PASCAL, Blaise
London: Jacob Tonson, 1688. First Edition. Hardcover. Owner name of E. J. Hodgson in ink on the top of the title page and on the front endpaper with his armorial bookplate on the pastedown. Near Fine. The First Edition in English of Pascal's classic Les Pensees (1665). Octavo bound in early calf leather neatly rebacked. Lacking the front and rear blanks and the rear endpaper, with the bifolium *S bound between S6 (the Advertisement leaf) and S7: [42], 1 - 263, [9], 269 - 375, [1] pages. The French mathematician and theologian, who invented the first digital calculator, wrestled with the inability of reason to understand God. His work with Fermat on the nature of probability presaged the development of modern decision theory, on the basis of which he argued that belief in God, although not rational, is a good bet: "Le coeur a ses raisons que le raison ne connait point" (The heart has its reasons that reason does not know at all.). Pascal died painfully at the age of 39 from what was likely cancer. The owner was likely Edward Jarvis Hodgson of Prince Edward Island who was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1879 and who worked for the Prince Edward Island railway and other federal government departments between 1882 and approximately 1889. From 1891 until 1910, he was Master of the Rolls and an Assistant Judge of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Prince Edward Island, and from 1896 until his death in 1911, Chancellor of King's College University. [MILITARY HISTORY].
First and only edition of an account of the second year of what was to be known as the Nine Years' War (1688-1697), "written by an English officer, who was there during the last campaign" (title-page). The Nine Years' War was a conflict between France and the "confederate forces": England, the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, Spain, the Dutch Republic and Savoy. The author narrates the events in the Dutch Republic and Spanish Netherlands from 9 June 1689 to 4 October 1689. He lists places and cities where the army passed through or camped, often describing the cities in great detail, commenting on their fortification, prominent architecture, customs and more. Included at the end is "a list of our army as it was drawn up at Tillroy camp" (pp. 25-32), listing the horse- and foot-regiments and dragoons, together with the names and nationalities of their commanders, the colours of the soldiers uniforms, and the number of men. With an inscription in ink on title-page, dated 1871. Page 26-27 very closely trimmed, leaves browned, some faint and mostly marginal water stains, otherwise a good copy.ESTC R36213; Ira D. ALDAY Y ASPEE (AZPEE), Manuel de.
Two beautiful colonial imprints from Lima, Peru, bound together in one volume, containing interesting accounts of two synods held in Santiago, the capital of Chile, in 1688 and 1763. The Synod of 1688 was organized by the Bishop of Santiago, Don Bernardo Carrasco y Saavedra, and that of 1763 by Bishop Dr Don Manuel de Alday y Aspee. The description of the Synod of 1688 was first printed in Lima in 1690. That of 1763 is printed here for the first time and the two works were apparently designed for publication together, though they name different printing offices (they are often found bound together). The accounts give detailed information on both ecclesiastical matters and daily life in colonial Chile, including the text of the constitution outlining the rules of the Catholic Church. The accounts also describe a variety of cultural events such as dances, bullfights and games. With a manuscript note by the notary Nicolas Herrera on the first half-title. With the first leaf of the first work nearly detached from the book block and attached to the pastedown, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some marginal water stains on the first few leaves and four leaves somewhat browned. The parchment cover appears to have been taken from an older book. The parchment is wrinkled and shows various holes and folds from its use for the older binding. Accounts of synods, containing information on the church and daily life in colonial Chile in the 17th and 18th century.Leclerq 1946; Medina 1210; Palau 325995-325996; Sabin 11036 (2nd work only).

Vincenzo CORONELLI (Venezia 1650 - 1718)
"Scarce and historically important map of the Siamese capital of Ayutthaya, by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, issued immediately prior to the Siamese Revolution of 1688, which henceforth restricted European activities in the kingdom. This example of the map is taken from the very rare Coronelli's ""Citta, Fortezze e, Isole, e Porti principlai dell'Europa in Pianta et in Elevatione, Descritte, e Publicate Ad uso dell'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti dal Padre Maestro Coronelli Lettore, e Cosmografo della Serenissima Republica di Venezia"" printed in Venice by Domenico Padovani in 1689. Glorious Revolution - Romeijn de Hooghe, 1688
1688. WILLEM III VERTREKT NAAR ENGELAND VOOR DE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION 'Vertrek van S.K.H. na Engeland; den 11. Nov. 1688.' en 'Aankomst van S.K.H.D.P. van Orangie, den 15. en 16. Nov. in Engeland.' Kopergravure vervaardigd door Romeijn de Hooghe. Afm. 43,5 x 53,5 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

