        New Survey of the West-Indias

1695 - GAGE, Thomas. A New Survey of the West-India's: or, The English American his Travail by Sea and Land: Containg a Journal of Three Thousand and Three Hundred Miles within the Main Land of America". With a Grammar, or Some Few Rudiments of the Indian Tongue, Called Poconchi, or Pocoman". and Beautified with Maps. London: E. Cotes, 1655. Small, slim folio (7 by 11-1/2 inches), 18th-century full paneled brown calf, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine label. $8800.Second and much preferred edition of this noted 17th-century description of the wealth of Mexico and South America"" as unprotected and ripe for conquest"" with four desirable engraved maps of the region by Mercator, not present in the first edition, handsomely bound in full 18th-century elegantly blind-stamped paneled calf.Gage's provocative survey of the West Indies caused a major sensation. "His account of the wealth and defenceless condition of the Spanish possessions in South America excited the cupidity of the English, and it is said that Gage himself laid before Cromwell the first regular plan for mastering the Spanish territories in the New World" (DNB). In 1625, in order to thwart the Spanish decree against the presence of foreigners in Spanish territories, Gage smuggled himself aboard ship bound from Spain to the Philippines, in an empty biscuit barrel. He spent the next 12 years traveling through Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama"" living among the Indians, whose unprotected riches, "under pretence of their conversion, hath corrupted the hearts of poor begging Fryers with strife, hatred, and ambition." Although at one time Gage belonged to the Dominican Order and later the Church of England, he apparently believed strongly in witchcraft and sorcery, as he recounts many instances of their application"" one of which was the poisoning of the the Bishop of Chiapa with a tainted cup of chocolate, for forbidding the drinking of chocolate in the church. First published in London in 1648, Gage's account of New Spain raised greedy eyebrows, "for it was the first to give the world a description of the vast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by Spanish authorities". Its purpose was to urge the English to seize the Spanish territories in the New World" (Hill). The four engraved maps were pulled from plates available to Cotes from his firm's 1635 printing of Gerard Mercator's Historia Mundi (Atlas Minor), and delineate the Western Hemisphere ("Americae Descrip"), Northern South America ("Terra Firma et Novum-Regnum"), Mexico ("Hispania Nova"), and the Caribbean ("Ylandes of the West Indies"). Wing G113. Cox II:237. Sabin 26299. See Hill 665. Early ink notations on verso of frontispiece. Early ink underlining and marginal notations.Corner of last leaf (Table of Contents) torn with slight text loss, only minor embrowning to interior, marginal reinforcement to verso of frontispiece map, front joint expertly repaired, binding quite lovely. A handsome copy in near-fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

CAMDEN’S BRITANNIA, Newly Translated into English; With Large Additions and Improvements.

Oxford: Edmund Gibson, 1695. First edition of Edmund Gibson’s translation and the first to include Morden’s maps, considered among the of the period. With 50 double-page engraved maps, including two fold-out, most by Robert Morden. 9 plates of coins or other antiquities, and numerous woodcut or copper engraved illustrations throughout, several of which are quite large including one nearly half page engraving of Stonehenge and with a frontispiece portrait of Camden. Folio, finely bound in full calf in contemporary style with blind paneled boards, the spine in correct period style with raised bands ruled in blind creating panels with a large central gilt tool, red morocco label boldly lettered in gilt and with gilt edge decoration. cxcvi, 1116, [44] pp. A very handsome and beautifully preserved copy of this scarce work, the text-block and maps and engravings in quite excellent condition, the leaves crisp and clean, occasional mild evidence of age, the binding in excellent, very fine condition. Scarce first edition with Morden’s maps and the first of Gibson’s English translation of this masterpiece on both typography and the Roman and prehistoric remains of Great Britain. The work is a county by county break study in detail. The fantastic engraved maps by Morden are considered among the best of the period. In 1577, with the encouragement of Abraham Ortelius, Camden began his great work Britannia, a topographical and historical survey of all of Great Britain. His stated intention was "to restore antiquity to Britaine, and Britaine to its antiquity." The first edition was published in 1586. The work, which was written in Latin, was very popular. Britannia is a county-by-county description of Great Britain. It is a work of chorography: a study that relates landscape, geography, antiquarianism, and history. Rather than write a history, Camden wanted to describe in detail the Great Britain of the present, and to show how the traces of the past could be discerned in the existing landscape. By this method, he produced the first coherent picture of Roman Britain. While the work itself is a masterpiece, the show-stealer of this edition is unquestionably the fine engraved maps by Robert Morden. Morden died in 1703, and this is the only edition of his most famous maps that were published in his lifetime. These maps are the first county maps to show roads ( based on Ogilby’s road maps ) and show three scales representing great, middle and small miles as different scales were used in different parts of the country. The extremely rare John Bill maps of the 1620’s were the first to carry latitude and longitude which Morden shows here too. Along with the county by county maps of England there are also maps of Scotland, Ireland and the smaller British Islands. Included also is a “Life of Camden”, Camden’s preface and other material.

