Milton, John
London: Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-lane near Fleet-street, 1688. First illustrated edition of Milton's masterpiece. Folio, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, with portrait frontispiece, illustrated throughout. In very good condition with some toning to the text, contemporary name. A very nice example. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece... Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful." By 1688, when England was on the verge of the Whig revolution, Milton's reputation had revived considerably. He was commended for his republicanism as well as his record as a defender of liberty. His supporters believed that his greatest poetic achievement merited this handsome, monumental edition. One of the earliest examples of subscription publishing, financed by Lord Somers, the fourth edition of Paradise Lost was the first to be printed in folio format … [Click Below for Full Description]

TACHARD, Guy
1688 F First English Edition J. Robinson London. A very good copy in co0ntemporary dark brown calf, rebacked early 20th century retaining portions of the original spine, LACKING TITLE (Supplied in facsimnile) and apparently lacking plates 20, 21, 22. There are 27 engraved maps and plates, 17 of which are folding, plate 13 strengthened with clear tape on fold. In general otherwise a clean tight example of the rare English edition of Tachard's important voyage. Tachard was sent in 1685 with five other Jesuits under Superior Jean de Fontaney, on a first French embassy to Siam led by Chevalier de Chaumont and Franois- Timolon de Choisy, and accompanied by Claude de Forbin. The objective of the Jesuits was to complete a scientific expedition to the Indies and China.[3] Enticed by the Greek Constantine Phaulkon, he returned to France to suggest an alliance with the king of Siam Narai to Louis XIV. The five other Jesuits Fathers continued to China where they arrived in February 1688: Jean de Fontaney (16431710), Joachim Bouvet (16561730), Jean- Franois Gerbillon (16541707), Louis Le Comte (16551728) and Claude de Visdelou (16561737).[4] The two ships of the embassy returned to France with a Siamese embassy on board, led by the Siamese ambassador Kosa Pan,[5] who was bringing a proposal for an eternal alliance between France and Siam. The embassy stayed in France from June 1686 to March 1687.

CHAMBRUN Jacques Pineton de
- Chez Henry Van Bulderen, A La Haye 1688, In-12 (9,5x16cm), (8) 256pp., relié. - Edition.

The work was originally intended for royal dedication but was not ready by the time of Charles's execution in January 1649; on 19 March parliament issued a warrant to seize all copies of the book and Ross was summoned before a parliamentary committee, though the translation was eventually published several weeks later, with a prefatory address entitled "The Translator to the Christian Reader" together with Ross's caveat; there is also a 13-page "Life of Mahomet". The bookseller's preliminary note says it was written by the leader of the French troops there, meaning Captain Pierre Desfarges.Ad 2: A Dutch Protestant political pamphlet in French in the form of a series of nine numbered fictitious dialogues between various French and foreign dignitaries, discussing current affairs, published about two years after the Nine Years' War began between France and the "Grand Alliance" lead by William of Orange, King of England and Dutch stadtholder.Ad 3: A Dutch political pamphlet in French in the form of what it calls a dialogue on current affairs in Europe. In fact it contains about a hundred short statements constructed from biblical passages, each attributed to a person or group involved in the political or military strife of the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between France and the "Grand Alliance". One sheet had a crease in the paper when it was printed, affecting a few words. With an occasional minor surface stain in the text, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are worn and slightly cracked, but the binding is otherwise very good.

EXQUEMELIN, Alexandre Olivier]
Paris: Jacques Le Febure, 1688 - 2 volumes bound in one, small octavo. (157 × 97 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep trade binding, raised bands to the spine, double fillet panel containing floral device gilt to the compartments. Light browning throughout, occasional marginal stains, mild damp-staining to the last few leaves, worming to the upper portion of one of the maps, costing three letters, professionally repaired with letters provided in MS facsimile, slightly rubbed, joints, head- and tail-cap skilfully restored, new label. Engraved general title, 3 folding maps, and 4 illustrations to the text, 3 of them full-page. Second French edition. Sabin describes the first French edition, published two years previously to this, as "of extreme rarity". Translated by Frontignières, who utilized the Spanish edition of 1681 but made substantial revisions and additions, possibly in consultation with Exquemelin's manuscript. A highly popular and influential account of pirates in the Caribbean, Hill says of Exquemelin that he was "the inspiration for a vast number of novels, plays, and imaginary voyages." A Huguenot native to Honfleur, Exquemelin left France in 1666 as an indentured servant bound for the Antilles. On Tortuga, he was sold to a nefarious government officer, and later resold to a doctor who taught him some of the skills of a barber-surgeon, offered Exquemelin his freedom for a price, and gave him a few surgical tools. By the end of the 1660's, Exquemelin became a flibustier, or privateer. He probably served with Jean-David Nau l'Olonnais, and participated in the raid of M … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, titled: 'Majorinus Numida' - Majorinus was a bishop of Carthage in dispute with Ceacilianus. He favored the so-called Donatist sect. Het died ca. 329 AD. The background to the controversy was the wave of persecutions of Christians by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. At that time some Church leaders - unwilling to endure torture or death and become martyrs - had been ready to take such acts as worshipping the gods of the old pantheon, considered idols by Christians, or surrendering church books and property to the imperial authorities. Such people became known as “traditors” ("surrenderers"). One of these "traditors", named Caecilian, had returned to the fold of the Church once the persecutions ended, and was consecrated Bishop of Carthage and Primate of North Africa. Those of the faithful who refused to accept the authority of such a spiritual leader raised Majorinus as a rival bishop; however, Majorinus died shortly after being consecrated, and it fell to Donatus to take his place and continue the struggle. Engraving / etching. on A verge type of hand-laid paper paper. Dresden, Mathesius, 1688 - Nebehay-W. 729, 1. [Click Below for Full Description]