BRADLEY, Richard.
First and only edition of the Dutch translation of a philosophical overview of nature by Richard Bradley (1688-1732), examining minerals, flora and fauna, in an attempt to demonstrate their practical applications, particularly in agriculture. It is therefore an early example of the conceptualization of the productive and profitable aspects of the natural world. It also includes a description of infertile lands in England with suggestions for improvements, a description of gardens in Great Britain with improvements for the growing of fruit trees, and a chapter on the maintaining of grapevines. It was first published in English in 1721 as A philosophical account of the works of nature. The present edition is translated from the second English edition of 1739, which adds an appendix on fleas and lice, Flemish agriculture and some suggestions for speeding up the growth of several crops."Bradley was a prolific science writer, ... His style was clear and readable, and his reputation immense; indeed, his publications did much to encourage a scientific approach to gardening and husbandry" (DSB).Minor water stain at the foot of the gutter margins of the first 15 leaves and some leaves slightly browned. Spine a bit soiled. Very good copy.Cat. bibl. Natura Artis Magistra 1323 (erroneously counting 31 plates); STCN (5 copies); cf. Highly interesting collection of five 17th-century print series (one a set of plates for an illustrated book) all in the field of art, drawing and ornamentation. They seem likely to have been printed together sometime around or soon after 1688.Ad 1: A beautiful print series intended as plates for a manual to learn the art of drawing and painting, ranging from images of the human body to battle fields, by the famous French artist Abraham Bosse (1602-1676). In the event the plates were published on their own and the makeup varies from set to set. Ad 2: A numbered series of 30 engravings of ornamentation that could be used in sculptural, architectural, art and book illustration, including putti, grotesque masks, garlands, etc. Paolo Farinati (1524-1606) worked mostly in his native city of Verona. Ad 3: A series of 4 prints showing artists at work, intended to illustrate art technique. Two are devoted to drawing and the other two are devoted to painting. These prints are often considered part of the larger series described here separately as ad 1.Ad 4: A beautiful series of 4 prints representing the four elements in the form of two male and two female figures, elegantly dressed, with various items related to the relevant element. Blum tentatively dates the series to 1630, making it one of Bosse's earliest mature works.Ad 5: A complete set of the plates made to illustrate the first and only edition of Pierre Bullet's work on surveying (Paris, 1688). [RUSSELL, John].
Rare first and only edition of a controversial Puritan satire in verse, probably written by John Russell (d. 1688), but sometimes attributed to John Rhodes, minister of Enborne, and John Robinson (1575-1625). The anti-Catholic poem criticizes Arminianism, based on the teachings of the Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609), who according to Russell was sent by the pope to trick Protestants. "In the manner of John Donne's Ignatius his Conclave, Russell describes a conclave in Hell which reveals that Arminius was sent as a missionary from Hell to establish popery by the back door while seeming to be a Protestant" (Colclough). Russell links the anti-Calvinist tendencies in England to the influence of Spain and the pope; he praises the anti-Spanish and anti-Catholic preacher Thomas Scott (d. 1626), and laments the loss of the days when England resisted Spain. With the armorial bookplate of the Lord Fairfax of Cameron. With some ink annotations on flyleaf, title-page ruled with (now faint) red ink. The first six leaves with marginal restorations, some foxing. Without the folding frontispiece, included in a small number of copies. In fair condition.D. Colclough, Freedom of speech in early Stuart England, p. 118; ESTC S115559; Sabin 70762..

ESPINOSA, Antonio de.
Very rare first and only early edition of a letter written by the Spanish friar Antonio de Espinosa at Algiers, after the city had been bombed by the French navy in 1688. Espinosa worked as an administrator at the hospitals of the Trinitarian Order in the city. He describes the arrival of the French fleet on 26 June, the diplomatic actions between the French and the ruler of Algiers, and the subsequent bombing of the city. The bombing led to reciprocal trials and executions by Algiers's government against the non-native inhabitants of the city, including Espinosa. Algiers was an important base for pirates, who started attacking French ships after the city signed a peace treaty with Great Britain. The French responded with bombardments in 1683 and 1688, which led to a peace treaty in 1690. Browned and with a water stain in the head margin, otherwise in good condition.Palau 82664; WorldCat (1 copy)..

