MAGAILLANS, GABRIEL DE
Claude Barbin, Paris, 1688. First Edition, 4to, original marbled boards, rebacked half calf gilt, spine elaborately gilt, morocco label, with a large folding engraved plan of Peking. After first spending six years in the Portuguese colony of Goa, Magalhães arrived in Hangzhou in 1640. He was then sent to Chengdu in Sichuan and arrived in August 1642. He began a close association with fellow Jesuit Lodovigo Buglio in Chengdu, and started to study Chinese under Buglio's guidance. Buglio would become his biographer 35 years later. Both Magalhães and Buglio were pressed to served under the rebel "King of the West", Zhang Xiangzong (: Chang Hsien-chung) after Zhang captured Sichuan in 1644. Initially Magalhães wrote sympathetically of Zhang's attempts at empire-building in Chengdu, but became fearful when Zhang started his campaign of terror in Sichuan. After Zhang was defeated by the Manchus in 1647, the pair were captured by Hooge. In his plea to avoid execution, Magalhães claimed the German Jesuit Adam Schall as their "elder brother" who was recognized by the Manchu commander. They were taken to the Forbidden City in Peking in 1648 where they was well received by the Shunzhi emperor, and were given a church, house and income. He and Buglio undertook the construction of the original St. Joseph's Church in Peking (originally known as Dong Tang or Eastern Church). Magalhães was given the duty of maintaining various Western machinery, including the clocks at the court of the Shunzhi and Kangxi emperors. He built a number of mechanical devices, including a carillon and turret cloc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI
Scarce and historically important map of the Siamese capital of Ayutthaya, by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, issued immediately prior to the Siamese Revolution of 1688, which henceforth restricted European activities in the kingdom. This example of the map is taken from the very rare Coronelli's "Citta, Fortezze e, Isole, e Porti principlai dell'Europa in Pianta et in Elevatione, Descritte, e Publicate Ad uso dell'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti dal Padre Maestro Coronelli Lettore, e Cosmografo della Serenissima Republica di Venezia" printed in Venice by Domenico Padovani in 1689. The present work is the finest and most important printed map of Ayutthaya (transliterated on the map as 'Iudia'), which served as the capital the Kingdom of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI
Venezia, 1688. Decorative and highly detailed map of the Gulf of Venice. Includes an ornate cartouche with 23 city plans in medallions and a large coat of arms. The second cartouche includes a large coat of arms and there are over a dozen other coats of arms in the map itself. One of the most decorative of all 17th Century maps of the region. Coronelli was possibly the best Italian mapmaker of his time. He made globes, including one 5 meters in diameter for Louis XIV. From Coronelli's rare Atlante Veneto, one of the most decorative and ornate of all 17th Century Atlases. The map exhibits the fine engraving style of this coveted Venetian Atlas. A nice example, with fine original colouring, very ggod condition. Lago-Rossit, Descriptio Histriae, XCIV. 630 490mm

