Jacques-Bénigne BOSSUET
Chez la veuve de Sebastien Marbre-Cramoisy. Edition originale.

PINTER VON DER AU, Johann Christoph.
, . . Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. ... The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library stamp on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy.

ERASME - [RICHARD (Jean)]
Cf. A. Stegmann, 'La réhabilitation de l’orthodoxie d’Erasme par Jean Richard' in "Colloquia Erasmiana Turonensia", Tours, 1969, II, 869-875. Vélin légèrement grisé. Bossuet, Jacques-Bénigne
Paris: Chez la veuve de Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy. Good with no dust jacket. 1688. First Edition. Hardcover. This is the rare first edition, two leather bound volumes, complete, from the important Mendham Collection of what is perhaps the most important work of one of the greatest Catholic orators and theologians, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet. It dates back to 1688 and is bound in full calf leather with several engraved initials and head or tail pieces. The set is complete, two volumes, each volume measuring 6 ¼? by 4? [16 lvs.] , 406 pp., [15 lvs] , [3] 524 [19 lvs] in fair to good antiquarian condition. BIndings are holding but weakening; boards show wear, spines chipped, pages unmarked except for title pages with old monastic inscriptions (from whom Mendham purchased them?) and Law LIbrary bookplates. This book is quite rare: Worldcat (OCLC) lists only 6 copies in this 12mo format worldwide; and 41 copies in a quarto format. It has an important provenance as well, it comes from the great Law Society of England and Wales Library, which sold off a portion of its collection which had been donated by the Church scholar and clergyman Joseph Mendham; these two first editions comprised an integral part of the Mendham Collection. ?In 1688, his great Histoire des variations des Églises protestantes ("History of the Variations of the Protestant Churches"), perhaps the most brilliant of all his works, appeared. Few writers could have made the Justification controversy interesting or even intelligible. His argument is simple enough. Without rules, an organized society cannot hold together … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zij beslo … [Click Below for Full Description]

COWLEY, ABRAHAM
London: J. M. for Henry Herringman; Mary Clark for Charles Harper, 1688; 1689. FIRST EDITION of Part III. From a distinguished collection, in pleasing condition, and in a contemporaneous binding, this volume contains the works of Abraham Cowley, one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley (1616-67) was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15; and he went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. Cowley was a staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen, Henrietta Maria, where he helped to encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters, including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point, Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death, Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey (noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England"), but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument refers to him as "the English Virgil," and Perkin asserts that his "fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. The first part here contains the poet's best-known mature works, while the second is composed of his early efforts, and the thi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition is Very Good; Very light wear to covers, professionally rebacked, previous owner's names (Catherine and John Leakey) and Leakey and Kiddell birth and marriage records (1771-1794) on front and rear endpapers, poetry signed H.G.K. on last page of contents and name Henry Grove Kiddell (1792-1833) on first page of text, pages are very lightly toned with no foxing or staining, binding is tight, first leaf is a blank endpaper with family notes from the 1700s, then there are 2 short stubs where endpapers or pages have been removed, then the frontis and title pages both of which are mounted on short white stubs. the frontis is mounted on a blank which may or may not be original, I can see by holding it up to the light that the frontis has text printed on verso, and it appears to be ads for books by John Marshall at the Bible, London. So it is probably early 18th c. . So it is clearly not the original frontis - this one is a woodcut, the Folger copy has an engraved frontis. Bunyan RGR