PINTER VON DER AU, Johann Christoph.
Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. ... The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library stamp on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy.

BEDE The Venerable.
Apud Ioannem Wilhelmvm Friessem juniorem. The Venerable Bedes Opera 8 vols. in 4 Pigskin Cologne 1688Bede the Venerable Saint 673-735. Biblical scholar and Father of English History. Best known for his Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum Church History of the English People. This. a primary source for early English history owes its value to Bedes care in collecting information from those most likely to know his meticulous listing of his authorities and the separation of historical fact from hearsay and tradition. Its interest is enhanced by the vividness of his descriptions.--F. L. Cross Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church p.148. He entered the monastery at age 7 at Wearmouth and then soon thereafter Jarrow where he spent the rest of his life was ordained a deacon at 19 and made a priest in his 30th year. He was a voluminous writer including many commentaries on the scriptures translations of the scriptures into Anglo Saxon lives of the saints etc. In his autobiographical account Bede lists over thirty of his written works. Nearly all his works survive. The most important loss is that of the St. Johns gospel translation. Had it survived it would have been the earliest substantial piece of English prose. Among the most important and influential of Bedes works were those on chronology and computation. Easter had a special edge for Bede because of the divergence between the calculation of Easter which he saw as correct and that used by many Celtic churches which could in certain circumstances diverge from the Roman Easter by up to twenty-eight days. Bedes treatment of … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Browne
London: Printed by J. D. for Henry White, 1688. Good, nicely rebacked with new spine. Binding good and strong. Some signs of wear and age. Please see photos and full description. Up for sale is this extremely rare antique 1688 leather bound copy of John Browne's, "The Instrumental Navigator, or the Mariners Art made Easie in Observation and Operation. In Plain Sailing, Mercator's Sailing, and Great Circle Sailing..." The book is overall in good condition some signs of wear and age. It has been nicely rebacked with a new leather spine and new endpapers. The leather covers have some scuffing and wear with some corner wear and edge wear. The binding of the book is good and strong. The book is illustrated with a small in text diagram and a folding plate. The folding plate looks like it is incomplete and is likely missing a section. This is apparently a very rare title, I couldn't find any other example to compare it; however, the text of the book appears to be complete. There are a couple of leaves with some negative space in the text which looks it was originally reserved for some small diagrams which never made it into the book during the publishing process. The book is 112 pages long with an additional 16 unnumbered pages of tables in the rear. The pages are toned from age with some heavy tanning to the first few and last few pages. The title page is somewhat fragile with some chipping around the edges and some tears. Some of the other pages have some rattiness around the edges and some small chips and tears. The last few pages have some minor worming. Along with that the … [Click Below for Full Description]

DONADO, Giovanni Battista.
Venice: Andrea Poletti, 1688. Venice: Andrea Poletti,, 1688. The first published survey of Turkish, Persian, and Arabic literature Duodecimo (149 x 83 mm). Later, probably 19th-century vellum over pasteboards, unlettered. With 4 folding leaves of woodcut music at end, printed on both sides. Two oval blindstamps on title pressed flat. Minor stains and blemishes, a few edges roughly opened, small paper restoration not affecting text at foot of B6, a very good copy. First edition of the first published survey of "Turkish literature". Ottoman scholars had recently undertaken a massive project of re-appropriation and synthesis of earlier literatures in lands then under Ottoman rule, including Greco-Latin, Persian, and Arabic materials. The book is a survey of Ottoman studies in the fields of grammar, poetry, logic, mathematics, geometry, optics, music, medicine, herbal alchemy, chemistry, history, politics, geography, and devotion, interspersed with translations prepared by Venetian dragoman Gianrinaldo Carli (who also translated Katib Çelebi into Italian) and other apprentice dragomans. It concludes with an exhortation for additional translations of books from Turkish, Persian, and Arabic. The nominal author, Giovanni Battista Donà, had been the Venetian bailo (resident consul) at Istanbul from 1680 to 1684, but the book is the fruit of an extensive collection and translation project undertaken by a group of young apprentice dragomans working under Donà in the Venetian embassy in Istanbul. The German philosopher Leibniz, passing through Venice in 1690, remarked that the Della … [Click Below for Full Description]
