Vincenzo Maria Coronelli
Venice, 1688. This is a remarkable large folio map by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli entitled America Settentrionale Colle Nuove Scoperte Sin All Anno 1688. It was published in the atlas Atlante Veneto in Venice in 1688. It is "one of the most influential maps of North America published in the late seventeenth century." (Atlante veneto)The map is based on Sanson's 1669 map with the addition of mountain ranged and names of places. "It provided a major leap in the cartography of the day. The whole is aesthetically delightful, providing a perfect balance between the provision of scientific accuracy and beauty." (Burden 643) The map was originally printed on two separate sheets and has now been carefully joined. The map features a figural cartouche featuring scenes of gods blessing the era of European expansion and finding themselves in the New World. It was dedicated to Bishop F. Antonio Marsily, Archdeacon of the Cathedral of Bologna. It also features vignettes of Native American life (or what the Europeans believed of their life and culture) as well as real and imagined beasts. There is a scene of human sacrifice near Hudson's bay, a large alligator in Louisiana, and others of Native Americans drying fish and burning wood.Coronelli was a Venetian scholar and Minorite Friar. He became one of the most celebrated map and globe makers of his era. One of his most important works were the Marly Globes created for Louis XIV - the largest and most magnificent globes ever produced. Coronelli also founded the first geographical society: Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He published two … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Milton
1688. Poor binding, otherwise generally good, but please see full description. For sale is this copy of Milton's Paradise Lost. This is the rare fourth edition of 1688, one of the early examples of subscription publishing and the first illustrated edition of this great poem. 'Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacon Tonson, at the Judge's Head in Chancery Lane near Fleet Street'. Large folio, 38cm x 24cm. Plate 9 missing, otherwise complete, including the portrait of Milton, and the list of subscribers at the rear. The binding is present but both boards are off; the front free endpaper is loose; but the remaining pages are holding together firmly. In need of sensitive and skilled repair and restoration. The main faults are: The portrait of Milton is chipped and carries an old repair; the title page is somewhat grubby, with one or two closed tears, and some slight damp staining. There is some slight scattered foxing here and there throughout the book; some pencilled marginal notes; a latin inscription in ink on the title; and a couple of small worm holes. Otherwise good, some finger marks and obvious signs of use, but generally bright and clean, considering its age. The book appears to have some provenance: the title pages carries the names of some previous owners. And next to the name of Viscountess Brouncker on the list of subscribers, appears a pencil note "who gave this book'. I am aware of the book's rarity and value and will consider reasonable offers. Please ask any questions you might have. I will send carefully packed, tracked and insured, and post free within the UK. Pl … [Click Below for Full Description]

This 1688 volume from the famous 'Kriegs'Helms' features 21 copper engraved maps and views including: · Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle · Constantinople city view · Portrait of Suleiman II · City of Kandla port.

Richard Blome
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331 pp Fin; index table; 2 final blanks. The maps are: Carte de la Jamaique; Ile des Barbades; Les Barmudes; Nouvelle Carte de la Caroline; Nouvelle Angleterre et Nouvel York; and Partie de L'Amerique. Contents are generally clean with the odd spot or mark. There is a repaired fold tear to Nouvelle Angleterre and a small tear at the base of p95. There are some light ink marks on p 299.

Nihonbashi (Jiangsu): Sugawara Umao Bingwei, 1688. 1688 Japanese Illustrated Woodblock Samurai Secrets of the Horse RARE 5v BajutsuA rare, 17th century set of woodblock prints of ancient Japanese bajutsu, military equestrianism. Japanese military equestrianism required proficiency in riding and mounted sword-fighting and included teachings on the care and upkeep of horses. Horses were trained to ignore sudden shocks, and press forward in the charge, veering off at the last moment to allow the rider to kick with his battering-ram-like stirrups. The stirrups allowed the rider to stand and shoot from the saddle. This edition of 'Youba Higokushuu; Secrets of the Horse' is a 13-part set of woodblock prints for Bajutsu instruction, primarily medical. It includes illustrations and instruction for Samurai weapons, tack and tool for equines and horse medicine including acupuncture for the animals, as well as horse medicine in a broad sense such as body structure. This edition was most likely used as an instructional text to teach young samurai to care for horses. 1688. MILTON, John.
London: By Miles Flesher, for Richard Bently, and Jacob Tonson, 1688. London: By Miles Flesher, for Richard Bently, and Jacob Tonson,, 1688. A Poem In Twelve Books. The Fourth Edition, Adorn'd with Sculptures. Folio (313 x 190 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked to style preserving the original red morocco label, board-edges gilt-rolled. Engraved portrait frontispiece by R. White after William Faithorne, 12 engraved plates, some signed by M. Burghers and Peter Paul Bouche, three leaves of subscribers' names at the rear. Some minor rubbing and light scratches to boards, frontispiece and title faintly darkened, ink splash to M3 and M4, closed tear from bottom of M3 not affecting text, occasional other light marks or mild dust soiling, but an attractive copy with the fair margins and a good impression to the plates, very good. First folio and first illustrated edition of Milton's epic. In contrast to the plain dress first edition in small quarto of 1667 and the two octavo editions of 1674 and 1678, this folio edition (the fourth overall) announces the acceptance of Milton as a great national poet. The frontispiece has commendatory verses by John Dryden, the poetic apologist for the Restoration and monarchy; each book is preceded by a fine engraved plate by John Baptist de Medina and others; and the list of subscribers is over 500 names long. Because of the role played in its publication by the statesman and benefactor John, Lord Somers, this is sometimes called "the Somers edition".

London: White Horse Without Temple Bar, and George Ewrey..., 1688. London: White Horse Without Temple Bar, and George Ewrey.... Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1688. Later English Edition. Soft. An early English language edition of the map of Japan from Tavernier's 'Travels'. Tavernier, at the behest of his patron Louis XIV, published 'Les Six Voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier' in 1676. Then a supplementary 'Recueil de Plusieurs Relations' (1679) , in which he was assisted by a certain La Chapelle. This contains an account of Japan, gathered from merchants and others, and one of Tongking, derived from the observations of his brother Daniel, who had shared his second voyage. Tavernier, a gem merchant, travelled only to China, but included a description of Japan in his account. This Map appears in the english version of his book - the title being "Collections of Travels through Turkey into Persia, and the East-Indies...Together with a Relation of the Kingdom of Japan and Tunkin..." . This copy is thought to be a 2nd printing of the first english edition. This rare and unusual map of Japan features a graphic illustration of the islands with pictorial depictions of mountains and forts, etc. An inset of Tunquin (North Vietnam) depicts the river system centered on Hanoi and the Gulf of Tonkin. The Sea of Korea (Coreer) and the country's tip can be seen below the inset. On stylistic grounds the map has been attributed to the engraver Herman Moll, making it one of his earliest works.
