(Thurston, Robert Henry. A History Of The Growth Of The Steam-Engine, 2008, p. 49).In 1681 Papin published his invention of the "safety-valve", and in 1687 he outlined another invention, the transmission of power from one point to another, by means of an air-pump. "At this time Papin's interest in air pumps and steam pressure merged to provide an innovative solution to the widespread need for raising water. He considered first a piston ballistic pump using gunpowder, the idea for which he had earlier discussed with Huygens but claimed as his own (in a letter of 6 March 1704 to Leibniz). PSELLI, Michaelis [Michael Psellus].
Sumptibus Joh. Sebastiani Richelii, Kiloni, [Kiel], 1688. Hardcover, 12mo (13 x 7.5 cms). Contemporary full vellum, [12] + 166 pp. Text in Latin and Greek on opposite pages. Includes index of authors cited; with head- and tail-piece. Footnotes. First seven words of title in Greek letters: (transcribed: Michaelou tou Psellou Peri energeias daimonon dialogos). Michael Constantine Psellus (1018 – 1178 C.E) was a monk, philosopher, politician and historian, widely considered to be one of the great writers and thinkers of the Byzantine era. Psellus was born in Constantinople (modern Istanbul) and served as an advisor to a number of emperors, as well as becoming the head Professor at the newly founded University of Constantinople, where he played a key role in the reintroduction of the study of Greek thought, particularly that of Plato. He wrote on a wide variety of subjects. His "De Operatione Daemonum," is basically a discourse on the nature and classification of demons, presented in the form of a dialogue between two individuals, Timothy and "a Thracian." Byzantine magical and hermetic works are often cited as having been the stepping stone between Greek thought and the development of Western Hermeticism during the Renaissance. Psellus' "De Operatione Daemonum" was an important work that was reprinted a number of times (mostly in Greek and Latin) following its first publication (in French translation) in 1576. It was considered of such importance that it was anthologised into several collections of hermetic texts, along with the works of Iamblichus, Proclus and Hermes Trismegi … [Click Below for Full Description]

This verse narrative describes the festivities - including illuminations, triumphal arches, bonfires and bullfights - celebrated in Lisbon upon the marriage of D. Pedro II (1648-1706) to Maria Sophia Isabella (1666-1699), daughter of Philipp Wilhelm of Neuburg, Count Palatine. In the prologue, the author notes that the royal nuptials can be better described by a poem than by a prose narrative: "Bem sey que as excelencias destes Regios Nupciais Elogios, mais erão Sugeito para as eloquencias de hum Poema, do que materia para as limitações de huma Rellação." (f. A3v). The 92 ramos give lengthy poetic descriptions of Maria Sophia's arrival in Lisbon, a day of bullfights (pp. 159-252), a fireworks display (pp. 253-290), and a second day of bullfights (pp. 291-328). Each section of the poem is preceded by a few lines in italic explaining the … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Miles Flesher for Jacob Tonson, 1688.|~| |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition in English. Garcilaso de la Vega's most important work, The Royal Commentaries of Peru, is a valuable source of information about the conquest of Peru and the lives and legends of the Inca. Garcilaso (1539-1617) was the son of the Spanish conqueror, Sebastian Garcilaso de la Vega y Vargas, who had married an Inca princess named Chimpa Ocllo, the grand-daughter of the great Tupac Yupanqui, the last of the Incas. "The Inca mother taught her son the language of the ancient inhabitants of Peru, and suggested to him the idea of writing a history of these people. For this purpose, Garcilaso travelled over the entire empire of the Incas, got as much information suitable for his purpose as he could gather from both the natives and the new colonists, and consulted the few remaining monuments of that race... As a historian of Peru and its people, Garcilaso enjoyed singular advantages, for his mother, an Inca princess and her relations told him everything concerning their ancestors, omitting nothing, as they considered him one of their race. On the other hand, his father, who was the Governor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Viviani's response gives an interesting description of various hydraulic and engineering techniques as he calls for the construction of run-off channels, weirs, and training walls. He spends a good portion of his treatise on the discussion of different building materials, and advocates the use of relatively expensive woods such as oak and chestnut, arguing that, in the long run, they are more durable and ultimately cheaper. In his introduction Viviani outlines the consequences of the rising of the riverbed for the agriculture of the Florentine countryside and the economy of the city. * Cinti 159; Riccardi I.627.

White after William Faithorne. A rare large copy, measuring 365 by 225 mm (rather than 315 by 200 mm, the dimensions of the ordinary-paper copies, often described as a large-paper copy, but, as Jackson, Pforzheimer and others have pointed out, there is only issue issue, with the watermark (a bunch-of-grapes) always the same, so "this is evidently a cataloguer's fiction."). Contemporary speckled calf, spine in six compartments, expertly rebacked with original red morocco lettering piece laid-down; edges speckled red; plain period end papers. Complete in all respects, with clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The plates are all excellent impressions and the book-block is strong, with both boards firmly attached—overall, an exceptional copy. TITUS, Content; Moore Family of Newtown[e], Long Island, New York
Manuscript Document Signed. One page, edges untrimmed. 12.25" x 8". Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, New York. June 19, 1688. Document Signed by Gorsham Moore, Samuel Moore, Joseph Moore, Content Titus, etc. with their black wax seals. Also signed and affirmed by Lambert Woodhull and Daniell Phillips, clerk. Verso with slightly over ten lines of text docketed by Daniell Phillips, signed again by Samuel Moore and Content Titus. Old fold lines, small paper defects, else very good to near fine. Content Titus (1643-1730) was one of the first three elders of the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown (one of the oldest churches in Queens) and a prominent citizen of this Long Island community. On several occasions Titus was sent to the island of Jamaica to protest a tax forced upon Newtown. Titus lived first in Oyster Bay, then Huntington, and then moved to Newtown in 1672 where he purportedly married Rev. John Moore's daughter, Elizabeth Moore. This colonial New York manuscript document shows Content Titus as purchaser of a portion of land once owned by Rev. John Moore, and shows the four sons of the reverend, his heirs, as recipients of an award of property previously held by their father. The agreement also shows that all five men were to receive equal lot shares. A very nice 17th Century American document pertaining to Newtown [a.k.a. New Town and Newtowne] Long Island, and some of its earlier illustrious citizens. .
