John Richardson
[n.p.], February 10, [n.y.]. 6.5 X 7.75 in.. "A very fine content Autograph Letter Signed by a colleague ""N. Spinckes"", two pages, 6.5 x 7.75 in., [no place], February 10, [no year, circa 1695-9] concerning the problems getting Richardson's seminal work, ""Vindication of the Canon of the New Testament against Toland "" published. Spinckes, apparently Richardson's editor and advocate, opens explaining that ""I hoped by this time to have given ou an account [that] yo[u]r excellent Book was in ye Presse. But ye Booksellers with whom I was treating about it, are unwilling (having no knowledge of you)_ to undertake it, so have returned me it. Whereupon my Lord BS of Ely has put into Mr Sare's hand who has promised to do it, & only stays till I have adjusted y[our] references I mentioned to You, which I find are most difficult that I hoped they might have been..."" Indeed this was what occurred in the end. The first edition of his work was published by Richard Sayre and printed by W. Boyer in London. The work was a conservative attack on the work of the work of the early Deist, John Tolland (1670-1722). Though the work apparently only received scant praise from his Richardson's contemporaries and allies, the work went into two more editions in 1701 and 1719 with Sare backing the printing of both editions. Richard Sare (d. 1724) was the publisher of numerous conservative Christian works including A defence [sic] of the short view of the profanes and immorality of the English Stage..., The truth and excellence of the Christian religion asserted: against Jews, infidels and heretic … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSA SALVATOR.
presso Severo Prothomastix, 1695. Cm. 15, pp. 140. Fregio xilografico al frontespizio. Legatura coeva in cart.

[Click Below for Full Description]
