Ad 1: A Dutch pamphlet giving a French account of the Siamese revolution of 1688, a French debacle that repudiated Western influence in the Siamese Ayutthaya Kingdom (now Thailand), but also allowed the Dutch to take France's place as the kingdom's principal European trading partner. The bookseller's preliminary note says it was written by the leader of the French troops there, meaning Captain Pierre Desfarges.Ad 2: A Dutch Protestant political pamphlet in French in the form of a series of nine numbered fictitious dialogues between various French and foreign dignitaries, discussing current affairs, published about two years after the Nine Years' War began between France and the "Grand Alliance" lead by William of Orange, King of England and Dutch stadtholder.Ad 3: A Dutch political pamphlet in French in the form of what it calls a dialogue on current affairs in Europe. In fact it contains about a hundred short statements constructed from biblical passages, each attributed to a person or group involved in the political or military strife of the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between France and the "Grand Alliance". One sheet had a crease in the paper when it was printed, affecting a few words. With an occasional minor surface stain in the text, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are worn and slightly cracked, but the binding is otherwise very good.

EXQUEMELIN, Alexandre Olivier]
Paris: Jacques Le Febure, 1688 - 2 volumes bound in one, small octavo. (157 × 97 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep trade binding, raised bands to the spine, double fillet panel containing floral device gilt to the compartments. Light browning throughout, occasional marginal stains, mild damp-staining to the last few leaves, worming to the upper portion of one of the maps, costing three letters, professionally repaired with letters provided in MS facsimile, slightly rubbed, joints, head- and tail-cap skilfully restored, new label. Engraved general title, 3 folding maps, and 4 illustrations to the text, 3 of them full-page. Second French edition. Sabin describes the first French edition, published two years previously to this, as "of extreme rarity". Translated by Frontignières, who utilized the Spanish edition of 1681 but made substantial revisions and additions, possibly in consultation with Exquemelin's manuscript. A highly popular and influential account of pirates in the Caribbean, Hill says of Exquemelin that he was "the inspiration for a vast number of novels, plays, and imaginary voyages." A Huguenot native to Honfleur, Exquemelin left France in 1666 as an indentured servant bound for the Antilles. On Tortuga, he was sold to a nefarious government officer, and later resold to a doctor who taught him some of the skills of a barber-surgeon, offered Exquemelin his freedom for a price, and gave him a few surgical tools. By the end of the 1660's, Exquemelin became a flibustier, or privateer. He probably served with Jean-David Nau l'Olonnais, and participated in the raid of M … [Click Below for Full Description]

1688. Antique print, titled: 'Majorinus Numida' - Majorinus was a bishop of Carthage in dispute with Ceacilianus. He favored the so-called Donatist sect. Het died ca. 329 AD. The background to the controversy was the wave of persecutions of Christians by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. At that time some Church leaders - unwilling to endure torture or death and become martyrs - had been ready to take such acts as worshipping the gods of the old pantheon, considered idols by Christians, or surrendering church books and property to the imperial authorities. Such people became known as “traditors” ("surrenderers"). One of these "traditors", named Caecilian, had returned to the fold of the Church once the persecutions ended, and was consecrated Bishop of Carthage and Primate of North Africa. Those of the faithful who refused to accept the authority of such a spiritual leader raised Majorinus as a rival bishop; however, Majorinus died shortly after being consecrated, and it fell to Donatus to take his place and continue the struggle. Engraving / etching. on A verge type of hand-laid paper paper. Dresden, Mathesius, 1688 - Nebehay-W. 729, 1. [Click Below for Full Description]

Esempl. molto bello.. Manca a Dorbon, Bibl. Magica Casanatense e Racc. Verginelli-Rota. Olschki, Choix, IX, 13302. Caillet, III, 10165. Thorndike, VIII, 476. Hollstein, IX, 46-55..

Garcilaso de la Vega, "El Inca"
London: Printed by Miles Flesher, for Richard Tonson, within Gray's-Inn-Gate, 1688. [8],1019 [i.e. 1015],[8]pp., without pages numbered 23- 26, as issued; plus frontispiece portrait and ten plates. Titlepage printed in red and black. Folio. Nineteenth century pigskin over boards, rebacked in matching style, spine gilt. Portrait backed, repairing some closed tears. Scattered foxing, tanning, and soiling in text. A good, solid copy. Garcilaso de la Vega's major work, the source from which all later writers on the subject have drawn. It consists of two parts, the first describing the origins, religion, laws, and many other details regarding the Incan empire and policies before the invasion by the Spanish. The second part describes the conquest by the Spanish. The engravings provide a vivid picture of the brutal life of the period in Peruvian life and of the conquest. Garcilaso de la Vega, "El Inca," a distinguished 16th- century mestizo Peruvian and a descendant of the Spanish poet of the same name, was born in Peru and spent his formative years there, living out his later life in Spain. Garcilaso's contemporary record of the early Spanish period in Peru is most valuable, as it is based on eyewitness testimony and personal observation. This is the first English language edition, translated by Paul Rycaut, whose portrait appears as the frontispiece. Several variants of this edition were all printed in 1688 by Miles Flesher, each with a different publisher imprint. WING G214. ESTC R34862. SABIN 98760. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 688/104. PALAU 354799.
