CELLARIUS (Christoph)
Zeitz, Johann Bielck 1688 - in-8 carré, [4] ff. n. ch. Deschamps, 321-322.

BEEK, Anna
1688. The Hague: Anna Beek. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 15 x 18". Sheet measures 21 x 25". This scarce map by Anna Beek depicts the Belgian city of Ath under attack by French troops during the Nine Years' War (1688--1697). Dating to approximately 1725, the map shows the siege of 1697, in which French troops stationed around the fortified city attempted to win it from Spanish control. The city's fortifications, walls, and surrounding moats are all depicted, as are the locales of French troops and embattlements in accordance with a key printed on a trompe-l'oeil stone plinth in the lower right corner of the map. Arcing black lines show the paths of cannonballs over the city's walls. The map is in good condition with vibrant hand coloring and wide margins. Minor wear is concentrated in the margins, not affecting the image. Anna Beek was a late-17th century publisher and engraver of maps based in the Hague. Her detailed maps and battle plans are often found in composite atlases and have become highly valued due to their quality and scarcity.

Garcilasso de la Vega; translated by Paul Rycaut
London: Miles Flesher for Samuel Heyrick, 1688. First Edition in English. Half Leather. Folio. THE FIRST PART: TREATING OF THE ORIGINAL OF THEIR INCAS OR KINGS; OF THEIR IDOLATRY; OF THEIR LAWS AND GOVERNMENT BOTH IN PEACE AND WAR; OF THE REIGNS AND CONQUESTS OF THE INCAS; WITH MANY OTHER PARTICULARS RELATING TO THEIR EMPIRE AND POLICIES BEFORE SUCH TIME AS THE SPANIARDS INVADED THEIR COUNTRIES; THE SECOND PART: DESCRIBING THE MANNER BY WHICH THAT NEW WORLD WAS CONQUERED BY THE SPANIARDS; ALSO THE CIVIL WARS BETWEEN THE PIZARRISTS AND THE ALMAGRIANS, OCCASIONED BY QUARRELS ARISING ABOUT THE DIVISION OF THAT LAND; THE RISE AND FALL OF REBELS; AND OTHER PARTICULARS CONTAINED IN THAT HISTORY. [viii], 1019, [8]; A4, B2, C4-6N4, 6O2, *2-**2. Early half calf with discreet mid-20th century(?) reback, early spine and label laid down. Marbled paper over boards is quite abraded, particularly the back board that is abraded to the board. Rubricated title page; 11 engraved plates, all present; paper flaws with very slight loss of text on 2 leaves only; intermittent foxing/spotting and toning as you might expect; this copy bears the bookplate of Lionel Damer on the front pastedown. Damer was a late 18th century Parliamentarian. A nice copy of one of four variants of this edition--there is no known priority. Without question, the most important source of Peruvian history, written by Garcilasso de la Vega in two parts, the first issued in Lisbon in 1608 [Comentarios Reales de los Incas], the second in Cordoba in 1617 [Historia General del Peru], both astonishingly scarce. In the preface the author, probably Nicolas de Valnay, observes that although all flowers can be regarded as testimony to God's glory, he chooses to concentrate on the four he considers truely exceptional. The book opens with the tulip which the author declares to be the king of flowers. He then passes to the anemone, then the carnation and lastely the auricula. At the time these were still unknown to most European gardeners, most having been gradually introduced into Europe from Turkey, the East Indies and other exotic lands from 1593 (when Clusius cultivated the first Dutch tulip) to the author's day. The author also names prominent cultivators of these four flowers, but doubts whether they display sufficient interest in or knowledge of their flowers. A good copy. Binding slightly damaged near the spine and corners. With the bookplate of the Archiv Deutsche Gärtnerböse in Aachen, and an owner's inscription of Barré on the verso of the title-page. A passionate contribution to 17th-century flower growing, notably concerning sorts recently introduced to Europe from exotic lands.

the Honourable Sir W.C
London - 1688, 1688 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A early edition of The Character of a Trimmer Re-bound in quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards and gilt lettering. Early edition. Although published under Coventry's name, the authorship of the work was acknowledged by Lord Halifax to whom it is generally ascribed. Cf. DNB and BM. COPAC. Of Halifaxs authorship, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us, Halifax had anonymously distributed three manuscript copies of The Character of a Trimmer, one to the archbishop of Canterbury with a letter asking him to deliver it to the king. It circulated in manuscript until pirated for publication in 1688. In it he alluded to policies that he had opposed in council; the genre of a character and arguments balanced on the notion of the golden mean enabled him to do so without betraying his authorship, which he disclosed after 1688. George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax PC,1633 1695, was an English statesman, writer, and politician. He was nephew of Sir William Coventry, who is said to have influenced his political opinions. He entered public life with all the advantages of lineage, political connections, great wealth and estates, and uncommon abilities. Of his literary life, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states, Halifax was better known as a politician than an author. His eight publications, five of which were first circulated in manuscript, were all anonymous and of his political and private opinions, in an age when radical ideas in religion and politics threatened the traditional structure of soc … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORDEN, Robert
London: Morden and Cockerill, 1688. Lovely miniature world atlas with rubricated title page. Includes 76 maps plus 2 bonus maps not listed in the index: Armenia and a hand colored Bermuda map. The first 17 maps plus Jamaica, Chili, and Japan with early crude but pleasing color with some bleed through to verso. The Maldives map and Asia map are printed upside down although surrounding text on these pages is printed correctly. Small 4to, full contemporary leather with hand tooled design, first fly leaf added, corners worn and strengthened, covers re-enforced with new hinges. The maps in Robert Morden's atlas "Geography Rectified" are some of the first miniature maps engraved and published in England. Produced in 1688, the atlas is noted and valued for its maps of the British colonies, which Morden produced to fulfill the growing demand for colonial information that accompanied the settlements' increasing prosperity. Today, these colonial maps are some of the earliest such maps obtainable. Morden's detailed work shows his debt not only to British cartographic precedent, but also to French maps of this period, which pursued a comparable interest in the burgeoning New World. Robert Morden (c.1650-1703) was a geographer, publisher, bookseller, and globe maker who collaborated with many other publishers in particular Thomas Cockerill to produce high quality atlases (Burden 519-524). Very good(+). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
