Mahomet
Randal Taylor, London, 1688. We offer here a sound early copy of the Koran, freshly rebound in full calf. The volume has four raised bands and is titled in gilt on leather title-label with gilt rules, while the headbands are hand-sewn. This modern binding is not elaborate, but it is strong, plain and workmanlike making the book ideal as a reference copy. The volume comprises title-page, 16 pages of essays, 18 pages on 'The Life of Mahomet' and 511 pages of the Alcoran itself. The top edge of the page block is darkened and has a water stain near the spine which has absorbed to some extent into the book. This very old area of damp, long since dried out, has faintly stained a portion of the text extending to about an inch-and-a-half in a triangular shape fanning out from the centre of the pages. In addition to this, there is slight foxing and darkening of some pages in places, while others are slightly creased. There is a small contempory inked ownership inscription at top of title-page and two smudged ink words on the top of last blank end page. Otherwise the text is in remarkably clean and clear condition for its age, while the volume is now very sound and quite smart in its new binding. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mulder, Joseph
First edition. The map was engraved to illustrate a rare work made for the beatification of Saint Alfonso de Mogrovejo (1538 - 1606) by Francisco Echave y Assu, La estrella de Lima  convertida en sol sobre sus tres coronas el B. Toribio Alfonso Mogrobexo. However, only a few copies of the plan appear to have been printed as the plan is almost always lacking on copies of the book. By the end of the 17th Century, Lima was an important city, both as the Capital of the Viceroyalty that controlled most of Spanish South America, and as a regional trading centre. Mulder's spectacular delineation of Lima surrounded by coats-of-arms, portraits of Saints, and animals, is the first engraved plan of Lima. It "is the first engraved plan of Lima", cited by Winsor. "This rare volume was unknown to Antonio," states Sabin who did not give the location of a copy and whose collation mentions neither the engraved portrait nor the plan." (Nebenzahl). In fact, according to Medina, only copy is known to have the map. Sabin, 21765 (for the book, not mentioning the map).

BRADLEY, Richard.
Cat. bibl. Natura Artis Magistra 1323 (erroneously counting 31 plates); STCN (5 copies); cf. Bradley III, p. 116 (first English ed.); not in Nissen, BBI & ZBI; for the author: DSB II, p. 390. First and only edition of the Dutch translation of a philosophical overview of nature by Richard Bradley (1688-1732), examining minerals, flora and fauna, in an attempt to demonstrate their practical applications, particularly in agriculture. It is therefore an early example of the conceptualization of the productive and profitable aspects of the natural world. It also includes a description of infertile lands in England with suggestions for improvements, a description of gardens in Great Britain with improvements for the growing of fruit trees, and a chapter on the maintaining of grapevines. It was first published in English in 1721 as A philosophical account of the works of nature. The present edition is translated from the second English edition of 1739, which adds an appendix on fleas and lice, Flemish agriculture and some suggestions for speeding up the growing process of several crops."Bradley was a prolific science writer, ... His style was clear and readable, and his reputation immense; indeed, his publications did much to encourage a scientific approach to gardening and husbandry" (DSB).Minor dampstain on the bottom of the inner margins of the first 15 leaves and some leaves slightly browned. Spine a bit soiled. Very good copy.

Coronelli, Vincenzo Maria
published in Venice. 1688. - 42.7 x 29.3 cm, copper engraving. One of the EXTREMELY RARE GLOBE GORES depicting different parts of the world. Map shows the Western Coast line of South America, and a small vignette of native boats. This exceptional series of globe gores was originally engraved for a 110 cm. diameter terrestrial globe in 1688 - as here. They were subsequently reissued in individual sheet format in Coronelli's "Libro dei globi" and in his World Atlas Isolario in the 1690s. "Coronelli seems to have sought to omit nothing that might be of interest to geographers, navigators and explorers. There are an unusual number of legends, all explanatory and informative, but which never crowd the space available. Many of the vignettes of ships and fishing scenes throughout the world are worthy of separate reproduction. Coronelli makes comments on all the most important explorations and discoveries and undoubtedly had access to the findings of the French Academy of Sciences" [Shirley]. REFERENCE: R. PINTER VON DER AU, Johann Christoph.
Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. ... The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy.

ROUSSEAU, Jean Jacques and Pierre Joseph REDOUTÉ.
Cat. Redoutéana 37 note; Stafleu & Cowan 9688; cf. Dunthorne 252; Nissen, BBI 1688. Rare second edition, printed from the original plates of the 1805 first edition, of Redouté's beautifully illustrated publication of letters on botany by the great philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), written in the years 1771 to 1773 and apparently first published in 1782. The plates show flowers, fruits, bulbs, leaves, etc. of flowering plants and trees, some showing whole plants and others showing details, sometimes cut away to reveal anatomical details. The book serves largely as a vehicle to display the botanical art of Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) who executed all the paintings or watercolour drawings. They were stipple-engraved and (except for that used as a title-vignette) printed in colour à la poupée and finished by hand. Although Rousseau's letters had been published earlier, they first appeared with Redouté's illustrations in 1805, in both a folio and a quarto issue, the latter reissued in 1821. The present is a new edition, beautifully printed by Alexandre Baudouin and his brother on heavy wove paper. The text leaves are slightly foxed throughout, but the plates show only occasional light foxing. Otherwise in very good condition, with only a browned patch in the gutter margin of one plate, not approaching the image. Some plate numbers trimmed off. Binding scuffed but structurally very good. A lovely display of Redouté's botanical art matched to the botanical writings of the French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau.

The bookseller's preliminary note says it was written by the leader of the French troops there, meaning Captain Pierre Desfarges.Ad 2: A Dutch Protestant political pamphlet in French in the form of a series of nine numbered fictitious dialogues between various French and foreign dignitaries, discussing current affairs, published about two years after the Nine Years' War began between France and the "Grand Alliance" lead by William of Orange, King of England and Dutch stadtholder.Ad 3: A Dutch political pamphlet in French in the form of what it calls a dialogue on current affairs in Europe. In fact it contains about a hundred short statements constructed from biblical passages, each attributed to a person or group involved in the political or military strife of the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between France and the "Grand Alliance". One sheet had a crease in the paper when it was printed, affecting a few words. With an occasional minor surface stain in the text, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are worn and slightly cracked, but the binding is otherwise very good.
