Indeed, his next work, Parliamentum pacificum, argued strongly in its favour, although it appeared anonymously as ‘[b]y a True Protestant and no Dissenter’. It was approved by the earl of Sunderland on 15 February 1688 and the king paid for 20,000 copies of it to be produced. A second English edition appeared; it was translated into French and Dutch and elicited three replies in Dutch alone. Gilbert Burnet replied to it in English, having been strongly criticized within it. Northleigh replied in turn in Natural Allegiance (which ran to more than 100 pages) and also in Dr Burnet's Reflections Answered (July 1688), but again anonymously. The revolution must have come as a severe blow to Northleigh. He published nothing else for fourteen years’ (ODNB). (ESTC R16029, Huntington and Berlin only; COPAC adds C, O, E, G and Leeds)

James Steuarts answer to a letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, prisoner to the states of Holland and West-Frisland concerning the repeal of the penal laws and tests

[Edinburgh] : London, printed and re-printed in Edinburgh: by John Reid, 1688. First Edinburgh Edition. 8vo. 39 pp. Signatures: A-E4, COMPLETE. Edges untrimmed (somewhat browned). Unobtrusive blindstamp on first and last leaves. Bound in recent quarter calf antique (Trevor Lloyd) THE REPEAL OF THE PENAL LAWS AND TEST ACTS DURING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION. Whereas William of Orange supported repealing the Penal Laws, but opposed the repeal of the Test Acts, his predecessor James sought to repeal the Penal Laws AND the Test Acts, thereby allowing Catholics the right to hold public office. This is the rare first Edinburgh edition; ESTC lists only BL and NLS in the United Kingdom, and Huntington and Univ. of Illinois in the United States. James Stewart (1635-1713) was one of the leading Scottish radicals in the revolutionary movement. He was offered a pardon by James II, in return for which he sought to persuade his colleagues to return from exile in Holland. In the present pamphlet Stewart replies to a letter written by Gaspar Fagel (1634-1688) describing William's position on the repeal of the Penal Laws, the repeal of the Test Acts, and of religious toleration ("Letter writ by Mijn Heer Fagel, pensioner of Holland, to Mr. James Stewart, advocate"). "Fagel's letter provoked numerous replies and defences, and clearly established the international framework for the debate on toleration. The radical exiles in Holland, who were divided among themselves on the issue of support for, or opposition to, James' toleration policy, were placed directly in the midst of a propaganda and power struggle between James II and William, and ultimately between England and Holland. In very concrete and practical terms, the exiles' position on the issue of toleration was tied to their willingness to accept a pardon from James and return to Britain, as an endorsement of Stewart's claim that all was well there, or to remain in Holland and continue their fight against James, counting on the support and encouragement of William" (SOURCE: Richard Ashcraft, "Revolutionary Politics and Locke's Two Treatises of Government" p. 486). Ours is apparently the only copy currently on the market; no copies has appeared at auction in at least 30 years. Aldis 2821. Wing S5534.

L' Afrique dressee sur les Relations les plus Recentes?

Double page engraved map (28" x 20"), hand colored in outline, uncolored pictorial and title cartouche. Some meaningful foxing, especially in margins, wide margins, some wear at top and bottom of centerfold, mild creasing, lower left corner missing, but well away from map; strong impression. Robert De Vaugondy (1688-1766) was one of the leading cartographers in 18th century France. This map illustrates the African continent around 1756. Reflecting the available knowledge at the time, the map doesn't show as much detail in some portions of the interior, and tribal names are used in some areas. However, according to Norwich, the lakes and rivers appear quite accurate. The cartouche on this map illustrates a native woman reclining between two palm trees with a lion at her feet. Norwich 94.

