Leusden, Johannes
Utrecht, Meinard à Dreunen, 1688. 8vo. (24), 255, (1) pp. Contemp. calf with gilt spine; leading edges gilt. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of this Syriac textbook, including one of the earliest investigations of the Samararitan language and script. "It is the least developed among the Semitic languages, closest to Syriac, but coarser, even less sophisticated. The Samaritan population has greatly dwindled; their capital is Nablus in Palestine, but there are also some in Damascus, Cairo, Acre and other places. Their common language is Arabic" (cf. Vater/J.). The Utrecht philologian J. Leusden (1624-99) studied philosophy in his hometown, then focused on theology and the oriental languages. He was ordained as a preacher in 1649. He subsequently moved to Amsterdam, where he took instruction in Hebrew and Talmudic scholarship from various Jewish teachers, including one of Arabian descent, and thus acquired such learning that he succeeded to the Utrecht chair of Hebrew and Jewish Antiquities in 1651 (cf. Jöcher 2409). - Binding somewhat rubbed. Ownership "J. Venturi" (dated 1805) on title page. - Vater/Jülg 323. Jöcher II, 2410. Jöcher/Adelung III, 1728, 4.

William Salmon
London : Printed for, and sold by T. Dawks, T. Basset, R. Chiswell, M. Wotton, and G. Conyers, 1688-01-01. Hardcover. Good. Full leather binding. Nice English polished calf. 2nd ed. Front hinge has a small crack. Collated: [14], 776, [56] pages. Early signature of William Perry and Sam White. Page 1/2 missing Pages are generally clean and unmarked. Printed in two columns. William Salmon was a self described "Professor of Physick(s)". Salmon combined medicine with alchemy and has been politely referred to as a medical empiric, and less politely as a charlatan and quack. Needless to say, Salmon was a highly successful author of medical texts, with many of his works printed in multiple editions. (You must appreciate his entry for Elixer of Virginia Snake root (Exilir Radicis Serpentariae), p. 503. It appears many of the medicines may have been lifted from a Hogwort's potions textbook or the stores of St Mungo's Hospital. i.e. Pulvis Antipestilentialis, a powder against the plague, p. 638. Hermione Granger, eat your heart out!) "Salmon was one of the earliest and most successful writers on popular science and medicine. He had little or no scientific or medical background but nevertheless became very successful and had an impressive career as a self-styled physician. His personal library contained several thousand items, and he wrote widely on a variety of subjects. His remedies enjoyed great popularity and included "Cordial Drops," "Balsam," "Elixir of Life," and "Family Pills," all of which acquired a great reputation." - Heirs of Hippocrates 654. BOYLE, ROBERT
London: Printed by H. C. for John Taylor, 1688. FIRST EDITION, issue with cancel title. One of the last works published in Boyle's lifetime, this rare and significant title by one of the most creative and prolific scientists of the 17th century provides a good example of both the author's breadth of intellectual inquiry and his deeply held interest in theology and philosophy. The youngest of the 14 children of the earl of Cork, Boyle (1627-91) was one of the founders of the Royal Society and a most active member throughout his life. He published many significant books and treatises, did much original work in chemistry, helped to develop a celebrated vacuum pump, and propounded "Boyle's Law," which formulated the important relationship between the pressure and volume of gases. Despite having suffered a major stroke in 1670, Boyle continued to experiment and write intensively until the end of his life. His later writings, particularly those produced in the 1680s and including the present work, are often characterized in two ways: they may include forays into the world of medicine, and they also reflect a profound piety and respect for the divine. The present book is of considerable interest as a medical work. At the same time, the main essay presents the author's thoughts on the relationship between theology and the work of natural philosophers, and is often regarded as Boyle's endorsement of teleological inference (today more commonly referred to as "intelligent design"). In Fulton's words, on the medical side, "the volume is replete with allusions indicating [Boyle's] powe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plattegrond Maastricht - "Traiectum ad Mosam vulgo Maestricht"'Kopergravure uitgegeven door Frederick de Wit in 1688. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. Prijs: € 1.650,- (BTW margeregeling).

