Paradise Lost A Poem in Twelve Books

London: Jacob Tonson, 1688. Fourth edition overall, first illustrated and first folio edition. Folio (pages measure: 375 x 235 mm), collating: [4], 343, [7]. Complete with a frontispiece portrait of Milton and 12 plates, mainly by J B Medina. Contemporary English red morocco; covers with three concentric double fillet frames; spine with six raised bands, each compartment with a central lozenge and corner pieces; all edges gilt; contemporary combed marbled endpapers. Scattered slight spotting, stains, and age-toning; margins of a several early and late leaves worn and frayed, a couple of closed tears repaired not affecting text, occasional early marginal annotations. Extremities rubbed, lower corners a little worn, old repairs to the head and foot of the spine. A very good, authentic copy and quite scarce in a contemporary binding. And for what it's worth, I'd take this copy over one that's been washed, pressed, done-up and popped into a new binding with all the appeal of an aging call-girl in a prom dress. The first illustrated edition of Paradise Lost with a full page engraving at the beginning of each of the twelve books. The 1688 Milton was also one of the earliest examples of a subscription edition in England (together with the Shakespeare Second Folio), the copyright jointly owned by Jacob Tonson and Richard Bentley. This copy has an 18th century ownership inscription of George Downing on the title page - possibly a member of the Downing family of Cambridgeshire, two of whom are in the subscribers' list at the end of the book: Charles and William Downing, sons of George Downing, first baronet (1632-1684). If this is indeed a subscriber's copy, the red morocco binding would be consistent. Milton's magisterial epic, considered one of the finest works in the English language. According to Samuel Johnson Paradise Lost was "...a poem which...with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind." Milton was in his late fifties - and blind - when the book was composed and so wrote the work almost entirely through dictation. He worked through incredible hardship, coping with the physical illness, gout, as well as the death of his young daughter and wife. Interestingly enough, Milton did not intend at first to write a poem about Satan and the creation of man but rather about King Arthur. Despite its genius, the book did not become immediately popular until the 1688 edition. It was the first edition that was accompanied by illustrations and one of the earliest copies of a book to be sold by subscription. Most of the plates were by John Baptist Medina, and the ones depicting Satan surveying his kingdom and the rebel angels in his court are particularly vivid and notable. PROVENANCE: (1) George Downing (inscription on title dated 1769). (2) Mary Frances Wright (inscription on title dated 1855). ESTC R15589; Coleridge 93b; Pforzheimer 720.

Ad sanctissimum, et beatissimum patrem d. n. Innocentium xi pont. max. Coniecturae de perpetuo azymorum usu in ecclesia Latina, vel saltem Romana, qua occasione vox fermenti in Melchiadis, & siricii decretis, ac in epistola Innocentii I rom. pont. alijque veteres ecclesiastici ritus declarantur. Auctore ioanne ciampino magistro brevium gratiae, ac in vitraque signatura referendario.

Ex typographia Ioannis Iacobi Komarek,, Romae, 1688 - Cm. 23,5 pp. (16) 291 (1). Qualche rara e lieve fioritura, altrimenti esemplare genuino, marginoso e ben conservato. Prima edizione. Molto raro.         A Short Account of the Authorities [Bound With] The Lord Chief

1688. A Watershed Case Concerning Royal Prerogative at the Time of the Glorious Revolution Herbert, Sir Edward [1648?-1698]. A Short Account of the Authorities in Law, Upon which Judgement was Given in Sir. Edw. Hales His Case. Written by Sir. Edw. Herbert. Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, In Vindication of Himself. London: Printed for M. Clark, 1688. 39, [1] pp. [Bound with] A[twood], W[illiam] [c.1650-1712]. The Lord Chief Justice Herbert's Account Examin'd By W.A. Barrister at Law. Wherein it is Shewn, That Those Authorities in Law, Whereby he Would Excuse His Judgment in Sir Edward Hales His Case, Are Very Unfairly Cited, And as Ill Applied. London: Printed for J. Robinson, 1689. [ii], 72, [2] pp. Quarto (7-1/2" x 6"). Recent flexible marbled boards, printed paper title label to spine. Light toning to text, faint dampstaining along foot of text block, light soiling to title pages, internally clean. * Only editions. These two items, bound together in a previous deteriorated old binding, relate to a watershed case concerning royal prerogative. This case involved Sir Edward Hales, a Roman Catholic, who was convicted in 1686 at the Rochester Assizes for holding a military commission without taking the sacrament and the oaths of allegiance and supremacy of the Church of England, which were required by the Test Act. Hales said he was exempted because he was given a dispensation by King James II, a Catholic. Shortly afterwards, in a test action arranged by opponents of the king, Hales's coachman brought a collusive case against him in the Court of King's Bench, ostensibly to get a bounty for turning in a non-conformer. The case was argued before Herbert, who threw out the case. Moreover, his decision declared, without qualification, that kings of England are sovereign princes and that the nation's laws are his laws. The King is entitled, then, to dispense with penal laws in particular cases, such as Hales's failure to submit to the laws prescribed by the Test Act. Ultimately, the king himself is the sole judge of the laws of Great Britain. This verdict provoked a wave of controversy, and with it a torrent of pamphlets. A Short Account is a response to An Enquiry into the Power of Dispensing with Penal Statutes by Sir Robert Atkyns, which pointed out defects in Herbert's legal reasoning. Atwood's