Prospectus Castri e Ponti S. Angeli

Cruyl starter drawing and engraving views when he moved to Rome around 1664. His first works were his twenty one drawings, once kept in the Albertina in Vienna and nowadays divided between the Cleveland Museum and Rijksmuseum. The drawings actually are the counterpart of the subjects they depict for they were meant to be used for the realization of engravings. Only ten of these subjects have actually been engraved by Cruyl and published for the first time in 1666 by Giovan Battista de Rossi in a volume dedicated to Pope Alexander VII, entitled Prospectus loco rum Urbis Romae Insignis; the collection was afterwards reissued by Matteo Gregorio de Rossi between 1692 and 1698. Cruyl characterized every single view by adding some figures which perfectly adhered to the urban context and, at the same time, he describes and defines the monuments of the city of Pope Alexander. To realized his aim, the artist changed the real perspective and modified the urban space. Etchings, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark or with thin margins, in excellent condition. Examples of the Carlo Losi edition. Very rare. Bibliografia: B. Jatta, Lievin Cruyl e la sua opera grafica, pp.53/9. 515 385

Tab. VI. Asiae, Arabiam Felicem, Carmaniam ac Sinum Persicum comprehendens. Amsterdam, 1695.

1695. Hand-coloured engraved map (485 x 340 mm). Striking old color example of the second edition of Mercator's Ptolemaic map of the Middle East, first issued in the 1695 edition of Mercator's Geographia, based upon the works of Claudius Ptolemy. Mercator's map was a landmark in the mapping of the Arabian Peninsula, being the last published edition of Ptolemy and without question the most heavily researched and studied of all editions by its maker. Ptolemy had originally drawn on the accounts of travelers and sailors and though the information was secondhand and often inaccurate it represented the most advanced account of the world's geography at that time. In the case of Arabia, Ptolemy overestimated both the width of the southern part of Arabia and the size and shape of the Persian Gulf. Arabia Petrea and Arabia Deserta are both placed in the north and Arabia Felix is the term applied to the whole peninsula, rather than to the southern portions of it. Ptolemy's map, as interpreted by European cartographers such as Mercator, was hugely influential and served as a standard for European mapping of the peninsula for many years. Tibbetts 39.

Present State of the Empire of Morocco; With a faithful account of the manners, religion, and government of that people

London: R. Bently, 1695 [xxiv]+216+[12] pages with frontispiece, folding map and eight engraved costume plates. Duodecimo (6 ¼" x 3 ½") early full calf, later spine label. First Edition in English. First published in French the prior year which was published without the plates.François Pidou de Saint Olon was a French diplomat under Louis XIV. In 1682, he was nominated as the first French resident envoy to the Republic of Genoa, following the Bombardment of Genoa. He was then sent as an envoy to Madrid. In 1689 , François Pidou was appointed ambassador to the court of Sultan Moulay Ismail, for the signing of a commercial treaty and to release prisoners, now slaves, of Barbary corsairs of Salé for 233 including 29 bedridden Moroccan prisoners held by the French. His mission was not successful, however, he continued to stay more than three weeks more in Morocco. The book gains particular interest through its author's position as ambassador, giving him access (not always voluntary), to areas of Moroccan society previously unrecorded by travelers. There are detailed descriptions of Moroccan dress, and the book is beautifully illustrated with eight engraved plates of Moroccan men and women in traditional costume.Condition:With the fine copper engraved frontispiece of the overall state of Morocco which is quite rare and is often found missing in most copies. Joints cracking, spine chipped at edges; foxing else very good.
