London, Awnsham & John Churchil, 1695. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. [xx], 296, [iv] - being the prefact, text and index. A somewhat important work in Arthurian literature, and in speculative fiction in general. Whilst it was written in support of William of Orange, it still serves to help maintain the most famous of English myths. So however tedious the text is (I got through a couple of dozen pages), it is an important work and deserves to have its place retained in the study of the myth. Near fine, early if not contemporary boards - bound in full calf - rebacked somewhat recently with newer endpapers, though still themselves old. Some wear to the spine tips and where the rebacking has been undertaken. A couple of marginal notes. Leaves largely in good shape, tightly bound - a very attractive copy overall. [6477, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. If you'd like this service on cheaper items please utilise the expedited shipping. All photos are of the actual item for sale. Further photos can be provided. Returns accepted; buyer pays for return unless we're at fault. [Hyraxia Books, 6477].

Bussy-Rabutin ?
Cologne (Amsterdam): 1695. Superbe. Anonyme (Bussy-Rabutin ?). A l'arrière-plan on … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIDLEY, H[umphrey].
London: Printed for Sam. Smith and Benj. Walford, 1695. First edition. First edition, and an exceptionally fine copy in untouched contemporary binding, of the first book on neuroanatomy in English. "Humphrey Ridley made some pioneering contributions to our understanding of the central nervous system in humans. This early anatomist not only published the first text on brain anatomy written in English, but was probably also the first to describe the presence of [cerebrospinal] fluid surrounding the brain, the presence of a pineal tumor, and was the first to provide an in depth description of the arachnoid mater" (Veith et al., p. 15). "His contributions to neuroscience have laid the foundation for modern neurosurgery" (Thakur et al., p. 7). "A graduate of Leiden University, Humphrey Ridley worked as a London practitioner. He wrote the earliest separate monograph on neuroanatomy entitled The anatomy of the brain ..., published by Samuel Smith, London, in 1695. This was the first English volume on neuroanatomy and updated the seven cranial nerves of Willis to ten, which were shown in his copperplate engravings of the base of the brain. The basal ganglia and the deep grey matter nuclei of the cerebrum were described by him at length in his English monograph where he gave one of the first descriptions of the restiform body, which he named for the inferior peduncle of Willis, as well as descriptions of the venous sinuses (which he injected) and the venous drainage of the corpus striatum ... John Locke
London: A. and J. Churchil, 1695. Further considerations concerning raising the value of money. Wherein Mr. Lowndes's arguments for it in his late Report concerning an essay for the amendment of the silver coins, are particularly examined. Locke, John. London : Printed for A. and J. Churchil, 1695. 2nd Edition. --o0o-- The Great Recoinage controversy of the 1690s was the impetus for Locke s writings on mercantile and monetary theory. In the 1660s Sir Josiah Child had argued that the legal rate of interest should be lowered. It was still a topic for political discussion in the early 1690s: Child was still pressing the argument, and was supported by London merchants. Locke however defended a legal rate of interest but refused to fix it below the current rates. This was the occasion for his publishing Some Considerations of the Consequences of the Lowering of Interest and Raising the Value of Money in 1692. When William Lowndes, Secretary of the Treasury, proposed in 1695 to raise the nominal value of coins, Locke slightly revised Some Considerations and also published two further pamphlets, Short Considerations, and Further Considerations (the later of which is found here). At that time gold and silver coins had a value equivalent to their metal content, representing nothing but their silver or gold quantity. Locke rejected devaluation, basing his argument on this commodity theory of money. He considered raising of the denomination or the increase of alloy to be debasement and fraud" (Yolton). 1695.

Houghton proposes methods of financing the Nine Years' War, of which his first is most notable: that everyone condemned to death in England be offered a reprieve of their sentence for all crimes save murder, in return for them paying the exchequer full compensation for their crimes, be levied an additional fine, and pay £50 a year thereafter. If they are not able to pay, Houghton proposes they be branded and used as slaves in the government trading companies. Houghton gives lengthy lists of his proposals for the appropriate fine for each crime, graded by rank in society. His proposals would at least have replaced the prevalent death penalty in the English legal system with a more financially remunerative punishment, and his critiques of the death penalty as ineffectual from both an economic point of view but also as failing to deter crime and reform criminals is notable. As he writes, "whereas hanging them is a great loss to the nation. the preservation of their lives this way, will not only raise ready money for the service of the government; but the sending them abroad will, in a few years, increase the power and strength of the English in foreign parts. the owners abroad enriched, themselves preserved, and the nation rid of rogues, which, in time, and change of place, may grow honest; so that it may be better. than to continue hanging them, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stahl, Georg Ernst Reich, Johann Jacob
Halae : Typis Christophori Salfeldi, 1695, Kl.4, 16, (6) pp., marmor. Broschur der Zeit eines Expl. Sehr Selten - Erste Ausgabe! [Click Below for Full Description]

John Locke
London: A. Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Cruyl starter drawing and engraving views when he moved to Rome around 1664. His first works were his twenty one drawings, once kept in the Albertina in Vienna and nowadays divided between the Cleveland Museum and Rijksmuseum. Bel exemplaire très bien relié. Anonyme. Milton drafted the first four books of the History of Britain in the six weeks between the execution of King Charles I on 30 January 1649 and his own appointment as Latin secretary on 13 March, and the final two books in the mid-1650s. Written with the full strength of Milton's politics and beliefs, the History displays a strong anti-clericalism and a puritanical Protestantism. Milton treats his mediaeval sources with contempt both for their style and their monkish assumptions. It is an ideological history, yet it is also "a journey away from grand narratives. Milton abandons the myth of England as a chosen and privileged nation. He abandons the legacy of sixteenth-century Protestant historiography, the legacy of John Foxe and John Bale, with its pati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Crescenzo ONOFRI (Roma 1632 - dopo 1712)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Copper engraving one of the most sought after due to its magnificent large decorative borders. Map of the island top right, enriched by a perspective view of the town of Chalkis (Negroponte) bottom left, with a dominant Lion in the very left corner. From "Corso geografico", one among the most important works by Coronelli, who published, between end of the XVII and beginning of XVIII century, many famous books, like "Libro dei globi", and "Atlante Veneto". Vincenzo CORONELLI (Venezia 1650 - 1718)
Esemplare in buone condizioni." "Decorative and highly detailed map of Corfu, with 9 inset views of Castles and Cities on the island, along with a decorative cartouche and two large coats of arms. Coronelli's map of Corfu is one of the most decorative and sought after of all maps of Corfu. The present example is an unusally strong dark impression, with wide clean margins. Example taken form the Coronelli's ""Isolario"" showing at the back the descriptive text and the views of the town ""Veduta della Fortezza Vecchia di Corfu verso Ostro"" and ""Fortezza Vecchia di Corfu"". Coronelli was possibly the best Italian mapmaker of his time. He made globes, including one 5 meters in diameter for Louis XIV. From Coronelli's rare Atlante Veneto, one of the most decorative and ornate of all 17th Century Atlases. The map exhibits the fine engraving style of this coveted Venetian Atlas. Copperplate, good condition."

Jean Baptiste NOLIN (circa 1657 - 1708)
Uncommon map of Ireland. A visually stunning map with a large title cartouche. This large one-sheet map was produced by the Venetian cosmographer Vincenzo Coronelli when he was working in Paris in the 1680's. Tillemon, who corrected and amended the map was, Coronelli's collaborator in Paris and J.B.Nolin was their publisher.
