WEST INDIES GAGE Thomas
1695. GAGE, Thomas. A New Survey of the West-India’s: or, The English American his Travail by Sea and Land: Containg a Journal of Three Thousand and Three Hundred Miles within the Main Land of America With a Grammar, or Some Few Rudiments of the Indian Tongue, Called Poconchi, or Pocoman and Beautified with Maps. London: E. Cotes, 1655. Small, slim folio (7 by 11-1/2 inches), 18th-century full paneled brown calf, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label. $8800.Second and much preferred edition of this noted 17th-century description of the wealth of Mexico and South America— as unprotected and ripe for conquest— with four desirable engraved maps of the region by Mercator, not present in the first edition, handsomely bound in full 18th-century elegantly blind-stamped paneled calf.Gage’s provocative survey of the West Indies caused a major sensation. "His account of the wealth and defenceless condition of the Spanish possessions in South America excited the cupidity of the English, and it is said that Gage himself laid before Cromwell the first regular plan for mastering the Spanish territories in the New World" (DNB). In 1625, in order to thwart the Spanish decree against the presence of foreigners in Spanish territories, Gage smuggled himself aboard ship bound from Spain to the Philippines, in an empty biscuit barrel. He spent the next 12 years traveling through Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama— living among the Indians, whose unprotected riches, "under pretence of their conversion, hath corrupted the hearts of poor begging Fryers with strife, hatred, and ambition. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Cruyl starter drawing and engraving views when he moved to Rome around 1664. His first works were his twenty one drawings, once kept in the Albertina in Vienna and nowadays divided between the Cleveland Museum and Rijksmuseum.

1695. 4 vols. (24), 484, (28) pp. (4), 470, (18) pp. (4), 599, (1), 89 (1) pp. (40), 411, (5) pp. With a total of 2 engr. frontispieces (in vols. 1 and 4). Original French calf with giltstamped spine. Encompassing study of the Ottoman Empire in the late 17th century, at a time when its power in Europe was waning, but it remained a force to be reckoned with. Rare, especially when including the 4th volume ("Suite de l'Etat general de l'Empire otoman [...] Quatrieme tome") which contains accounts of the state of the Greek, Armenian and Maronite churches in the Ottoman Empire. "According to the Gennadius Library, this was translated by Petis de la Croix and edited by La Croix. In fact the privilege is ceded to La Croix, former secretary of the French embassy at Constantinople. It seems likely that there must be a family connection between the two, although the original family of Petis de la Croix was Petis, not La Croix" (Atabey). - Binding slightly rubbed, but on the whole in good condition. The Atabey copy (3 volumes only) commanded £15,000 at Sotheby's in 2002 (lot 646). Atabey 651. OCLC 470426837. Not in Blackmer or Cobham-Jeffrey.

Mercator, Gerard.
1695. Hand-coloured engraved map (485 x 340 mm). Striking old color example of the second edition of Mercator's Ptolemaic map of the Middle East, first issued in the 1695 edition of Mercator's Geographia, based upon the works of Claudius Ptolemy. Mercator's map was a landmark in the mapping of the Arabian Peninsula, being the last published edition of Ptolemy and without question the most heavily researched and studied of all editions by its maker. Ptolemy had originally drawn on the accounts of travelers and sailors and though the information was secondhand and often inaccurate it represented the most advanced account of the world's geography at that time. In the case of Arabia, Ptolemy overestimated both the width of the southern part of Arabia and the size and shape of the Persian Gulf. Arabia Petrea and Arabia Deserta are both placed in the north and Arabia Felix is the term applied to the whole peninsula, rather than to the southern portions of it. Ptolemy's map, as interpreted by European cartographers such as Mercator, was hugely influential and served as a standard for European mapping of the peninsula for many years. Tibbetts 39. Al Ankary 262. McMinn 15. Not in Al-Qasimi.

Content: 1 tilte page and 6 representations of Malacca in Malaysia, city and natives; - vita of the artist: Pieter van der Aa ( 1659 - 1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued. Some of his most popular maps were of the African continent, detailing locations such as Morocco and Madagascar. Many of his later works were printed for the general public in French and Dutch.Pieter van der Aa began his career at Leiden in 1683 as a Latin trade publisher, publishing classical texts pertaining to medicine and science. As he progressed, he began to publish atlases and maps, compiling numerous multi-volume collections of works. His ambition to become Leiden's most famous printer was fulfilled in 1715 with his appointment to head printer for the city and its university. One of Pieter van der Aa's largest compilations relates to the history of Italy and Sicily, an area of immense personal interest. Though he took credit for many of his compilations, several, such as the Dutch collection of travels to the East and West Indies, were admittedly simple improvements to others' works.