López de Cogolludo, Diego.
Madrid: Juan Garcia Infanzon, 1688. Folio (29 cm; 11.5"). [1 of 15] ff., 760 pp., [16] ff. In this account of the conquest and Spanish settlement of the Yucatan, López de Cogolludo, a Franciscan missionary and administrator originally from Alcalá de Henares, presents a sought-after account. He had access to a manuscript version of Bishop Landa's work and consulted such important printed sources as Torquemada. => He also presents his personal eye-witness accounts of events during his 30 years among the Maya (1634–65). Robert Patch says in the Encyclopedia of Latin American History & Culture (III, 458) that López de Cogolludo wrote this history in the 1650s and that it is "a major source not only for the history of Yucatán but also for the study of Maya culture." Provenance: Small booklabel: "Marchio Regaliae D.D. 1741." John Carter Brown (1797–1874) purchased this from Henry Stevens in 1845/1846. On his death to his son John Nicholas Brown (1861–1900). On his death deeded to the John Carter Brown Library. Deaccessioned 2008. Palau 141001; Sabin 14210. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of ties, front joint (inside) starting to open. Scattered foxing, including on title-page; short tear, repaired, in title; some staining in early margins and into text; without the preliminaries or the added engraved title. Doodling in many margins; ink stains from a careless quill user on several pages. John Carter Brown's stamped signature on p. 1. A less than perfect copy that yet does not "feel" maimed; a copy with a distinguished provenance to match the distinction of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Milton, John
London: Pr. by Miles Flesher for Jacob Tonson Folio (38.3 cm, 15"). [4], 343, [7] pp.; 12 plts. (lacking frontis.).. 1688 The fourth edition, adorn'd with sculptures" — that is to say,the => first illustrated appearance of Paradise Lost, as well as what Hodnett calls "the earliest serious effort to illustrate an important work of English poetry" — and the first folio edition to boot — Pforzheimer noting that this is additionally the first publication of => Dryden's lines on Milton. The => 12 dramatic copper-engraved plates, tipped in, were mostly done by Michael Burghers (or Burgess, as given here) after Sir John Baptist Medina (and apparently by at least one other, unidentified artist), with at least one done by Peter Paul Bouche after Bernard Lens. Most plates are interesting as splendidly "typical" of the period, but one, in particular, is => almost stunningly modern in spirit. Opposite the start of the first book, this shows Lucifer darkly arule in Pandemonia, and it has been widely influential indeed, there having been for example an illustration "after" it as early as 1705 in Paraguay! This is one of three variant imprints of this edition, with the publication information varying based on which publisher was selling the subscription; the grape cluster watermark is visible, and the subscribers list is present at the back of the volume. The present example is definitely a "tall" copy, though Pforzheimer wonders about this observation, saying that "copies are sometimes listed as Large Paper but from the fact that the List of Subscribers makes no such distinction this is … [Click Below for Full Description]

STALKER, John and George PARKER
Oxford: for the author, 1688. Preliminaries and some leaves a moderately thumbed, a few expert marginal repairs; yet a very good copy in early binding, hinges strengthened.. Folio, with 24 woodcut plates, early eighteenth-century full calf with raised bands. Rare and desirable: the earliest book in English on the subject of European lacquer, and the first book of chinoiserie patterns to be published in England. A Treatise on Japaning and Varnishing is both an instructive text and pattern book for the use of craftsmen who strove to imitate Far Eastern lacquer work, then becoming increasingly scarce due to trade restrictions with Japan. H. D. Molesworth, editor of the modern reprint, described this original edition as 'a work of art in its own right - as readily accepted for its literary content as for its technical information'. The 24 plates in this book are arresting early examples of chinoiserie, reflecting the ambition of seventeenth-century European craftsmen to imitate Chinese and Japanese lacquerware. Throughout the ensuing century English and Continental lacquer came to rely less on copying from pattern books (such as this example) and transformed into a synthetic tradition combining European and Oriental motifs into novel designs. It was the stated intention of the authors that the plates in this volume be detached and used for transferring patterns directly; unsurprisingly complete copies of this book are scarce and difficult to acquire and it typically is encountered worn, stained and incomplete.Aside from providing a rich and original visual repertoire, this book … [Click Below for Full Description]
