Map shows the region of the Atlantic Ocean around the Azores and Cape Verde Islands. This exceptional series of globe gores was originally engraved for a 110 cm. diameter terrestrial globe in 1688 - as here. They were subsequently reissued in individual sheet format in Coronelli's "Libro dei globi" and in his World Atlas Isolario in the 1690s. "Coronelli seems to have sought to omit nothing that might be of interest to geographers, navigators and explorers. There are an unusual number of legends, all explanatory and informative, but which never crowd the space available. Many of the vignettes of ships and fishing scenes throughout the world are worthy of separate reproduction. Coronelli makes comments on all the most important explorations and discoveries and undoubtedly had access to the findings of the French Academy of Sciences" [Shirley]. REFERENCE: R. WIT, Frederick de
Amsterdam,: Frederick de Wit inde Kalverstraet inde Witte Paskaert, 1688. Amsterdam,: Frederick de Wit inde Kalverstraet inde Witte Paskaert,, 1688. [c1688]. Double-page engraved map (455 by 545mm to the neatline, full margins), with contemporary hand-colour in full (light oxidation strengthened with Japanese tissue on verso, old vertical fold). A fine and attractive map of Crete with rich contemporary hand-colouring. The island of Crete is set within the calm Mediterranean Sea, which teems with galleons, their tenders and local fishing boats. All are surrounded by six detailed insets of the fortified cities of Canea, Candia, Retimo, and Thine, and the islands of Spina Longa and Suda. The map is based on the earlier work of French military engineer Sébastien de Pontault Beaulieu, 'Plan de L'Isle de Candie Iadis Crete', 1674. When Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) moved to Amsterdam in 1648 he was already a well-established cartographic artist, engraving a plan of Haarlem around 1648 and providing city views for Antonius Sanderus's 'Flandria Illustrata'. He was apprenticed to Willem Blaeu, but by 1654 he had his own business, issuing his own map of the world, 'Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula', as both a wall map and a folio mapsheet in 1660. Two years later, he began to print atlases, the earliest of which were small compilations of prints from the stock of contemporaries. His later work included larger atlases of his own work. By the 1770s, de Wit was making atlases with over 150 maps. Zacharakis 2392.

Louis Aubrey duMaurier
Good Condition: Hole starting at front board to end of introductory letter: writing inside front and on spare along with notations on title page in ink: some foxing. Louis Aubery duMaurier was an historian and writer who was the son of an Ambassador to the Netherlands and wrote his observations in several works. The "Memoires" are his best known work and contain stories/Analysis of the policies of William of Orange, Louise de Colligny, and Others. Written in French, there are translations available but sections are lost, depending on the translators and their point of view. The book itself is in very good condition, considering it is over 300 years old. There is what looks like a wormhole from the front board to the end of the "epistre" or letter from the author, about 5 pages. The paper is thin and discolored from age, the vellum cover is darkened from age and handling, there are various pencil marks inside the board, and writing in pen on the title page and facing which looks like library markings. Nice decorations on title page and some chapter beginnings or endings. Some light foxing but not too much. Fascinating read for the student of the complicated relationships between France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and their contributions to the current world. Very Good Condition: 12mo, vellum cover, binding tight, block solid. Woodcut decorations on title page, ends of some chapters and beginning of others. "Plattegrond Maastricht - ""Traiectum ad Mosam vulgo Maestricht""? Kopergravure uitgegeven door Frederick de Wit in 1688. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.

*** [English translation available upon request. Contact us for any information!]. SACCHI, Bartolomea [Platina]
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Bartolomeo Sacchi, or Platina, was a 15th-century Italian humanist who is most remembered for his book 'Vitae Pontificum,' or 'Lives of the Popes.' 'Lives' was an important work dedicated to the papacy of important Catholic popes, but Platina wrote the work through the lens of Roman history with obvious themes of paganism. This book was the first systematic handbook on papal history and praises the punishment of heresy throughout the Catholic Church. This 1688 second edition was edited and translated by Sir Paul Rycaut. [Attributes: First Edition]

Coronelli, Vincenzo Maria
published in Venice., 1688. 46.7 x 29.5 cm, copper engraving. One of the EXTREMELY RARE GLOBE GORES depicting different parts of the world. Map shows region stretching from Western Africa till the Iberian Peninsula. 1688 Summa Theologica Saint Thomas AQUINAS Medieval Philosophy Catholic 10v SET “The truth can be perceived only through thinking” Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica A rare 16th-century printing of the famous “Summa Theologica” by Thomas Aquinas. This work is considered Aquinas’ "most perfect work, the fruit of his mature years, in which the thought of his whole life is condensed". (Perrier, 149). ‘Summa’ makes references to many great thinkers and philosophers who were important during Aquinas’s time - these include Paul the Apostle, Aristotle, Peter Lombard, Cicero, and Saint Augustine. ‘Summa’ makes many strong arguments about theology and lawful living including: • Theology is the source of divine knowledge and transcends human reason • The existence of God, God is not a metaphor • Unbelief is the worst of all sins; original sin is unavoidable • Collecting interest on loans is unlawful • Just price theory – selling something for more/less of its value is unlawful • Being a monk is greater than being married • Martyrs, teachers, and virgins receive special crowns in heaven This incredibly rare 17th-century, ten-volume set was edited and collected by Gregorio Donato Item number: #4202 Price: $1500 AQUINAS, Thomas Summa totius theologiae S. MARCA, Petro
Paris, apud Franciscum Muguet, 1688. [Click Below for Full Description]
