(LA VARENNE)
chez Jacques Canier, 1688. In-24 gr. (mm. 147x78), p. pelle coeva, dorso a cordoni (picc. restauri) con decoraz. e tit. oro, pp. 460 (mal numer. 458),(8).

NEWTON, Isaac]. [PFAUTZ, Christoph]
Grossius and J.F. Gleditsch, Leipzig, 1688. First edition of the important Acta Eruditorum review of the Principia. There were four reviews of the Principia, of which this is chronologically the third. It is "the most detailed and serious of the four reviews. It was comprehensive enough to provide many people in Europe without access to the Principia itself with a fairly full account of its contents" (Gjertsen, Newton Handbook, p. 472). The first review appeared in issue no. 186 of the Philosophical Transactions, January - March, 1687: "not only did [Edmund] Halley finance, edit, publish and distribute Principia, he also reviewed it, anonymously, in P[hilosophical] T[ransactions]. It is little more than a summary interspersed with expressions of praise" (ibid.). The second appeared in the issue of Bibliothèque Universelle of March 1688, consisting "of nothing more than the headings of the sections of Books I and II translated into French. There is also a summary of Book III, and an introductory paragraph ." (ibid.). The final review was that in the Journal des Sçavans, August, 1688, in which "Newton's hypothesis was dismissed as arbitrary, unproven and belonging to geometry rather than mechanics" (ibid.). The Acta review is anonymous, but "new evidence has recently enabled the author of this book review to be identified as Christoph Pfautz (1645-1711), a professor of mathematics at the University of Leipzig . From the correspondence of [Otto] Mencke, the editor of the Acta, and from notes of his grandson, we may learn that Pfautz and Mencke were closely associated in many w … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINTER VON DER AU, Johann Christoph.
Dejager 136; Nissen, ZBI 3185 (calls for 24 plates); VD17 3:311219G (7 copies, incl. 2 incomplete). Second, enlarged and corrected edition of a "very elaborate compilation of the available literature on horsemanship, Pinter von der Au referred to his sources without restraint, from Xenophon and Vegetius, via Rusio and Ruellius to Carraciolo and Zechendorff. Quotations from Cicero and Caesar, Strabo, Plinius and Varro testify to his classical education. With regards to the methods for dressage Pinter leans heavily on Antoine Pluvinel and he is much less inclined to use cruel methods and devices than other stable and riding masters of the 17th century. ... The work is divided into three main parts: (1) on horses in general, horse breeding, care and treatment of horses, livery stable and stud farm, (2) on riding, training and dressage, including bits and reins, and (3) on horse medicine" (Dejager). With library on frontispiece. Binding slightly rubbed and some small restorations to the spine. Some minor thumbing in the margins of the frontispiece, a couple spots on the plates, large tear in the first plate and some false folds; a good copy.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Milton, John
Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-lane near Fleet-street, London. First illustrated edition of Milton's masterpiece. Folio, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, with portrait frontispiece, illustrated throughout. In very good condition with some toning to the text. A very nice example. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece. Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful." By 1688, when England was on the verge of the Whig revolution, Milton's reputation had revived considerably. He was commended for his republicanism as well as his record as a defender of liberty. His supporters believed that his greatest poetic achievement merited this handsome, monumental edition. One of the earliest examples of subscription publishing, financed by Lord Somers, the fourth edition of Paradise Lost was the first to be printed in folio format and is the first illustrat … [Click Below for Full Description]

It is "the first example in French of a learned work placed within the reach of an educated but non specialized public." - DSB, V, 59. A popular account of the systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe in dialogue form, the treatise "awakened general interest in astronomy and popularized the scientific system of inquiry; it also emphasized the small space occupied by man and this planet relatively to the rest of the universe. The work was ridiculed by Voltaire, though it suggested his MICROMEGAS." - Harvey and Haseltine (eds), The Oxford Companion to French Literature (1959), p. 278. PERESI (Giovanni Camillo):
In Ferrara Per Bernardino Pomatelli, 1688, 1688. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 171 x 104 mms., pp. [viii], 446 [447 errata, 448 blank], including half-title, later early 19th century , morocco, gilt spine, all edges gilt, a very good to fine copy with the arms of Guillaume Pavée de Vendeuvre (1752 - 1814), the French politician active in the post-Revolutionary government, in gilt in the centre of each cover. Giovanni Camillo Peresi (1628 -1696) dedicated this mock-heroic poem in ottavo rime to The young Prince, Francesco Maria de Medici. This was one of the books read by a group of friends of Lady Maria Callcott (1785 - 1842), which she described in her book Three Months Passed in the Mountains East of Rome: During the Year 1819 as having "true incidents...[which] belong to the life of Nicholas Lorenzi, commonly called Cola de Rienzie. The poet Perseio has permitted himself to introduce a little machinery adapted to the popular taste; destiny, chance, a wizard, a witch, a Fairy, and Madame Fortune." The fable itself involves a maypole, which youth in Rome in the 14th century tried to climb, with prizes for the successful attempts. The work was said to be popular with other Romantic authors.

