Halifax, George Savile, Marquis Of
Not Given, 1688. Book. Good+. Hardcover. Not Given. This pamphlet, 16 pages, collated in quarto has been put into hard navy boards with a leather spine label lettered in gilt. The above grade may be thought of as a compromise between the books newish covers, pastedowns and endsheets and the very aged, rough text. Previous owner has penciled Halifax's name, Wing # H291, and the date 1688 at top of sheet number 1, which consists of title and text only. No cover sheet or printing/data, date are present. There is a tiny penned note at the last sheets top. While all text is reasonably legible, the bottom edge of the pages are chipped gently up almost to the texts lower extremity. Margins at top and side average 3/4 inch. Age darkening and graying are present throughout, and the text is quite edgeworn as may seem obvious from the bottoms description. Book measures 9 x 7". The navy boards have a crisp, unbumped, newish appearance..

Published anonymously by Brown it was a satire on John Dryden. In 1688 he published the first of the satires which brought him notice: Reason of Mr Bayes Changing his Religion, a fierce though entertaining and witty anti-Dryden pamphlet. He returned to attack Dryden, under the pseudonym Dudley Tomkinson, in subsequently published parts to this work, and on many other occasions. His satire was typically directed at a handful of targets, whom he attacked repeatedly, often in epigrams. After Dryden: Traitor to God, and rebel to the pen, Priest-ridden poet, perjur'd son of Ben ('To Mr Dryden on his Conversion') the most frequent was Sir Richard Blackmore: Thine is the only muse in British ground Whose satire tickles and whose praises wound. PASCAL, Blaise
London: Jacob Tonson, 1688. First Edition. calf. Near Fine, complete copy of this classic. The First Edition in English of Pascal's classic Les Pensees (1665). Octavo bound in early calf neatly rebacked at a later date in a slightly lighter shade of leather. Complete with front and rear blanks: [42], 375, [1] pages. The French mathematician and theologian, who invented the first digital calculator, wrestled with the inability of reason to understand God. His work with Fermat on the nature of probability presaged the development of modern decision theory, on the basis of which he argued that belief in God, although not rational, is a good bet: "Le coeur a ses raisons que le raison ne connait point" (The heart has its reasons that reason does not know at all.). Pascal died painfully at the age of 39 from what was likely cancer.

The description of the country is a satirical allegory Jansénie high metaphorical value, a narrator describes an extraordinary country and the manners of its inhabitants, the country being Jansenism. The process is most effective when the book is modeled on the relationships of the travel time, essentially utopias. The book is undoubtedly one of the strangest criticism which gave rise Jansenism. Firmian Peter (Petrus Firmianus) is the pseudonym of Lisieux father Zechariah, Angel Lambert. Entered the Capuchin order, Zechariah of Lisieux (1582-1660) preached in several major cities and to Louis XIII. It was a mission for 20 years in England. He is the author of several satirical works on the vices of his time. A new description of the country Jansénie, greatly increased by the Jesuits, will be published later. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
