[RUSSELL, John].
D. Colclough, Freedom of speech in early Stuart England, p. 118; ESTC S115559; Sabin 70762. Rare first and only edition of a controversial Puritan satire in verse, probably written by John Russell (d. 1688), but sometimes attributed to John Rhodes, minister of Enborne, and John Robinson (1575-1625). The anti-Catholic poem criticizes Arminianism, based on the teachings of the Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609), who according to Russell was sent by the pope to trick Protestants. "In the manner of John Donne's Ignatius his Conclave, Russell describes a conclave in Hell which reveals that Arminius was sent as a missionary from Hell to establish popery by the back door while seeming to be a Protestant" (Colclough). Russell links the anti-Calvinist tendencies in England to the influence of Spain and the pope; he praises the anti-Spanish and anti-Catholic preacher Thomas Scott (d. 1626), and laments the loss of the days when England resisted Spain. With the armorial bookplate of the Lord Fairfax of Cameron. With some ink annotations on flyleaf, title-page ruled with (now faint) red ink. The first six leaves with marginal restorations, some foxing. Without the folding frontispiece, included in a small number of copies. In fair condition.

ESPINOSA, Antonio de.
Palau 82664; WorldCat (1 copy). Very rare first and only early edition of a letter written by the Spanish friar Antonio de Espinosa at Algiers, after the city had been bombed by the French navy in 1688. Espinosa worked as an administrator at the hospitals of the Trinitarian Order in the city. He describes the arrival of the French fleet on 26 June, the diplomatic actions between the French and the ruler of Algiers, and the subsequent bombing of the city. The bombing led to reciprocal trials and executions by Algiers's government against the non-native inhabitants of the city, including Espinosa. Algiers was an important base for pirates, who started attacking French ships after the city signed a peace treaty with Great Britain. The French responded with bombardments in 1683 and 1688, which led to a peace treaty in 1690. Browned and with a water stain in the head margin, otherwise in good condition.

PINTER VON DER AU, Johann Christoph.
Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. ... The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library stamp on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy.

BEDE The Venerable.
Apud Ioannem Wilhelmvm Friessem juniorem. The Venerable Bedes Opera 8 vols. in 4 Pigskin Cologne 1688Bede the Venerable Saint 673-735. Biblical scholar and Father of English History. Best known for his Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum Church History of the English People. This. a primary source for early English history owes its value to Bedes care in collecting information from those most likely to know his meticulous listing of his authorities and the separation of historical fact from hearsay and tradition. Its interest is enhanced by the vividness of his descriptions.--F. L. Cross Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church p.148. He entered the monastery at age 7 at Wearmouth and then soon thereafter Jarrow where he spent the rest of his life was ordained a deacon at 19 and made a priest in his 30th year. He was a voluminous writer including many commentaries on the scriptures translations of the scriptures into Anglo Saxon lives of the saints etc. In his autobiographical account Bede lists over thirty of his written works. Nearly all his works survive. The most important loss is that of the St. Johns gospel translation. Had it survived it would have been the earliest substantial piece of English prose. Among the most important and influential of Bedes works were those on chronology and computation. Easter had a special edge for Bede because of the divergence between the calculation of Easter which he saw as correct and that used by many Celtic churches which could in certain circumstances diverge from the Roman Easter by up to twenty-eight days. Bedes treatment of … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Browne
London: Printed by J. D. for Henry White, 1688. Good, nicely rebacked with new spine. Binding good and strong. Some signs of wear and age. Please see photos and full description. Up for sale is this extremely rare antique 1688 leather bound copy of John Browne's, "The Instrumental Navigator, or the Mariners Art made Easie in Observation and Operation. In Plain Sailing, Mercator's Sailing, and Great Circle Sailing..." The book is overall in good condition some signs of wear and age. It has been nicely rebacked with a new leather spine and new endpapers. The leather covers have some scuffing and wear with some corner wear and edge wear. The binding of the book is good and strong. The book is illustrated with a small in text diagram and a folding plate. The folding plate looks like it is incomplete and is likely missing a section. This is apparently a very rare title, I couldn't find any other example to compare it; however, the text of the book appears to be complete. There are a couple of leaves with some negative space in the text which looks it was originally reserved for some small diagrams which never made it into the book during the publishing process. The book is 112 pages long with an additional 16 unnumbered pages of tables in the rear. The pages are toned from age with some heavy tanning to the first few and last few pages. The title page is somewhat fragile with some chipping around the edges and some tears. Some of the other pages have some rattiness around the edges and some small chips and tears. The last few pages have some minor worming. Along with that the … [Click Below for Full Description]

