PINTER VON DER AU, Johann Christoph.
Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. ... The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy.

ROUSSEAU, Jean Jacques and Pierre Joseph REDOUTÉ.
Cat. Redoutéana 37 note; Stafleu & Cowan 9688; cf. Dunthorne 252; Nissen, BBI 1688. Rare second edition, printed from the original plates of the 1805 first edition, of Redouté's beautifully illustrated publication of letters on botany by the great philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), written in the years 1771 to 1773 and apparently first published in 1782. The plates show flowers, fruits, bulbs, leaves, etc. of flowering plants and trees, some showing whole plants and others showing details, sometimes cut away to reveal anatomical details. The book serves largely as a vehicle to display the botanical art of Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) who executed all the paintings or watercolour drawings. They were stipple-engraved and (except for that used as a title-vignette) printed in colour à la poupée and finished by hand. Although Rousseau's letters had been published earlier, they first appeared with Redouté's illustrations in 1805, in both a folio and a quarto issue, the latter reissued in 1821. The present is a new edition, beautifully printed by Alexandre Baudouin and his brother on heavy wove paper. The text leaves are slightly foxed throughout, but the plates show only occasional light foxing. Otherwise in very good condition, with only a browned patch in the gutter margin of one plate, not approaching the image. Some plate numbers trimmed off. Binding scuffed but structurally very good. A lovely display of Redouté's botanical art matched to the botanical writings of the French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau.

[DESFARGES, Pierre].
Ad 1: Barbier IV, col. 223; Cordier, Indosinica, col. 955; STCN (3 copies); ad 2: STCN (1 copy); VD17, 1:070667E (5 copies); Weller I, p. 48; ad 3: Weller II, p. 50; not in STCN. Ad 1: A Dutch pamphlet giving a French account of the Siamese revolution of 1688, a French debacle that repudiated Western influence in the Siamese Ayutthaya Kingdom (now Thailand), but also allowed the Dutch to take France's place as the kingdom's principal European trading partner. The bookseller's preliminary note says it was written by the leader of the French troops there, meaning Captain Pierre Desfarges.Ad 2: A Dutch Protestant political pamphlet in French in the form of a series of nine numbered fictitious dialogues between various French and foreign dignitaries, discussing current affairs, published about two years after the Nine Years' War began between France and the "Grand Alliance" lead by William of Orange, King of England and Dutch stadtholder.Ad 3: A Dutch political pamphlet in French in the form of what it calls a dialogue on current affairs in Europe. In fact it contains about a hundred short statements constructed from biblical passages, each attributed to a person or group involved in the political or military strife of the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between France and the "Grand Alliance". One sheet had a crease in the paper when it was printed, affecting a few words. With an occasional minor surface stain in the text, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are worn and slightly cracked, but the binding is otherwise very good.

Plattegrond Maastricht - ?Traiectum ad Mosam vulgo Maestricht??Kopergravure uitgegeven door Frederick de Wit in 1688. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. Prijs: ?1.650,- (BTW margeregeling).

ESPINOSA, Antonio de.
Palau 82664; WorldCat (1 copy). Very rare first and only early edition of a letter written by the Spanish friar Antonio de Espinosa at Algiers, after the city had been bombed by the French navy in 1688. Espinosa worked as an administrator at the hospitals of the Trinitarian Order in the city. He describes the arrival of the French fleet on 26 June, the diplomatic actions between the French and the ruler of Algiers, and the subsequent bombing of the city. The bombing led to reciprocal trials and executions by Algiers's government against the non-native inhabitants of the city, including Espinosa. Algiers was an important base for pirates, who started attacking French ships after the city signed a peace treaty with Great Britain. The French responded with bombardments in 1683 and 1688, which led to a peace treaty in 1690. Browned and with a water stain in the head margin, otherwise in good condition.
