VALNAY, Nicolas de?].
- Goldsmith BMC STC French C-1383; cf. Tomasi, Oak Spring Flora 34 (1688 ed.); not in Hunt; Quérard. Second edition of a "sophisticated little volume" (Tomasi) on rare flowers, describing four of the most highly prized flowers of the period and giving instructions for their cultivation. In the preface the author, probably Nicolas de Valnay, observes that although all flowers can be regarded as testimony to God's glory, he chooses to concentrate on the four he considers truely exceptional. The book opens with the tulip which the author declares to be the king of flowers. He then passes to the anemone, then the carnation and lastely the auricula. At the time these were still unknown to most European gardeners, most having been gradually introduced into Europe from Turkey, the East Indies and other exotic lands from 1593 (when Clusius cultivated the first Dutch tulip) to the author's day. The author also names prominent cultivators of these four flowers, but doubts whether they display sufficient interest in or knowledge of their flowers. A good copy. Binding slightly damaged near the spine and corners. With the bookplate of the Archiv Deutsche Gärtnerböse in Aachen, and an owner's inscription of Barré on the verso of the title-page. A passionate contribution to 17th-century flower growing, notably concerning sorts recently introduced to Europe from exotic lands.

the Honourable Sir W.C
London - 1688, 1688 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A early edition of The Character of a Trimmer Re-bound in quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards and gilt lettering. Early edition. Although published under Coventry's name, the authorship of the work was acknowledged by Lord Halifax to whom it is generally ascribed. Cf. DNB and BM. COPAC. Of Halifaxs authorship, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us, Halifax had anonymously distributed three manuscript copies of The Character of a Trimmer, one to the archbishop of Canterbury with a letter asking him to deliver it to the king. It circulated in manuscript until pirated for publication in 1688. In it he alluded to policies that he had opposed in council; the genre of a character and arguments balanced on the notion of the golden mean enabled him to do so without betraying his authorship, which he disclosed after 1688. George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax PC,1633 1695, was an English statesman, writer, and politician. He was nephew of Sir William Coventry, who is said to have influenced his political opinions. He entered public life with all the advantages of lineage, political connections, great wealth and estates, and uncommon abilities. Of his literary life, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states, Halifax was better known as a politician than an author. His eight publications, five of which were first circulated in manuscript, were all anonymous and of his political and private opinions, in an age when radical ideas in religion and politics threatened the traditional structure of soc … [Click Below for Full Description]

