and became extremely successful, both as an engraver and as a publisher and printseller. He was one of the most prolific publishers and engravers in Augsburg and is responsible for some of the finest engravings to come out of the city. In addition to a number of other costume books and portraits, he was a successful map publish … [Click Below for Full Description]
