Milton, John
London: Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-lane near Fleet-street, 1688. London: Printed by Miles Flesher, for Jacob Tonson, at the Judge's-Head in Chancery-lane near Fleet-street, 1688. First illustrated edition of Milton's masterpiece. Folio, bound in full calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, with portrait frontispiece, illustrated throughout. In very good condition with some toning to the text. An exceptional example. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece... Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful." By 1688, when England was on the verge of the Whig revolution, Milton's reputation had revived considerably. He was commended for his republicanism as well as his record as a defender of liberty. His supporters believed that his greatest poetic achievement merited this handsome, monumental edition. One of the earliest examples of subscription publishing, finan … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROWNE, Thomas
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "We carry within us the wonders we seek without us." ― Thomas Browne Sir Thomas Browne was a 17th-century English scholar known for his studies in science, medicine and especially theology. His most known work was 'Religio Medici', a controversial theological testament of psychology and philosophy. Browne uses scientific imagery to illustrated religious truths, something the Catholic Church highly disapproved of. Shortly after its authorized publication, it was immediately placed on the Prohibited Book Index. This book widely influenced authors such as Thomas de Quincey in his 'Opium-Eater' as well as physician William Osler who was known to have 'memorized' it! (Bliss, p. 45) This 1688 Dutch edition is a collective edition of the works of Sir Thomas Browne. Works featured include: · 'Pseudo-Doxia Epidemica' o Browne's response to common errors and superstitions · 'Religio Medici' · 'Hydriotaphia, Urn Burial' o A work on the discovery of Roman urn books and description of antiquities found in burial and funeral grounds · 'The Garden of Cyrus' o A discourse on hermetic wisdom · 'Miscellaneous'. Bibliografia: Lago-Rossit, Descriptio Histriae, tav. XCIII, pp. 186-187. In 1690 Vincenzo Coronelli drew this two-sheets map depicting the coasts of Istria and Dalmatia. Clement was an important Greek philosopher and is regarded as a Catholic saint even though his philosophy heavily influenced Christianity and Anglicanism. Clement is most often remembered for his three major works which are referred to as Clement's Trilogy. 'Protrepticus,' 'Paedagogus,' and 'Stromata' primarily deal with aspects of Christian faith and his attempts to teach both believers and non-believers of Christian doctrine. He attempted to convert pagans to Christianity and sought to disprove the superstitions that were often associated with pagans. Other topics featured in the works of Clement include discussion of marriage, asceticism, martyrdom, proof of the existence of God, dangers of materialism and literary plagiarism, and much more! First and only edition of an account of the second year of what was to be known as the Nine Years' War (1688-1697), "written by an English officer, who was there during the last campaign" (title-page). The Nine Years' War was a conflict between France and the "confederate forces": England, the Holy Roman Empire, Austria, Spain, the Dutch Republic and Savoy. The author narrates the events in the Dutch Republic and Spanish Netherlands from 9 June 1689 to 4 October 1689. He lists places and cities where the army passed through or camped, often describing the cities in great detail, commenting on their fortification, prominent architecture, customs and more. Included at the end is "a list of our army as it was drawn up at Tillroy camp" (pp. 25-32), listing the horse- and foot-regiments and dragoons, together with the names and nationalities of their commanders, the colours of the soldiers uniforms, and the number of men. With an inscription in ink on title-page, dated 1871. Page 26-27 very closely trimmed, leaves browned, some faint and mostly marginal water stains, otherwise a good copy.

AMELOT, Denis
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An impressive 17th-century printing of the French New Testament. This translation was based on the Clementine Vulgate furnished with notes by Denis Amelote. According to Darlow and Moule, "Amelote (1606-78) was a bitter controversialist against the Jansenists. Annoyed by a satirical replay of P. Nicole, he used his influence to prevent the publication of the newly-completed Port Royal version of the New Testament, which consequently had to be printed outside France. He thus secured an open field for this annotated translation of the New Testament, prepared by himself, and published first in 1666, and again in 1681. According to this own statement, Amelote undertook this work at the request of the Archbishop of Toulouse and the Bishop of Montauban, who had been appointed by l'Assemblee generale du Clerge de France de l'an 1655' to secure a fresh version. According to the Port-Royalists, confirmed by Sainte-Beuve, Ameote's production is merely the Port Royal version, disguised by certain changes." This three-volume set is bound in two tomes - volume 1 dated 1688, volume 2 dated 1687, while volume 3 has only a half-title. It includes foot-notes, tables, and maps. Illustrations include a map of the Holy Land, Paul's missionary journeys, folding views of the temple of Jerusalem, Herod's temple, and the city of Jerusalem. [Attributes: First Edition]

