Recent black cloth, lettered in gilt. Very minor wear to extremities. Tottenham 1832 / London', lightly browned and foxed. A reissue of the 1689 edition of Roman forgeries in the councils during the first four centuries by dean of Durham, Thomas Comber (1645-1699), in which the liturgist reveals apparent deception and fraud within the early Roman Catholic Church - with particular attention devoted to the Annales Ecclesiastici of cardinal Cesare Baronius (1596-1607). Edward Tottenham (1810-1853), Irish clergyman, graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, who served successively as minister for Kensington Chapel, Bath, Curate of Laura Chapel, Bath, and, from 1841, as a Prebendary of Wells. Tottenham devoted himself to the scholarly study of the Roman Catholic Church and liturgy, which he perceived to be corrupted; his book collection, purchased by the Bath Reference Library upon his death, well reflected this sentiment. MORDEN, Robert & BROWNE, Christopher
London, 1695. London,, 1695. viz Virginia, Maryland, Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jarsey, New England, Newfoundland, New France &c c1695. Double-page engraved map (490 by 630mm to the neatline, full margins showing the plate mark). A rare, separately-published, early map of eastern North America west to the Mississippi River. One of the earliest obtainable English maps to focus on the entirety of English North America. This is the original state of a map made famous by John Senex in 1719. A nod to English imperial intentions, this map of the eastern part of North America notes coastal development while suggesting available lands in the undeveloped interior of the continent. It features a prominent, albeit fictitious, mountain range extending from Michigan into Florida and connecting with the Appalachians. The error remained on maps into the nineteenth century. The English colonies are shown drawn on recent cartography such as the Hermann map of Virginia and Reed map of William Reed's manuscript map of New England, and the recent grants of Pennsylvania and West New Jersey. The map includes an influential (though not completely positive) treatment of the Great Lakes, the aforementioned false transcontinental mountain range, a depiction of the Mississippi River, and many details of the English colonies. Morden's map was an early example of English cartographers contesting French claims to the North American interior: in addition to the American Midwest, Morden depicts much of New France as under English dominion. Nevertheless, the English colonies along the Atlant … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anacreon
Apud Gualt. Kettilby, Londini [London], 1695. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [xii], 131, [1]. Eighteenth-century red morocco, boards bordered with a wide border made up of several gilt rolls, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. A little spotting to edges, fore-edge of first few leaves slightly rubbed. Joints and edges rubbed, a few marks. Pencilled ownership inscription of Sandison dated 1948 to initial blank. An elaborately-bound copy of the first edition of these selections from the Anacreontea made by William Baxter (1650-1723), schoolmaster at Stoke Newington. He followed it with a second edition in 1710, the same year he became master of the Mercers' School, in the meantime quarrelling with Joshua Barnes over his edition of Anacreon (1705). Academically pugnacious, Baxter also disagreed with Bentley over his Horace, an author whom Baxter had edited in 1701. ESTC R16091. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Caesar, Gaius Julius: (Edmonds, Clement, ed.:)
Folio, pp.[xliv], 309, [i] + 15 plates in total, including frontispiece and 9 folding plates. Title-page in red and black. A little very light dampstaining just visible at tail edge of first 10 leaves approx., a few very light paper repairs to edges of first 4 leaves, frontis slightly toned with some light transfer to title. Contemporary brown speckled calf, raised bands to spine, edges sprinkled red. Neatly rebacked with spine label, corners repaired. Rubbed, scuffed, edges worn and a little chipped. Still a very good copy overall.'The conduct of war was prominent among Edmondes's (1567/8?-1622) interests. He urged the necessity for soldiers to read about and discuss the practice of their profession, to supplement their practical experience. He was encouraged by Sir John Scott to undertake an explanatory study of Caesar's Commentaries, published in 1600 as Observations, upon the Five First Bookes of Caesar's Commentaries and followed in the same year by Observations on the Sixth and Seventh Books. Edmondes explained that the work was directed at English soldiers and he supplemented his comments on Roman military practice with observations on contemporary campaigns, including those of the English forces in France and the war in Ireland, as well as the battle of Dreux of 1562 between the royal army and protestant forces in France. He also discussed the question of how to deal with an invasion of England, whether to oppose an invading army at the coast or to withdraw and offer battle later. His preference was to fortify the coast of Kent and oppose a landing. As well as milit … [Click Below for Full Description]
