Contemporary spotted calf, covers panelled in blind, rebacked, red morocco label with gilt lettering to spine; extremities slightly worn. Manuscript on the verso of the index. London : Robert Morden & Thomas Cockerill, Robert Morden (d. 1703) was one of the most innovative of the English mapmakers and publishers in the third quarter of the seventeenth century although, as with many of his colleagues and rivals, he struggled to survive, writing in the dedication to this volume, that ?Having made many considerable Improvements and Additions to my Geography in this Second Edition, I have all the reason in the world to shelter it once more under the Patronage of your Name, whose affairs abroad have not only given you a better knowledg and experience of foreign parts; but whose encouragement and bounty, next to Divine Goodness, have only contributed to Production, which otherwise with its poor Author, must have for ever lain latent under the Horizon of unknowing Obscurity, and irresistible Poverty.? It is clear from the excuses that Morden made for this second edition, that the First Edition was not well received, and this motivated him to make considerable improvements; many of the existing plates … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stewart, James, Sir, 1635-1713
by John Reid, 1688. First Edinburgh Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. 39 pp. Signatures: A-E4, COMPLETE. Edges untrimmed (somewhat browned). Unobtrusive blindstamp on first and last leaves. Bound in recent quarter calf antique (Trevor Lloyd). Very good. ¶ THE REPEAL OF THE PENAL LAWS AND TEST ACTS DURING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION. Whereas William of Orange supported repealing the Penal Laws, but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts, his predecessor James sought to repeal the Penal Laws AND the Test Acts, thereby allowing Catholics the right to hold public office. This is the rare first Edinburgh edition; ESTC lists only BL and NLS in the United Kingdom, and Huntington and Univ. of Illinois in the United States. ¶ James Stewart (1635-1713) was one of the leading Scottish radicals in the revolutionary movement. He was offered a pardon by James II, in return for which he sought to persuade his colleagues to return from exile in Holland. In the present pamphlet Stewart replies to a letter written by Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) describing William's position on the repeal of the Penal Laws, the repeal of the Test Acts, and of religious toleration ("Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, pensioner of Holland, to Mr. James Stewart, advocate"). ¶ "Fagel's letter provoked numerous replies and defences, and clearly established the international framework for the debate on toleration. The radical exiles in Holland, who were divided among themselves on the issue of support for, or opposition to, James' toleration policy, were placed directly in the midst of a propaganda and power struggle between James II an … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOGHE, ROMEIJN DE
WILLEM III VERTREKT NAAR ENGELAND VOOR DE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION ?Vertrek van S.K.H. na Engeland; den 11. Nov. 1688.? en ?Aankomst van S.K.H.D.P. van Orangie, den 15. en 16. Nov. in Engeland.? Kopergravure vervaardigd door Romeijn de Hooghe. Afm.  43,5 x 53,5 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

CAMDEN, William
London: M. Flesher, for J. Tonson, 1688. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. William Camden has long been known as one of the best 17th-century English chroniclers. His histories of England as well as English royals have been some of the most popular works regarding the history of Great Britain. ont> G. Larkin: London. Ont> G. Larkin: London, 1688 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very scarce copy of this anonymous pamphlet discussing James II's Declaration of Indulgence, one of the factors that led to his deposition in the 1688 Glorious Revolution. A very scarce work. This work is quarto, with the signatures running as A-C4. ESTC citation number R10242. Printed by G. Larkin, at the Two Swans without Bishopsgate in London. Collated from the ESTC, complete. This work discusses King James II's Declaration of Indulgence, a proclamation issues to try and start establishing the freedom of religion in Britain. The intention was to suspend penal laws enforcing people to conform to the Church of England, giving them the right to worship in their own homes or chapels as the saw fit. The declaration granted toleration to Christian denominations, Catholic, and Protestants. This possibly shows James' intention, as he was a Catholic, which was a minority religion at the time, and was reviled by the majority of his subjects. Some of the reasons that this declaration was controversial by the British public was because they thought that the toleration would extend to paganism, Island, or Judaism, which the Anglicans in England opposed. Very few clergy read the declaration in Church, and this work was written in reply to those clergy, in particular to the author of a work titled 'The Vanity of All Pretensions for Toleration'. In response to James' delaraction, seven bishops, alongside the Archbishop of Canterbury, presented a petition to the King declaring the declaration illegal. This … [Click Below for Full Description]

