Ireland - Morden, Robert. (1650 - 1703)
London: Morden (Sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham and John Churchill). Original Map in breathtaking condition. Excellent colouring.. London, Morden (Sold by Abel Swale, Awnsham and John Churchill), 1695. Original hand-coloured engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 35 cm wide x 42.5 cm high. Mounted: c. 52 cm x 59 cm. Original Map in breathtaking condition. Excellent colouring. Robert Morden (c.1650-1703) was an English bookseller, publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His cartographical output was large and varied. His best-known maps are those of South Wales, North Wales and the English Counties first published in a new edition of Camden's "Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is in parts (e.g. Skye and the Western Isles) essentially a copy of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch, published by Joan Blaeu; other parts show evidence of more accurate cartography. He published a new map of the Tamil homeland, Coylot Wanees Country, in 17th century Ceylon island. He is also known for several very rare early maps of the British colonies in North Americ … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ROYAL HOSPITAL FOR SEAMEN AT GREENWICH]
London, printed by Charles Bill, and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd, printers to the Kings most Excellent Majesty. [1695 (colophon)]. folio, 26 + (2)pp., including the final blank G2, printed largely in black letter, with a fine and large cut of the arms of King William III and a superbly ornamental initial letter 'W' at head of first leaf of text (A2), the title page simply lettered 'Commission for Greenwich Hospital', this rather soiled and foxed, some minor marginal soiling and defective corners, fairly recently well bound in morocco-backed marbled boards, spine lettered gilt. A good, large, copy. The Commission or Letter Patent,> dated at the end, 'at Westminster, the tenth day of September, in the seventh year of Our Reign', therefore seems to pre-date the Commission> dated 12th March 1695 (i.e. 1696 according to Lady Day dating). Both are recorded presumably by the undiscerning Wing W2312. [bound with], THE NAMES> of the Lords and other the Commissioners for Greenwich Hospital>. London, printed by Charles Bill, and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, deceas'd, printers to the Kings most Excellent Majesty. 1695 [colophon]. folio, caption title, 6 + (2)pp., including the blank B2, a good large copy. Wing N139 and ESTC locate copies only at Lambeth Palace Lib. and Bodleian (a later printing, Wing N139aA dated 1699, is known by copies located at BL + Harvard). Two related documents of some rarity. The Commission> or Letter Patent, dated 10th September 1695, is not recorded by ESTC nor OCLC and there is no copy in BL. PUFENDORF, Samuel.
Lübeck [probably false], 1695. 8vo. (4),+ 384 pp. Slight spotting, small worm holes in margin. Modern marbled paper binding. VD17 12:108735Q. Two supplements were published, sometimes found together. First edition of this postumously published work by Samuel Pufendorf (1632-94) on the reunification of protestants in Europe. ?Jus feciale divinum? sets forth Pufendorf?s basis for the reunion of the Lutheran and Calvinist confessions. It can be seen as a complement to his view of toleration discussed in ?De habitu religionis christianae ad vitam civilem?, published in 1687. In both these late works Pufendorf examines the best way to secure peaceful co-existence of different confessions in a state. However, reconciliation between Protestants and Catholics is declared to be impossible. A second edition, augmented with an index, was published in 1716. [Attributes: First Edition]

(Versailles) THOMASSIN, Simon.
Thomassin was sent by Colbert to study in Rome for four years before returning to France in 1680 and becoming court engraver to Louis XIV. Among his first projects after his return was to draw and publish illustrations of all the sculpture, ancient and modern, used to decorate the palace and gardens at Versailles. The first edition of this work appeared in Paris in 1694. It was quickly reissued, in the edition offered here, by Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam. This Dutch edition includes the same text and plates, but adds a folding engraved plan of the gardens of Versailles and a translation of the text into Latin, Italian and Dutch. The plates depict not only the statuary, but also the fountains, hermae and vases distributed throughout the gardens. A rare second Paris edition with 26 additional plates was published in the same year as the first, but that edition also appeared without the garden plan. Ganay 37; Berlin Cat 4212. Small 4to (19.1 x 13.8 cm); 59 + (1) + (1) + (1) pp. + engraved title, 228 engraved plates, and a folding plan (49.5 x 32.5 cm). Contemporary full calf, rubbed; minor worming in rear joint and back board, not affecting text, but generally a well preserved copy.

His book, published after his return, caused a great sensation, for it was the first to give the world a description of the vast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by the Spanish authorities. Education.) [FÉNELON (François)]
?Versailles. manuscript in ink on paper in a secretarial hand, with one correction in another hand, minor foxing, outer leaves (self-wrappers) a little soiled, ink splash on upper cover, ff. [20, the last blank], 4to, stitched with a single blue silk ribbon making one entry towards the top and tied around, good. 'The Duc de Beauvilliers, who had been the first to test in his own family the value of [Fénelon's] "Traité de l'education des filles", was in 1689 named governor of the grandchildren of Louis XIV. He hastened to secure Fénelon as tutor to the eldest of these princes, the Duke of Burgundy. It was a most important post, seeing that the formation of the future King of France lay in his hands; but it was not without great difficulties, owing to the violent, haughty character of the pupil. Fénelon brought to his task a whole-hearted zeal and devotion. Everything . was made to serve in the taming of this impetuous spirit . With the same object in view, he wrote his "Fables" and his "Dialogues des Morts", but especially his "Télémaque", in which work, under the guise of pleasant fiction, he taught the young prince lessons of self-control, and all the duties required by his exalted position. The results of this training were wonderful. The historian Saint-Simon, as a rule hostile to Fénelon, says: "De cet abîme sortit un prince, affable, doux, modéré, humain, patient, humble, tout appliqué à ses devoirs" . About 1695 every one who came in contact with the prince was in admiration at the change in him' (Catholic Encyclopedia).
