Garcilaso de la Vega, "El Inca":
London, 1688. [8],1019,[8]pp. plus frontispiece portrait and ten plates. Folio. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked in vellum at an early date. Some scattered darkening and dust soiling, else a very nice copy, untrimmed. Garcilaso de la Vega's major work, the source from which all later writers on the subject have drawn. It consists of two parts, the first describing the origins, religion, laws, and many other details regarding the Incan empire and policies before the invasion by the Spanish. The second part describes the conquest by the Spanish. The engravings provide a vivid picture of the brutal life of the period in Peruvian life and of the conquest. This is the first English language edition, translated by Paul Rycaut, whose portrait appears as the frontispiece. Garcilaso de la Vega, "El Inca," a distinguished 16th- century mestizo Peruvian and a descendant of the Spanish poet of the same name, was born in Peru and spent his formative years there, living out his later life in Spain. Garcilaso's contemporary record of the early Spanish period in Peru is most valuable, as it is based on eyewitness testimony and personal observation. WING G217. SABIN 98760. La VERGNE de TRESSAN (Pierre de).
Chez Antoine Dezallier, Paris, 1688. [4], 164 pp, woodcut device on title page; woodcut head piece and initial with half title page: 'Voyage de la terre sainte'. contemporary full calf, edges rubbed, lacking map of the Holy Land, paper slightly browned, some worming & cuts on margins not affecting text. Pierre de la Vergne (1618-1684), First and only edition. Born into a Huguenot family of Languedoc, Pierre de La Vergne (1618-1684) converted to Catholicism at the age of twenty. To divert him from monastic life, to which he was inclined, he was allowed to travel to the Holy Land. On his return, he was given assignments for the conversion of the Huguenots in the south of France. He was the spiritual guide of the Princess of Conti and Madame de Grignan. The Marquise de Sevigne judged him, but he refused to take charge of her soul. His travelogue contains descriptions of Malta, Lebanon, Tripoli, Mount Carmel, Jerusalem, and the various Palestinian sites, as well as Cyprus. He does not write much about the sacred sites of the area, as the political insecurity and the various power struggles between Christians and Ottoman’s deemed those visits perilous. Even his return trip by sea was dangerous. Pilgrims at the time (under Louis XIV) had to obtain special permits from their Bishops or the lieutenant General of his area, to go the Holy Land. For fear of an exodus of the Protestants camouflaged as a pilgrimage. (Bourgeois et André, Les Sources de l' histoire de France. XVIIe siècle I, n° 525) Bibliographical note: Barbier IV, 234; Hage Chahine 4855; Rohricht p. 261.Tobler 104; . no … [Click Below for Full Description]