MORDEN, Robert
London: Morden and Cockerill, 1688. Lovely miniature world atlas with rubricated title page. Includes 76 maps plus 2 bonus maps not listed in the index: Armenia and a hand colored Bermuda map. The first 17 maps plus Jamaica, Chili, and Japan with early crude but pleasing color with some bleed through to verso. The Maldives map and Asia map are printed upside down although surrounding text on these pages is printed correctly. Small 4to, full contemporary leather with hand tooled design, first fly leaf added, corners worn and strengthened, covers re-enforced with new hinges. The maps in Robert Morden's atlas "Geography Rectified" are some of the first miniature maps engraved and published in England. Produced in 1688, the atlas is noted and valued for its maps of the British colonies, which Morden produced to fulfill the growing demand for colonial information that accompanied the settlements' increasing prosperity. Today, these colonial maps are some of the earliest such maps obtainable. Morden's detailed work shows his debt not only to British cartographic precedent, but also to French maps of this period, which pursued a comparable interest in the burgeoning New World. Robert Morden (c.1650-1703) was a geographer, publisher, bookseller, and globe maker who collaborated with many other publishers in particular Thomas Cockerill to produce high quality atlases (Burden 519-524). Very good(+). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CUBERO, Pedro
Zarazoga & Valencia,: Pasqual Bueno & Iayme de Bordazar, 1688 &, 1697.. Two works bound together, square octavo, woodcut headpiece, some spotting and very insignificant damage to the lower corners of a few pages (not affecting text); a handsome copy in nineteenth-century polished calf, spine banded and gilt, joints starting but still very firm. The rare complete account of Cubero's travels, comprising two separately-published and entertaining works by Pedro Cubero Sebasti·n (1645-c.1697). Each is complete in its own right, and the two are only occasionally seen together as here to form a complete work.Cubero was a Spanish priest best known for the first work here, his account of his journey around the world. In what has been claimed to have been the first circumnavigation from west to east, Cubero travelled mainly by land rather than sea. He was certainly one of the earliest circumnavigators to travel independently rather than as part of an expedition. He gives much detail on the peoples he observed, told with a great deal of charm. The account includes interesting descriptions of exotic destinations such as India and China, in particular. The final leg of his journey took him overland from Acapulco to Veracruz, and he includes detail on the religious activities and settlements in New Spain. It is entirely possible to trace his route today based on the descriptions he gives, through what remain very remote areas of Mexico. The second work here is a continuation of Cubero's travels, and certainly the rarer of the two. 'This second part concentrates largely on his adventures w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe ROSACCIO Pordenone circa 1530 ? Venezia 1621
Xilografia, in perfette condizioni. Charming miniature wood block map of the World by the Italian XVIth and XVIIth century umanist and cartographer Giuseppe Rosaccio. Taken from the 1688 Bologna "Teatro del mondo e sue parti cioe Europa, Africa, Asia, et America". For this edition new larger wood blocks were cut by Giuseppe Moretti. The maps are now printed from one wood block and not two as for the previous editions. This is therefore the rarest and most desirable editions. The interior is filled with mountains, trees and with a few places represented by large castles. The book was very popular and many edition where printed in Treviso, Bologna, Florence, Verona, Venice, Viterbo. Bologna Bologna King, Miniature Antique Maps, pp. 72,73. 800 600

Rare. Dimensioni 365x565. Magnificent bird's-eye plan of the harbor and city of Valletta seen from the northwest. Beautifully engraved with a unique pictorial title cartouche, ships, a coat of arms and a decorative key locating 46 sites within the city. Uncoloured; fine dark impression, short section of guard missing and this has caused a slight thinning of paper on verso, otherwise superb condition. A finely engraved plan of the island, with highly decorative figured cartouche and various sailing vessels in the sea area. From the German translation of the works of Montanus. These maps are usually included in Dapper?s Naukeurige beschryving der Eilanden, in de Archipel der Middelantische Zee and their peculiar characteristic is that they were joined together in the past. Copper engraving, in excellent condition. Rare. Amsterdam Amsterdam 365 565

MAGNI. Cornelio
Galeazzo Rosati, 1688. (4) ff including half-title, 135 pp, plus engraved portrait and 6 plates of Athens. Bound in old red half linen over marbled boards. Scattered foxing to margins, otherwise a very good copy, pages clean and crisp. Extremely rare first edition of this account of Athens by the Italian adventurer Cornelio Magni, one of very few accounts of that city to appear in the early modern era and one of even fewer to give accurate, up to date eyewitness illustrations of its monuments. ¿After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the Turkish conquest of Greece a few years later, Athens, and the Acropolis in particular, became virtually inaccessible to foreigners. For inspiration and examples from the classical past, the architects of the Renaissance thus relied on Roman ruins, which, though regarded as mere imitations of the Greek originals, were readily visible throughout Europe¿ (Middleton, ¿The Early Exploration of Greece¿). Until the dawn of the 18th century, ¿classical Greek architecture was understood almost entirely on the basis of the writings of the first-century B. C. Roman architect Vitruvius¿it remained no more than a literary trope, for there was no real knowledge of the architecture of Greece.¿ Cornelio Magni was a member of a landmark expedition to Greece in 1674 led by the French ambassador Nointel. The present work deals specifically with the expedition¿s time in Athens and the surrounding area (including Marathon and several isolated monasteries). He includes detailed descriptions of each monument he encounters ¿ some of which, like the Temple of … [Click Below for Full Description]
