The series depicts prancing figures in flamboyant theatrical costumes, and is a superb example of early costume prints. Costume and trade prints, such as this, became extremely popular in Europe at the close of the seventeenth century and continued to serve as a source of inspiration until the decadent days of the Art Deco movement in the 1920's. This magnificent series depicts the costumes of ballet dancers, and opera singers, as well as the vibrant apparel of a jester at a masque ball. As is typical of this genre of print, the figures are pictured in front of an architectural or pastoral background and richly coloured in thick opaque colour with vibrant gold highlights. The series was executed and produced by the prolific German publisher Jeremias Wolff. Wolff came from a family of engravers and became extremely successful, both as an engraver and as a publisher and printseller. He was one of the most prolific publishers and engravers in Augsburg and is responsible for some of the finest engravings to come out of the city. Augsburg: Published in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff, 1695. Engraving with superb early colour and rich gold highlights. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches. This is a handsome print, with breathtaking early colour, depicting the actor Ange Constantin in costumeAngelo Constantini (d. 1729) was one of the pillars of the commmedia dell'arte in Paris from 1682 until 1697, when Louis XIV closed it down. He was the author of Vie de Scaramouche, 1692, and had a devoted following for his singing and expressive acting. The character he made famous was Mezzetin or Mezzetino, a scheming, clever, flirtatious servant. Constantini later went to Dresden to form an Italian acting troupe under the patronage of Augustus II, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Very unwisely, Constantini became involved with Augustus' mistress and was imprisoned for many years. Finally, he released when he was in his sixties, he returned to Paris for some very successful performances, and later on to Verona, his birthplace, where he died in 1729. A Short Account of the Most Eminent Painters both Ancient and Modern. London: W. Rogers, 1695. Two volumes in one. Thick, square octavo, 19th-century three-quarter tan calf, black and green morocco spine labels, marbled boards, endpapers and edges. $2200.First translation into English prose by Dryden of Du FresnoyÂ’s Latin poem on the practice of art, prefaced by DrydenÂ’s famous Parallel of Poetry and Painting, with engraved allegorical frontispiece by Henry Cooke, issued together with Richard GrahamÂ’s biographical chronology of painters.Du Fresnoy is remembered now almost entirely as a writer rather than a painter. While his few paintings are at best reminiscent of Carraci and Titian, “he was a great master of the rules, history, and theory of his profession” (Chalmers). His Latin poem, De Arte Graphica, written during his 24-year Italian sojourn, is well-regarded as a critical treatise on the practice of the art, with general advice to students. It embodies his observations on the art of painting in sound precepts according to the standards of his time. First published in Latin by his friend Pierre Mignard in 1656, De Arte Graphica was translated into English prose by Dryden, prefaced by his famous Parallel of Poetry and Painting: “Expression and all that belongs to words, is that in a poem which coloring is in a picture. The colors well chosen in their proper places, together with the lights and shadows which belong to them, light … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was active in communal affairs and was a member of the rabbinical court of Joseph Caro, who ordained him. This is the text that Hayyim Alshekh published in Venice in 1605, claiming that it was his father’s authoritative text and not merely a preliminary draft (which had been published a decade earlier in Constantinople under the title Tappuhei Zahav). Alshekh’s Biblical commentaries, which are permeated with religious-ethical and religious-philosophical ideas supported by ample quotations from talmudic and midrashic sources, became quite popular and have often been reprinted. With an introduction by the publisher citing Ephraim Luntschitz on the importance of the work and quoting the author’s intentions in originally presenting this book to the public. Amsterdam, Pierre Mortier, 1695. ROYAL HOSPITAL FOR SEAMEN AT GREENWICH,
folio, 26(2)pp., including the final blank G2, printed largely in black letter, with a fine and large cut of the arms of King William III and a superbly ornamental initial letter 'W' at head of first leaf of text (A2), the title page simply lettered 'Commission for Greenwich Hospital', this rather soiled and foxed, some minor marginal soiling and defective corners, fairly recently well bound in morocco-backed marbled boards, spine lettered gilt. A good, large, copy. The Commission or Letter Patent, dated at the end, "at Westminster, the tenth day of September, in the seventh year of Our Reign", therefore seems to pre-date the Commission dated 12th March 1695 (i.e. 1696 according to Lady Day dating). Both are recorded presumably by the undiscerning Wing W2312. [bound with],THE NAMES of the Lords and other the Commissioners for Greenwich Hospital. [PALAFOX Y MENDOZA, Juan de].
Paris: Christophe Remy, 1695. Small octavo; a very good copy in contemporary calf. Second edition of this rare spiritual romance. First published in Rouen in 1684, this educational novel is written as an allegorical voyage to the imaginary island of "Virtue" on the River Orontes, the chief Syrian river, and the standard route to Egypt since antiquity. The island proves to be a peaceful religious utopia, presented as a model for the reader. Its tenets are suggested by the work's preface, the poem "Epistre à Damon", that is, Damon of Syracuse, who selflessly pledged his life to Dionysus of Syracuse in return for the freedom of his friend. This work has long been attributed to Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659), an important figure in Spanish Catholicism. He spent much of his life as envoy and bishop to Mexico, where his reluctance to convert by any means other than persuasion gained him the title "Protector to the Indians". He returned to Spain after a long-running dispute with the Jesuits, whose privileges he sought to temper. His writings, consisting largely of ascetic, pastoral, and historical treatises, were published in Madrid in the eighteenth century, not long after he narrowly missed out on canonisation. Slightly worn.

MERCATOR, Gerard
Utrecht: Franciscus Halma. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Page measures 18" x 23.5". This striking circa 1695 map issued by Gerard Mercator depicts Italy in its entirety. This Ptolemaic map includes Corsica and parts of Sardinia and Sicily. It notes important towns, cities, islands, rivers, and other topographic features. Cities and mountains are beautifully rendered in profile. First issued by Mercator in his 1578 edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia", the map includes an ornate title cartouche and an interesting sea monster that appears to be a cross between a bird, a fish and a turtle. In good condition with minor wear and verso repair along the original centerfold. Some scuffing near borders in the lower left and right corners. Stain to lower left margin. Claudius Ptolemy (90-168 CE) was a Roman geographer and mathematician living in Egypt, who compiled his knowledge and theories about the world's geography into one seminal work. Although his maps did not survive, his mathematical projections and location coordinates did. During the Renaissance revival of Greek and Roman works, "Geographia" was rediscovered by monks and based upon Ptolemy's detailed instructions, the maps were recreated. The first printed edition of "Geographia" with maps was published in Bologna in 1477. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a char … [Click Below for Full Description]