NOBLE Eustache Le
Leyde: Elzevir. first editions. Editions elzeviriennes the Sphere. Full contemporary calf, spine tooled raised. Book consists of 5 texts in the first edition together in one volume: The Chamber of Accounts of Innocent XI (5 ° dialogue), The Dream of Pasquin or prom Europe (2 dialogue), The Feast of Guillemot '4 No dialogue), Stone political button, the Diet of Augsburg (9th dialogue). Dialogues appeared anonymously between "1688 and 1691 are pasquinades satirical dialogues between two characters arlequinesques Pasquin and Marsorio. Pasquin is leading the subject, his sidekick asking questions. The whole is treated with due lightness, easily read, the humor and satire are often irresistible. These dialogues were published separately, and each contain a title page, with a publisher often fanciful name and a different city, it goes without saying that there is only one editor really. It was published 19 dialogues, it is naturally very rare to see together. The subjects of each dialogue are different and are, as the title indicates, the main business of the time, and the situation of European countries. Only the first dialogue of the book: the bedroom Innocent XI accounts, do not put in a situation both regular characters, because it is a dialogue between the Pope and Saint-Pierre, the dialogue is nevertheless the fifth pasquinades dialogue. French writer often worn with pamphlets and satire, Eustache le Noble (1643-1711), Baron de Saint-Georges and Teneliere, was imprisoned in the Conciergerie for fraudulent acts, escaped, then was caught again and banished of France for 9 yea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Magalhães] Magaillans, Gabriel de; John Ogilby, translator
London printed for Thomas Newborough, at the Golden Ball, in S. Paul's Church-yard. First English edition. 8vo (19.5 x 12.5 cm), pp.[xxiv], 148, (193)-352 [text complete, erroneous pagination], large folding plan of Beijing, woodcut text illustration. Some printed Chinese characters in text. A very good copy attractively rebound in recent half calf. Small tear to a1 (pp.xvii-xviii) repaired. Gabriel de Magalhães (1609-1677) was a Portuguese Jesuit missionary to China, whose account was described by Lach (I, p.424) as "perhaps the most comprehensive and perceptive general description of China published during the second half of the century". His twenty-page chapter on Chinese phonetics was the most detailed then available in Europe; on p.83 he provides a text fragment by Confucius printed in sixteen Chinese characters. This was probably the first presentation of a Chinese text in its original format and script to a European audience. Magalhães wrote the Portuguese original in 1668; his manuscript was brought back to Europe by Philippe Couplet in 1682. Claude Bernou edited the text and translated it into French. He also prepared the plan of Beijing. The first edition was published at Paris in 1688. Wing M247; see Löwendahl 189 for French edition [Attributes: First Edition]

Milton, John
London: Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-lane near Fleet-street, 1688. London: Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-lane near Fleet-street, 1688. First illustrated edition of Milton's masterpiece. Folio, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, with portrait frontispiece, illustrated throughout. In very good condition with some toning to the text. An exceptional example. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece... Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful." By 1688, when England was on the verge of the Whig revolution, Milton's reputation had revived considerably. He was commended for his republicanism as well as his record as a defender of liberty. His supporters believed that his greatest poetic achievement merited this handsome, monumental edition. One of the earliest examples of subscription publishing, finan … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROWNE, Thomas
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "We carry within us the wonders we seek without us." ― Thomas Browne Sir Thomas Browne was a 17th-century English scholar known for his studies in science, medicine and especially theology. His most known work was 'Religio Medici', a controversial theological testament of psychology and philosophy. Browne uses scientific imagery to illustrated religious truths, something the Catholic Church highly disapproved of. Shortly after its authorized publication, it was immediately placed on the Prohibited Book Index. This book widely influenced authors such as Thomas de Quincey in his 'Opium-Eater' as well as physician William Osler who was known to have 'memorized' it! (Bliss, p. 45) This 1688 Dutch edition is a collective edition of the works of Sir Thomas Browne. Works featured include: · 'Pseudo-Doxia Epidemica' o Browne's response to common errors and superstitions · 'Religio Medici' · 'Hydriotaphia, Urn Burial' o A work on the discovery of Roman urn books and description of antiquities found in burial and funeral grounds · 'The Garden of Cyrus' o A discourse on hermetic wisdom · 'Miscellaneous'. Bibliografia: Lago-Rossit, Descriptio Histriae, tav. XCIII, pp. 186-187. In 1690 Vincenzo Coronelli drew this two-sheets map depicting the coasts of Istria and Dalmatia. The map was published both as a single map and as a part of the Island Book of the Atlante Veneto which Coronelli published in Venice in 1696. This engraving depicts the administrative territory of the Adriatic coasts taken between Istria and Albania and it represents one of the first thematic maps about the organizational-administrative scheme of the area, when Dalmatia became part of the Venetian Republic. Clement was an important Greek philosopher and is regarded as a Catholic saint even though his philosophy heavily influenced Christianity and Anglicanism. Clement is most often remembered for his three major works which are referred to as Clement's Trilogy. 'Protrepticus,' 'Paedagogus,' and 'Stromata' primarily deal with aspects of Christian faith and his attempts to teach both believers and non-believers of Christian doctrine. He attempted to convert pagans to Christianity and sought to disprove the superstitions that were often associated with pagans. Other topics featured in the works of Clement include discussion of marriage, asceticism, martyrdom, proof of the existence of God, dangers of materialism and literary plagiarism, and much more! This 1688 printing, printed in parallel Greek and Latin, features the commentary and edits of Friedrich Sylburg, who is known for his editions of Clement, Xenophon, and Justin Martyr. [MILITARY HISTORY].
ESTC R36213; Ira D. Gruber, Books and the British army in the age of the American Revolution, p. 186; not in Sloos, Warfare. First and only edition of an account of the second year of what was to be known as the Nine Years' War (1688-1697), "written by an English officer, who was there during the last campaign" (title-page). The Nine Years' War was a conflict between France and the "confederate forces": England, the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, Spain, the Dutch Republic and Savoy. The author narrates the events in the Dutch Republic and Spanish Netherlands from 9 June 1689 to 4 October 1689. He lists places and cities where the army passed through or camped, often describing the cities in great detail, commenting on their fortification, prominent architecture, customs and more. Included at the end is "a list of our army as it was drawn up at Tillroy camp" (pp. 25-32), listing the horse- and foot-regiments and dragoons, together with the names and nationalities of their commanders, the colours of the soldiers uniforms, and the number of men. With an inscription in ink on title-page, dated 1871. Page 26-27 very closely trimmed, leaves browned, some faint and mostly marginal water stains, otherwise a good copy.