        The Royal Commentaries of Peru

1688. GARCILASO DE LA VEGA. The Royal Commentaries of Peru... Illustrated with sculptures. Written originally in Spanish, by the Inca Garcilasso de la Vega, and rendered into English, by Sir Paul Rycaut, Kt. viii, 1019, [9] pp. (pages 23-26 omitted in numbering). With an engraved portrait of the translator and 10 full-page engraved plates. Folio, bound in contemporary English mottled calf, spine gilt, recent red label. London: Miles Flesher for Jacob Tonson, 1688.|~| |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition in English. Garcilaso de la Vega's most important work, The Royal Commentaries of Peru, is a valuable source of information about the conquest of Peru and the lives and legends of the Inca. Garcilaso (1539-1617) was the son of the Spanish conqueror, Sebastian Garcilaso de la Vega y Vargas, who had married an Inca princess named Chimpa Ocllo, the grand-daughter of the great Tupac Yupanqui, the last of the Incas. "The Inca mother taught her son the language of the ancient inhabitants of Peru, and suggested to him the idea of writing a history of these people. For this purpose, Garcilaso travelled over the entire empire of the Incas, got as much information suitable for his purpose as he could gather from both the natives and the new colonists, and consulted the few remaining monuments of that race... As a historian of Peru and its people, Garcilaso enjoyed singular advantages, for his mother, an Inca princess and her relations told him everything concerning their ancestors, omitting nothing, as they considered him one of their race. On the other hand, his father, who was the Governor of Cuzco, was on intimate terms with many of the conquerors, so that from them the historian heard the accounts of their deeds. Garcilaso, therefore, was in a position to get information at first hand from both the natives and their conquerors. His work is of great historic value, as it constitutes practically the only document we possess of the ancient civilization of Peru" (Catholic Encyclopedia). The work is arranged in two parts: the first concerns the original Incas, their religions, laws and government, and their reigns and conquests. The second part describes the manner by which the Incan empire was conquered by the Spaniards; it also relates the civil wars between the Piçarrists and the Almagrians. This folio volume contains numerous engravings which suggest admiration for Incan achievements, while condemning the Spanish destruction of Incan civilization. There are artistic renderings of Cuzco, Pizarro's arrival in Peru (which imitates numerous other depictions of initial encounters between Europeans and American natives), a vision of Spanish cruelty during their attack on Cuzco, the death of Atahualpa (while the Spaniards look on, innocently) and more. This is the first English translation of Garcilaso's Comentarios reales de los Incas (Part 1 of the Spanish original was first printed at Lisbon in 1608 (i.e. 1609); pt. 2 was first printed at Cordova in 1616). "... [Rycaut] had a very slight knowledge of the Spanish language and he did not scruple to make wild guesses at the meaning of sentences, and to omit whole chapters. Thus he only gives fourteen out of the twenty-six chapters in the first book, and sixteen out of the twenty-six in the second" (C.S. Markham's introduction to the First part of the Royal commentaries, 1869-71, v. 1, p. xvi). Of this first English edition, two other issues are known (priority indeterminate): one listing "C. Wilkinson" as publisher, the other "S. Heyrick." This copy formed part of the notable library of Arthur St. Leger, 1st Viscount of Doneraile and 1st Baron on Kilmayden, descendant of the Anglo-Norman house of St. Leger, and the owner of the fabulous estate at Doneraile Court (County Cork). Doneraile (d. 1727) was an active Freemason; his daughter was discovered witnessing a secret Freemason initiation ceremony in the Doneraile Library (over which her father was preciding). All present decided that the proceedings must remain secret; consequently the young woman herself was immediately initiated as a Freemason, and thus became one of only three female Freemasons in history.         Paradise Lost A Poem in Twelve Books

London: Jacob Tonson, 1688. Fourth edition overall, first illustrated and first folio edition. Folio (pages measure: 375 x 235 mm), collating: [4], 343, [7]. Complete with a frontispiece portrait of Milton and 12 plates, mainly by J B Medina. Contemporary English red morocco; covers with three concentric double fillet frames; spine with six raised bands, each compartment with a central lozenge and corner pieces; all edges gilt; contemporary combed marbled endpapers. Scattered slight spotting, stains, and age-toning; margins of a several early and late leaves worn and frayed, a couple of closed tears repaired not affecting text, occasional early marginal annotations. Extremities rubbed, lower corners a little worn, old repairs to the head and foot of the spine. A very good, authentic copy and quite scarce in a contemporary binding. And for what it's worth, I'd take this copy over one that's been washed, pressed, done-up and popped into a new binding with all the appeal of an aging call-girl in a prom dress. The first illustrated edition of Paradise Lost with a full page engraving at the beginning of each of the twelve books. The 1688 Milton was also one of the earliest examples of a subscription edition in England (together with the Shakespeare Second Folio), the copyright jointly owned by Jacob Tonson and Richard Bentley. This copy has an 18th century ownership inscription of George Downing on the title page - possibly a member of the Downing family of Cambridgeshire, two of whom are in the subscribers' list at the end of the book: Charles and William Downing, sons of George Downing, first baronet (1632-1684). If this is indeed a subscriber's copy, the red morocco binding would be consistent. Milton's magisterial epic, considered one of the finest works in the English language. According to Samuel Johnson Paradise Lost was "...a poem which...with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind." Milton was in his late fifties - and blind - when the book was composed and so wrote the work almost entirely through dictation. He worked through incredible hardship, coping with the physical illness, gout, as well as the death of his young daughter and wife. Interestingly enough, Milton did not intend at first to write a poem about Satan and the creation of man but rather about King Arthur. Despite its genius, the book did not become immediately popular until the 1688 edition. It was the first edition that was accompanied by illustrations and one of the earliest copies of a book to be sold by subscription. Most of the plates were by John Baptist Medina, and the ones depicting Satan surveying his kingdom and the rebel angels in his court are particularly vivid and notable. PROVENANCE: (1) George Downing (inscription on title dated 1769). (2) Mary Frances Wright (inscription on title dated 1855). ESTC R15589; Coleridge 93b; Pforzheimer 720.

Ex typographia Ioannis Iacobi Komarek,, Romae, 1688 - Cm. 23,5 pp. (16) 291 (1). Qualche rara e lieve fioritura, altrimenti esemplare genuino, marginoso e ben conservato. Prima edizione. Molto raro.