ont> George Larkin : London, 1688. A very scarce third edition of the political journalist Henry Care's interesting pamphlet looking at the penal laws of the Church of England, and the persecution of the laws against dissenters. An interesting work on the lead up to the Glorious Revolution The third edition of this work. A very scarce work. ESTC citation number R13546. Collated from the ESTC, complete. This work is a quarto, the signatures run as [A4], B-C4. 'Draconica' is a compendium of the penal laws, a series of laws that sought to uphold the Church of England against Catholics and Protestants. The laws imposed punishments, civil penalties, and civil disabilities upon 'dissenters'. This work lays out the laws, with the author's intent to expose the persecutory practices in the Anglican church towards dissenters. The author urges dissenters to support King James II, after James II's Declaration of Indulgence, in which the King tried to take a step towards establishing freedom of religion in Britain. The Church of England were greatly opposed to the Declaration of Indulgence, as it meant that their penal laws enforcing the public to conform to the Church of England would be suspended. This is an important and interesting work, as it shows the state of Britain in the lead up to the Glorious Revolution, which happened in November of 1688, in which James II was deposed. Written by Henry Care, who was a court propagandist alongside L'Estrange and William Penn after James II came to the throne. He was a political journalist, and his publications include 'English Liberties'. He … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes BLAEU (Alkmaar 1571 - Amsterdam 1663)
1688. "Mappa del Giappone e della Corea dall'Atlas Sinensis di Joan Blaeu. Anche se intitolata ""Iaponia Regnum"", la caratteristica più interessante di questa mappa è che si tratta della prima a mostrare correttamente la Corea correttamente come una penisola, a differenza delle precedenti che la raffiguravano come un'isola. Incisione in rame, bella coloritura coeva, piccoli restauri visibilie al verso, per il resto in buono stato di conservazione." Nice example of Blaeu's map of Japan & Korea from Joan Blaeu's Atlas Sinensis. While titled as a map of Japan, perhaps the single most noteworthy feature of this map is as the first map to show Korea correctly as a peninsula, as opposed to an island on earlier maps. Copperplate with fine original colour, washed and refreshed, otherwise good condition. Walters, 38; OAG, 28

La Fontaine, Jean de.
1688. Anvers: Henry van Dunewalt, (parts 1, 2, and 4) and La Haye: Henry van Bulderen, (part 3), 1688. 4 vols. in one, thick 12mo, (18), 1-233 (5, table)pp. Engraved general title by Romeyn de Hooghe, separate letterpress titles to each volume, small engraved plate at the head of each fable all by Henrik Cause. Old speckled calf, gilt backstrip, gilt rubbed largely away but quite sound. In all an excellent copy of a very scarce and important book. § First printing thus, this copy inscribed at the front in an early hand "Au Comte Frobenius de Furstenberg" with the donor's initials inked out. As there were two Furstenberg families it is unclear exactly to whom this copy was donated. Landwehr (p. 314) notes: "The first illustrated edition of [La Fontaine's Fables] was published in March 1668... in Paris. It would take yet twelve years before the 124 fables were published in the Low Countries... in 1688... the first illustrated edition was published in Antwerpen by Henry van Dunewalt who commissioned Henrik Cause to make the illustrations... And so the first illustrated Fables Choisies saw the light outside of France. Simultaneously or a little later it was also published in The Hague by Henry van Bulderen." Landwehr F-119.

Trier, Erzbistum -
Kupferstich-Karte bei F. de Wit, ca. 1688, altkoloriert. 48 x 58,5 cm. Etwas Abklatsch der roten Farbe der Kartusche. Falz am Oberrand mit hinterlegtem Einriss. Hellwig, Mittelrhein und Moselland im Bild alter Karten, Nr. 55. Carhart, De Wit S. 283, Nr. 65.1. Hellwig hatte schon 1985 darauf hingewiesen, was Carhart offenbar schlicht übersehen hat. Gutes Exemplar in schönem Altkolorit.

Engraved armorial title-vignette by Francesco Nacci which includes a figure holding a football, two folding engraved plates, the first by Alexander Cecchini showing the players lined up for the start of play in the Piazza Sante Croce and the second a diagram of their positions. A superb copy of the first edition of Pietro Bini's anthology of works on Florentine football, published to commemmorate the game played during the wedding festivities of Ferdinando de' Medici and Princess Violante Beatrice of Bavaria in December to January 1688-9. The players in this celebratory game were all members of the Florentine aristocracy and they are all listed as teams at the end under 'Europei (color Rosino) and Asiatici (Color Verde)'. The works in this anthology include a newly edited edition of Bard's 'Discorso', originally published in 1580 and which was the first printed book on football. Also there is a Latin treatise on the game by the Jesuit G.B. Ferrari, a description of the game in Greek verse by Georgios Koresios followed by a translation into Tuscan dialect by A.M. Salvini, and a 'Cantata in musica' by Jacopo del Borgo.