All eight antique Roman Catholic Christian Books, are offered as is, in rather great condition. All are leather bound. Better than expected condition for the extreme age. The books were gathered from an old cellar from overseas and some pages, in some of the books, have mild small mold stains that look like spots. Other than that, no fading, no missing pages, no folds, and no smears. Great for the serious religious artifact collector! Timeline considerations: *1603: William Shakespeare publishes his masterpiece: Hamlet. *1605: Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes publishes Don Quixote, considered to be the first modern novel and is still widely read today. *1609: The world's first newspaper is published in Strasbourg in the Holy Roman Empire. *1610: Italian scientist Galileo Galilei publishes a report that proves the Earth orbits the Sun. *1610: Tea is imported to Europe for the first time by the Dutch East India Company. *1628: British physician William Harvey publishes a scientific book that explains the circulatory system on how arteries and veins work and the heart as the center. *1656: Dutch astronomer Christian Huygens invents the pendulum clock. This new type of clock kept accurate and steady time and became a standard design for the next couple of centuries. *1674: Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek becomes the world's first person to observe micro- organisms with a microscope of his own design. *1687: English scientist Isaac Newton publishes a book that describes the laws of gravity and the laws of m motion. *1683: Oxford University in England opens up the world … [Click Below for Full Description]

A DISCOURSE UPON THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN This important treatise unveils, in few but telling words, the nature of prayer, about which mankind has made most awful mistakes. Multitudes conceive that the heart-searching God can be influenced and propitiated by eloquent words and forms of prayer; whilst the few, who are taught by the Holy Spirit, feel and know that the ardent desire, the aspirations, the fervent wishes of the mind, can alone be accepted by the Eternal; and even then only through the merits of the Redeemer. The first edition appeared in 1635, and it soon became a very popular book. The use and application announced at the end do not appear to have been published, unless the author meant one of his later productions to answer that purpose. The twelfth edition has no date on the title page; to … [Click Below for Full Description]

AMELOT, Denis
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An impressive 17th-century printing of the French New Testament. This translation was based on the Clementine Vulgate furnished with notes by Denis Amelote. According to Darlow and Moule, "Amelote (1606-78) was a bitter controversialist against the Jansenists. Annoyed by a satirical replay of P. Nicole, he used his influence to prevent the publication of the newly-completed Port Royal version of the New Testament, which consequently had to be printed outside France. He thus secured an open field for this annotated translation of the New Testament, prepared by himself, and published first in 1666, and again in 1681. According to this own statement, Amelote undertook this work at the request of the Archbishop of Toulouse and the Bishop of Montauban, who had been appointed by l'Assemblee generale du Clerge de France de l'an 1655' to secure a fresh version. According to the Port-Royalists, confirmed by Sainte-Beuve, Ameote's production is merely the Port Royal version, disguised by certain changes." This three-volume set is bound in two tomes - volume 1 dated 1688, volume 2 dated 1687, while volume 3 has only a half-title. It includes foot-notes, tables, and maps. Illustrations include a map of the Holy Land, Paul's missionary journeys, folding views of the temple of Jerusalem, Herod's temple, and the city of Jerusalem. [Attributes: First Edition]