First edition of a well-illustrated encyclopaedia of astronomical and surveying instruments available from classical times to the time of publication, by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-ca. 1621), a well-known private tutor to the Venetian nobility and founding member of the Second Venetian Academy. It gives a comprehensive summary of the knowledge of astronomy, cosmography and mathematics at the time of Galileo. "It describes instruments designed by others (Finé, Apian, Gemma Frisius, etc.) and gives credit to the original inventors. The one exception to this is the Visorio, which Gallucci claims as his own, but an identical instrument by Waldseemüller can be found illustrated in the 1512 edition of Margarita Philosophica by Gregor Reisch. Other instruments, such as the Hemispherical Uranico (a complicated device used for computations dealing with the moon, sun and stars), appear to be of Gallucci's invention. Besides the usual portable instruments, he also includes a simple quadrant and a two-ringed armillary built into the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence" (Erwin Tomash). For some of the instruments this is the only description available. The present second issue of the first edition appeared a year after the first. With the owner's label of the Capuchin friar and astronomer Agostino da Piacenza (1747-1839) and the related library stamp "Bibliotheca Capucinorum Placentiae" on the engraved ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beughem, Cornelius (c. 1637-1710)
Joh. Wolters, Amsterdam. 12mo. 6 ff., 191 pp. Contemporary Dutch vellum, large ornament on covers stamped in blind, small fleurs-de-lis at corners of outer panel, smooth spine lettered in MS. First two blank leaves a little dry, some even toning throughout. An attractive copy. First Edition of the First Bibliography of Incunabula. Beughem applies for the first time the word "incunabulum" to the books themselves; this term had been invented in 1639 by Bernard von Mallinkrot, but was utilized by him to describe the earliest *era* of printing, the time limit having been introduced by Saubert. Beughem's arrangement is alphabetical under authors, to which a short biographical note has been added, a feature that took 225 years to be adopted by another incunabulist, Isak Collijn, in his catalogue of the incunabula in the Royal Library at Stockholm, 1914, and in turn adopted by GW. Titles, places of imprint, and dates follow; in general, the names of printers are not mentioned, but exceptions are given for exceptional books, i.e. the Fust and Schoeffer Cicero and Ratdolt's Euclid. According to E. von Rath, "Vorläufer des Gesammtkatalogs der Wiegendrucke" (in Hiersemann Festschrift, 1924), there are about 3,000 entries, an extraordinary achievement considering that by 1688 Beughem had already listed more than 10% of all incunable editions that are now known. His two appendices list anonymous works and undated imprints which Beughem believed to have been printed in the fifteenth century. Breslauer & Folter 85, describing Beughem as "without a doubt the foremost bibliographer of the 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Blome
Abraham Wolfgang, Amsterdam, 1688. A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331 pp Fin; index table; 2 final blanks. The maps are: Carte de la Jamaique; Ile des Barbades; Les Barmudes; Nouvelle Carte de la Caroline; Nouvelle Angleterre et Nouvel York; and Partie de L'Amerique. Contents are generally clean with the odd spot or mark. There is a repaired fold tear to Nouvelle Angleterre and a small tear at the base of p95. There are some light ink marks on p 299. Wien - Gesamtansicht
Dresden, Mathesius. Nebehay-W. 729, 1. [Click Below for Full Description]

Church of England
1688 Westminster Confession of Faith Church of Scotland Catechisms Calvinism ‘The Westminster Confession of Faith” was a 1646 confessional of the Church of England and doctrine of the Church of Scotland. It was become adopted by Congressionalists and Baptists in England alike supporting the Church of England as the only approved church. This work is a systematic exposition of orthodoxy which is highly influenced by Puritan theology, discusses the trinity and other doctrines that are specific to Protestantism. However, the most controversial inclusion is the statement of the Pope being the Antichrist! This was a common belief among English protestants in the 17th-century, but the ‘Westminster Confessional’ drove home this point, along with the notion that the Catholic mass was a form of idolatry. This work was printed along with the Westminster Larger and Smaller Catechisms, the central and most important catechisms of Calvinism in Great Britain.
