MILTON, John.
London: By Miles Flesher, for Richard Bently, and Jacob Tonson, 1688. London: By Miles Flesher, for Richard Bently, and Jacob Tonson,, 1688. A Poem In Twelve Books. The Fourth Edition, Adorn'd with Sculptures. Folio (313 x 190 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked to style preserving the original red morocco label, board-edges gilt-rolled. Engraved portrait frontispiece by R. White after William Faithorne, 12 engraved plates, some signed by M. Burghers and Peter Paul Bouche, three leaves of subscribers' names at the rear. Some minor rubbing and light scratches to boards, frontispiece and title faintly darkened, ink splash to M3 and M4, closed tear from bottom of M3 not affecting text, occasional other light marks or mild dust soiling, but an attractive copy with the fair margins and a good impression to the plates, very good. First folio and first illustrated edition of Milton's epic. In contrast to the plain dress first edition in small quarto of 1667 and the two octavo editions of 1674 and 1678, this folio edition (the fourth overall) announces the acceptance of Milton as a great national poet. The frontispiece has commendatory verses by John Dryden, the poetic apologist for the Restoration and monarchy; each book is preceded by a fine engraved plate by John Baptist de Medina and others; and the list of subscribers is over 500 names long. Because of the role played in its publication by the statesman and benefactor John, Lord Somers, this is sometimes called "the Somers edition".

IBN SHADDAD, ‘Izz al-Din.
Aleppo or Constantinolpe ?, 1688. 8vo. 196 leaves, plus 4 endpapers, Arabic text, produced for patron in France, complete, single column, 13 lines in black naskh, headings and important phrases in red, exceptionally clean copy, nineteenth-century ink inscriptions to endpapers in English; contemporary morocco over pasteboards, stamped and ruled in blind with decorative medallions to centre of covers, but without flap, early inscription "No 4" in black ink to upper cover, edges worn with loss to leather, revealing Arabic manuscript leaves compacted to reuse as pasteboards, decorated manuscript on paper. The binding here is distinctively Near Eastern, and the boards are composed from seventeenth-century Arabic manuscript leaves. However, a 20 mm. long section of the original leather of the outermost edge of the back board shows that this binding cannot have ever had a flap. This probably represents an attempt by an Arabic bookbinder to bind in the style of Western books, as part of this highly individual commission for a Western Arabist; [probably Aleppo or perhaps Constantinople, dated Rabi al-thani 1079 AH (September 1688 AD)]. ?Izz al-Din Abu ?Abdallah Mu?ammad b. ?Ali b. Ibrahim Ibn Shaddad al-An?ari al-?alabi (1217-1285) was a Syrian author of topographical and historical works. A famous secretary of the chancellery and skilful administrator, he was employed by the ruler of Aleppo, al-Malik al-Nasir, who sent him in 1242-43 on a mission to inspect finances in Haran. Later, in 1259 when the Mongols were approaching, he was instructed to accompany the ruler’s family from Da … [Click Below for Full Description]

An early English language edition of the map of Japan from Taverniers Travels. Tavernier at the behest of his patron Louis XIV published Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier in 1676. Then a supplementary Recueil de Plusieurs Relations 1679 in which he was assisted by a certain La Chapelle. The Sea of Korea Coreer and the countrys tip can be seen below the inset. On stylistic grounds the map has been attributed to the engraver Herman Moll making it one of his earliest works. Of Halifax's authorship, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us, "Halifax had anonymously distributed three manuscript copies of The Character of a Trimmer, one to the archbishop of Canterbury with a letter asking him to deliver it to the king. It circulated in manuscript until pirated for publication in 1688. In it he alluded to policies that he had opposed in council; the genre of a character and arguments balanced on the notion of the golden mean enabled him to do so without betraying his authorship, which he disclosed after 1688." Soccer; Football]; Bardi Giovanni Maria De', Et Al (Bini, Pietro de Lorenzo, Editor)
Firenze Stamperia di S.A.S., alia Condotta 1688. Rare First Edition of this very early work on football. Engraved armorial title-vignette featuring a figure with a football by Francesco Nacci, two folding engraved plates, one with players lined up for play in the Piazza Sante Croce by Alexander Cecchini and one a diagram of player's positions. 4to, in nineteenth-century marbled boards backed in black morocco, the spine gilt lettered and with multi-line gilt ruled flat bands, additional gilt tooling at the foot, bookplate of Franco Niccoli to front paste-down. [xii], 118, [2 manuscript entries] pp. A very handsome and proper copy of this rare book, with a couple of contemporary marginal annotations and one contemporary manuscript leaf bound at the end, a little scattered foxing throughout but not obtrusive. RARE FIRST EDITION OF PIETRO BINI'S ANTHOLOGY ON FLORENTINE FOOTBALL, a forerunner to the modern games of soccer, rugby and American football. THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST TREATISES ON THAT PREDECESSOR TO OUR MODERN GAMES. In the game of calcio two teams each consisting usually of 27 men are engaged on an enclosed ground of 172 x 82 braccie fiorentine (just little smaller than a modern football field). The action consists of carrying and kicking a pumped ball of medium size with fists and feet (hence the name calcio) in order to make it pass beyond the terminal barriers of the adversaries' half. One such successful action is called caccia. The team making the most caccie is the winner. Games typically last one hour and are played 'for honour's sake'. The wonderfully detail … [Click Below for Full Description]

His other important work is the Kashkool, which includes stories, news, scientific topics, Persian and Arabic proverbs. He also wrote Khula?at al-?isab (lit. "Essentials of arithmetic"), an Arabic textbook that became popular throughout the Islamic lands from Egypt to India until the 19th century. It was translated into German in Berlin by G. H. F. John Milton
1688. Poor binding, otherwise generally good, but please see full description. For sale is this copy of Milton's Paradise Lost. This is the rare fourth edition of 1688, one of the early examples of subscription publishing and the first illustrated edition of this great poem. 'Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacon Tonson, at the Judge's Head in Chancery Lane near Fleet Street'. Large folio, 38cm x 24cm. Plate 9 missing, otherwise complete, including the portrait of Milton, and the list of subscribers at the rear. The binding is present but both boards are off; the front free endpaper is loose; but the remaining pages are holding together firmly. In need of sensitive and skilled repair and restoration. The main faults are: The portrait of Milton is chipped and carries an old repair; the title page is somewhat grubby, with one or two closed tears, and some slight damp staining. There is some slight scattered foxing here and there throughout the book; some pencilled marginal notes; a latin inscription in ink on the title; and a couple of small worm holes. Otherwise good, some finger marks and obvious signs of use, but generally bright and clean, considering its age. The book appears to have some provenance: the title pages carries the names of some previous owners. And next to the name of Viscountess Brouncker on the list of subscribers, appears a pencil note "who gave this book'. I am aware of the book's rarity and value and will consider reasonable offers. Please ask any questions you might have. I will send carefully packed, tracked and insured, and post free within the UK. Pl … [Click Below for Full Description]