DONADO, Giovanni Battista.
Venice: Andrea Poletti, 1688. Duodecimo (149 x 83 mm). Later, probably 19th-century vellum over pasteboards, unlettered. Two oval blindstamps on title pressed flat. Minor stains and blemishes, a few edges roughly opened, small paper restoration not affecting text at foot of B6, a very good copy. With 4 folding leaves of woodcut music at end, printed on both sides. First edition of the first published survey of "Turkish literature". Ottoman scholars had recently undertaken a massive project of re-appropriation and synthesis of earlier literatures in lands then under Ottoman rule, including Greco-Latin, Persian, and Arabic materials. The book is a survey of Ottoman studies in the fields of grammar, poetry, logic, mathematics, geometry, optics, music, medicine, herbal alchemy, chemistry, history, politics, geography, and devotion, interspersed with translations prepared by Venetian dragoman Gianrinaldo Carli (who also translated Katib Çelebi into Italian) and other apprentice dragomans. It concludes with an exhortation for additional translations of books from Turkish, Persian, and Arabic. The nominal author, Giovanni Battista Donà, had been the Venetian bailo (resident consul) at Istanbul from 1680 to 1684, but the book is the fruit of an extensive collection and translation project undertaken by a group of young apprentice dragomans working under Donà in the Venetian embassy in Istanbul. The German philosopher Leibniz, passing through Venice in 1690, remarked that the Della letteratura was the only "new" title he had discovered there. The book is rare in commerce. London : Robert Morden & Thomas Cockerill, Robert Morden (d. 1703) was one of the most innovative of the English mapmakers and publishers in the third quarter of the seventeenth century although, as with many of his colleagues and rivals, he struggled to survive, writing in the dedication to this volume, that ?Having made many considerable Improvements and Additions to my Geography in this Second Edition, I have all the reason in the world to shelter it once more under the Patronage of your Name, whose affairs abroad have not only given you a better knowledg and experience of foreign parts; but whose encouragement and bounty, next to Divine Goodness, have only contributed to Production, which otherwise with its poor Author, must have for ever lain latent under the Horizon of unknowing Obscurity, and irresistible Poverty.? It is clear from the excuses that Morden made for this second edition, that the First Edition was not well received, and this motivated him to make considerable improvements; many of the existing plates … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stewart, James, Sir, 1635-1713
by John Reid, 1688. First Edinburgh Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. 39 pp. Signatures: A-E4, COMPLETE. Edges untrimmed (somewhat browned). Unobtrusive blindstamp on first and last leaves. Bound in recent quarter calf antique (Trevor Lloyd). Very good. ¶ THE REPEAL OF THE PENAL LAWS AND TEST ACTS DURING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION. Whereas William of Orange supported repealing the Penal Laws, but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts, his predecessor James sought to repeal the Penal Laws AND the Test Acts, thereby allowing Catholics the right to hold public office. This is the rare first Edinburgh edition; ESTC lists only BL and NLS in the United Kingdom, and Huntington and Univ. of Illinois in the United States. ¶ James Stewart (1635-1713) was one of the leading Scottish radicals in the revolutionary movement. He was offered a pardon by James II, in return for which he sought to persuade his colleagues to return from exile in Holland. In the present pamphlet Stewart replies to a letter written by Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) describing William's position on the repeal of the Penal Laws, the repeal of the Test Acts, and of religious toleration ("Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, pensioner of Holland, to Mr. James Stewart, advocate"). ¶ "Fagel's letter provoked numerous replies and defences, and clearly established the international framework for the debate on toleration. The radical exiles in Holland, who were divided among themselves on the issue of support for, or opposition to, James' toleration policy, were placed directly in the midst of a propaganda and power struggle between James II an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kopergravure vervaardigd door Romeijn de Hooghe. Afm.  43,5 x 53,5 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Erculeo was "an Italian writer on music, composer, teacher and singer. He studied music at the Collegio Germanico, Rome. By 1638 he was a soprano in the chapel at the court of Duke Franceso I d'Este at Modena. Later he also taught singing and Pacchioni was one of his pupils... His four books of the 1680s derive primarily from his work as a singing teacher, and the last three (of which the "Cantus Omnis Ecclesiasticus" was one) are specially interesting for the light they throw on the performance of Gregorian chant of the period."