LA BRUYERE (Jean de)]
Paris, Estienne Michallet, 1688. [Click Below for Full Description]

[LA BRUYERE, Jean de]
12mo (92 x 156 mm), [60], 53-360 p., privilege leaf [errata not called for in this issue], marginal tear (no loss) in B2 otherwise fine, contemporary calf, hinges and corners perfect but gilt on spine indistinct, small repair in upper compartment, modern title labelJean La Bruyère's only book has long been recognised as of crucial importance in the development of a certain French prose style, whose reverberations can be traced through, for example, Marivaux, Balzac, Proust. The ordinary first edition is itself an uncommon book, but the earliest (extant?) state which we offer here is a black tulip of French bibliophily. Tchemerzine, III, p. 791 sq. knows 5 such copies; Scheler can add one; another, apparently the first at auction, was sold in 2016 (from the auctioneer's description a less good copy than ours). The present copy would be the eighth. La Bruyère reworked and enlarged the book through five successive editions, and the same editorial zeal is shown in this first edition. Le Petit pp.428-432 distinguishes 3 'tirages' Of the first, with no cancelled leaves, no copies are known, and it is very likely a chimera: we cannot know why the three leaves cancelled in all known copies were cancelled, but there is no reason to suppose the cancellanda ever left the printing shop. The third tirage has (normally) 16 cancelled leaves, several with more than one revision of text, recto and verso; as is usual with such operations occasionally the odd uncancelled leaf is not noticed - but there is still clear water between second and third tirages: it is clear that La Bruyère halted … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lund (falso luogo), e Amsterdam, Jansson Waesberg, 1688. 2 opere in l vol. in-4° (21 x 16), di pp. 810)+565+(33); pp. 820)+298; pp. (2)+148. 812: "Rare... Cet ouvrage... fit du bruit". L'opera nel 1677 fu condannat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre Joseph d'Orleans
Barbin, 1688. Edizione originale, In-4°; pp. (30), 319, 37; un monogramma inciso su legno al frontespizio; legatura in pelle con tassello e titolo in oro al dorso, tagli spruzzati. TACHARD, Guy
London J. Robinson 1688 First English Edition. A very good copy in co0ntemporary dark brown calf, rebacked early 20th century retaining portions of the original spine, LACKING TITLE (Supplied in facsimnile) and apparently lacking plates 20, 21, 22. There are 27 engraved maps and plates, 17 of which are folding, plate 13 strengthened with clear tape on fold. In general otherwise a clean tight example of the rare English edition of Tachard's important voyage. Tachard was sent in 1685 with five other Jesuits under Superior Jean de Fontaney, on a first French embassy to Siam led by Chevalier de Chaumont and François-Timoléon de Choisy, and accompanied by Claude de Forbin. The objective of the Jesuits was to complete a scientific expedition to the Indies and China.[3] Enticed by the Greek Constantine Phaulkon, he returned to France to suggest an alliance with the king of Siam Narai to Louis XIV. The five other Jesuits Fathers continued to China where they arrived in February 1688: Jean de Fontaney (1643-1710), Joachim Bouvet (1656-1730), Jean-François Gerbillon (1654-1707), Louis Le Comte (1655-1728) and Claude de Visdelou (1656-1737).[4] The two ships of the embassy returned to France with a Siamese embassy on board, led by the Siamese ambassador Kosa Pan,[5] who was bringing a proposal for an eternal alliance between France and Siam. The embassy stayed in France from June 1686 to March 1687.first edition

[Medical manuscript]. (Anna) Maria Magdalena Winkler, née Seeauer, burgher of Ischl, Austria (1668-1745).
1688. German manuscript on paper (watermark: crowned double-headed eagle, counter-sign CH), probably by two or three different hands. 196 unnumbered ff. with 197 written pages. Contemporary half vellum with remains of ties, 4to (158 × 200 mm). Loosely inserted between the leaves are 9 slips of paper in various sizes, some folded and written on several sides, containing additional recipes (including the remainder of a letter, addressed to the book's owner in Ischl), as well as a strip of cotton cloth from the 17th or early 18th century. An extensive, privately compiled medical manuscript, owned and in all likelihood largely written by a patrician lady from Ischl in the Austrian Salzkammergut region. The recipes contained appear to some extent based on popular tradition, but more frequently on Paracelsian sources and generally on the Paracelsian-inflected pharmacology and chemical medicine of the Renaissance. A relevant example is provided by the very first recipe, "daß gerechte Froschlaichpflaster" - a frogspawn bandage on a white lead basis, as it was frequently applied by surgeons as early as the 16th century to advance wound healing: "Froschlaich 2 lb., Baumöll 1½ Virting, Wein Essig 3 loth.
