Stewart, James, Sir, 1635-1713
[Edinburgh] : London, printed and re-printed in Edinburgh: by John Reid, 1688. First Edinburgh Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 39 pp. Signatures: A-E4, COMPLETE. Edges untrimmed (somewhat browned). Unobtrusive blindstamp on first and last leaves. Bound in recent quarter calf antique (Trevor Lloyd) THE REPEAL OF THE PENAL LAWS AND TEST ACTS DURING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION. Whereas William of Orange supported repealing the Penal Laws, but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts, his predecessor James sought to repeal the Penal Laws AND the Test Acts, thereby allowing Catholics the right to hold public office. This is the rare first Edinburgh edition; ESTC lists only BL and NLS in the United Kingdom, and Huntington and Univ. of Illinois in the United States. James Stewart (1635-1713) was one of the leading Scottish radicals in the revolutionary movement. He was offered a pardon by James II, in return for which he sought to persuade his colleagues to return from exile in Holland. In the present pamphlet Stewart replies to a letter written by Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) describing William's position on the repeal of the Penal Laws, the repeal of the Test Acts, and of religious toleration ("Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, pensioner of Holland, to Mr. James Stewart, advocate"). "Fagel's letter provoked numerous replies and defences, and clearly established the international framework for the debate on toleration. The radical exiles in Holland, who were divided among themselves on the issue of support for, or opposition to, James' toleration policy, were placed directly in the mi … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCOTT (Robert)
[London]: distributed by Mr. William Nott, Mr. Holford, Mr Willis, Mr. Fox, Mr Lownds, Mr. Wilkinson, Mr. Rich. Chiswell, Mr Peter Parker, Mr. Turner, Mr. Benj. Shirly, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Adiel Mill, [1688]. 4to, [4], 144, 135-175, [1]pp., without the final blank leaf, browned, red half morocco, spine lettered in gilt. Seventeenth-century book auction catalogues are extremely rare and are seldom found in commerce. Robert Scott was a successful bookseller and publisher, specialising in importing scholarly works in Latin from the Continent. The sale in 1688 was organised by his former apprentice Benjamin Walford and was made up of a large part of his stock. Scott counted Samuel Pepys and Robert Hooke among his customers. Mr. Adiel Mill, mentioned in the imprint as a distributor, was, as well, the publisher, having just purchased the business from Robert Scott. Mills lost the business in 1690, thereby ruining Scott for being unable to pay his purchase debt. "The catalogue extends to no less than 176pp., comprising 7040 lots, which would represent some 25,000 volumes, an enormous quantity for a bookseller of that period to amass for the purpose of retailing. The contents are classified into Latin Theology, Ecclesiastical and Ritualistic Books of the Roman-Catholic Church, Juridical, Miscellaneous, Medical and Philosophical, Mathematical, French, Italian, and Spanish, English Theology and Miscellanies, Books of Prints, and Manuscripts."—Lawler. [Zacharias Konrad von Uffenbach, 1683-1734] to the front paste-down [engraved by Johann Ulrich Krauss of Augsburg in 1705] This exquisite and finely detailed plate depicts the inside of Uffenbach's famous library. "The library of Uffenbach, at one time mayor of Frankfurt, was one of the largest of his time, counting, according to Buzas, 40,000 titles bound in 12,000 volumes, among them 413 incunabula. Towards the end of his life he decided to dispose of it, but frustrated by the unpredictable results of book auctions, decided to take matters into his own hands, himself compiling its catalogue, and affixing to each item the price he wished to obtain for it.". Chronicon Paschale; Brunet I,1435 & 1859; Ebert 3221,21) (Details: Dark blue spine with a red letterpiece and gilt fillets; wide uncut margins, thick paper; engraved printer's device of the Typographia Regia on the title; 4 beautiful engraved headpieces, 2 large initials, 2 engravings in the text; Greek text and Latin translation juxtaposed) (Condition: Cover worn, esp. at extremities; corners bumped; paper on covers grazed at places; letterpiece on the back damaged; some gatherings slightly browning) (Note: The Chronicon Paschale was compiled between 631 and 641 by a clergyman in the time of the emperor Herakleitos. Because the compiler is very interested in establishing the date of Eastern, Du Cange called it the Chronicon Paschale. The chronology starts with Adam, and ends in 628, where the manuscript breaks off. From 602 onward the compiler was eyewitness of the important events of his days. The historical data and the use of documents, records and charters make this book one of the most important sources of Greek christian chronology. Brunet mentiones that this work was number 4 of the series Corpus historiae byzantinae scriptores. Ebert however says that this is number 21 of the series. C. du Fresne du Cange, 1610-1688, best known for his large glossary on Medieval Latin, 'Glossarium ad scriptores Mediae & Infimae Latinitatis', was one of the greatest lexicographers of France, and his work in this field still remains … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAGAILLANS, Gabriel de.
Paris: Claude Barbin, 1688. Quarto, with a large engraved folding plan of Peking; in contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands. An especially important book on 17th-century China, which Lach and van Kley have described as 'perhaps the most comprehensive and perceptive general description of China published during the second half of the century'. This was the first of several editions, and formed the basis of an English version by John Ogilby.Gabriel de Magalhaes, 1609-1677, was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary to China. The book was translated by Claude Bernou from Magalhaes' manuscript (written in Portuguese) that was sent back to Europe in 1682. Magalhaes regarded these words of Confucius... to be eminently appropriate for explaining the task of the preacher of the Christian Gospel in China' (D.E. Mungello, Curious Land: Jesuit Accommodation and the Origins of Sinology, University of Hawaii, 1989). Mungello has written at length about Magalhaes' study of Chinese language and history, and concludes that 'whereas Ricci and Trigault had conveyed only a bare sketch of the Chinese language...', Magalhaes together with Semedo greatly advanced and influenced western understanding of the Chinese language, and particula … [Click Below for Full Description]
