La VERGNE de TRESSAN (Pierre de).
Chez Antoine Dezallier, Paris, 1688. [4], 164 pp, woodcut device on title page; woodcut head piece and initial with half title page: 'Voyage de la terre sainte'. contemporary full calf, edges rubbed, lacking map of the Holy Land, paper slightly browned, some worming & cuts on margins not affecting text. Pierre de la Vergne (1618-1684), First and only edition. Born into a Huguenot family of Languedoc, Pierre de La Vergne (1618-1684) converted to Catholicism at the age of twenty. To divert him from monastic life, to which he was inclined, he was allowed to travel to the Holy Land. On his return, he was given assignments for the conversion of the Huguenots in the south of France. He was the spiritual guide of the Princess of Conti and Madame de Grignan. The Marquise de Sevigne judged him, but he refused to take charge of her soul. His travelogue contains descriptions of Malta, Lebanon, Tripoli, Mount Carmel, Jerusalem, and the various Palestinian sites, as well as Cyprus. He does not write much about the sacred sites of the area, as the political insecurity and the various power struggles between Christians and Ottoman’s deemed those visits perilous. Even his return trip by sea was dangerous. Pilgrims at the time (under Louis XIV) had to obtain special permits from their Bishops or the lieutenant General of his area, to go the Holy Land. For fear of an exodus of the Protestants camouflaged as a pilgrimage. (Bourgeois et André, Les Sources de l' histoire de France. XVIIe siècle I, n° 525) Bibliographical note: Barbier IV, 234; Hage Chahine 4855; Rohricht p. 261.Tobler 104; . no … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAMES, Thomas
Printed for Josh. Phillips, London, 1688. [30], 560pp. Without initial imprimatur leaf. Recent black cloth, lettered in gilt. Very minor wear to extremities. Recent endpapers, recent book-label and ink shelf-marks of the 'Bath Reference Library' to FFEP, short strip of clear tape to head of title, ink ownership inscription to title; 'Edwd. Tottenham 1832 / London', slight loss to margin of B2, minor marginal paper flaws to Y5-6, foxed. Thomas James (1572/3-1629), Bodley's librarian at Oxford, and anti-Catholic religious controversialist. A treatise, first printed in 1611, on the perceived corruption of the scriptural sources of Christianity by the Catholic Church with, unsurprisingly given James' position at Oxford, remarkably detailed bibliographical notes on Christian manuscripts and printed books. Edward Tottenham (1810-1853), Irish clergyman, graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, who served successively as minister for Kensington Chapel, Bath, Curate of Laura Chapel, Bath, and, from 1841, as a Prebendary of Wells. Tottenham devoted himself to the scholarly study of the Roman Catholic Church and liturgy, which he perceived to be corrupted; his book collection, purchased by the Bath Reference Library upon his death, well reflected this sentiment. [LEMENE, Francesco].
B. Forment, "Moonlight on Endymion: in search of 'Arcadian opera,' 1688-1721", in: Journal of seventeenth-century music XIV(2008), pp. 1-36, the present ed. at p. 16; ICCU (2 copies); KVK (3 copies, including the same 2). Very rare libretto printed for distribution to the audience at one of the earliest performances of the 1692 Arcadian opera Endimione, based on the classical Greek myth of Endymion and written in Italian verse by Francesco Lemene (1634-1704). It includes extensive additions to the text that probably appear here for the first time, making it an essential source for any study of the myth's history and development. It may also be the only edition to name the creators of stage sets for the opera, designed for the 1699 Turin production by Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1657-1743), a well-known architect, designer and painter in service of the Duke of Parma, and executed by Pietro Gio[v]anni Abbati (1683-1745), who had been his apprentice and was active in Parma and Turin. Endymion as revived in the 1690s has been called "a paradigm of the earliest operatic endeavors of the Arcadian Academy" (Forment). The Accademia degli Arcadi was a utopian reaction against the Baroque, attempting to turn Italian culture back to its glorious Renaissance roots. Directly or indirectly it probably inspired many of the later renditions of the Endymion story, including Bach's 1713 Hunt Cantata and Keats's 1818 poem that begins, "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever".Owner's inscription. With a faint water stain at the foot in the first 2 quires, minor foxing, small defects in the paper of … [Click Below for Full Description]