Cosmopoli (Venezia), s.e. (Poletti), s.d. (1688 ca.). In-24 gr. (mm. 145x80), 2 parti in 1 vol., p. pergam. coeva (risg. rifatti), pp. 154, 1 c.b., compreso il bel frontespizio figur. inc. in rame. "Edizione originale", di grande rarità. Cfr. Seconda parte. In Parigi, presso Claudio Riud, 1692, pp. (8),84, 2 cc.b. "rarissimo complemento"?". Cfr. anche Gamba,1956 (in Nota). Esemplare ben conservato.

Parisiis, e Typographia Regia, 1688. Folio. (20),52,614,(26) p. Early 19th century boards. 46.5 x 32 cm (Ref: Neue Pauly 2,1168; LMA 2,1953/4 both s.v. Chronicon Paschale; Brunet I,1435 & 1859; Ebert 3221,21) (Details: Dark blue spine with a red letterpiece and gilt fillets; wide uncut margins, thick paper; engraved printer's device of the Typographia Regia on the title; 4 beautiful engraved headpieces, 2 large initials, 2 engravings in the text; Greek text and Latin translation juxtaposed) (Condition: Cover worn, esp. at extremities; corners bumped; paper on covers grazed at places; letterpiece on the back damaged; some gatherings slightly browning) (Note: The Chronicon Paschale was compiled between 631 and 641 by a clergyman in the time of the emperor Herakleitos. Because the compiler is very interested in establishing the date of Eastern, Du Cange called it the Chronicon Paschale. The chronology starts with Adam, and ends in 628, where the manuscript breaks off. From 602 onward the compiler was eyewitness of the important events of his days. The historical data and the use of documents, records and charters make this book one of the most important sources of Greek christian chronology. Brunet mentiones that this work was number 4 of the series Corpus historiae byzantinae scriptores. Ebert however says that this is number 21 of the series. C. du Fresne du Cange, 1610-1688, best known for his large glossary on Medieval Latin, 'Glossarium ad scriptores Mediae & Infimae Latinitatis', was one of the greatest lexicographers of France, and his work in this field still remains unsurpassed. His work on byzantine history is best illustrated by his Historia Byzantina of 1680, and his edition of Ville-Hardouin's History of the Latin conquest of Constantinople, of 1657) (Provenance: Ex libris en codicibus Episcopi Brugensis XIX, 1863) (Collation: *6 (*1 blank) 2*4, â4 ê4 î4 ô4 û4, 2â4 2ê2, A - 4L4) (Photographs on request)

The Free-Born Subject: Or, The Englishmans Birthright: Asserted

1688. You May Be "Free-Born," But You're Still a "Subject" L'Estrange, Sir Roger [1616-1704]. The Free-Born Subject: Or, The Englishmans Birthright: Asserted Against all Tyrannical Usurpations Either in Church or State. London: Printed for Henry Brome, 1681. [ii], 30 pp. Quarto (8-1/4" x 6-1/2"). Recent stiff marbled wrappers, printed paper title panel to front cover, untrimmed edges. Light toning to text, some browning to margins of title page and following leaf, internally clean. A handsome copy of a scarce title. * Third edition. L'Estrange, a staunch Tory and defender of Royalist claims, was a prolific pamphleteer and author. He fought for the Royalists during the Civil War and ended the war in exile in Holland. His career flourished during the Restoration. He became the royal censor under Charles II, was knighted by King James II and became a Member of Parliament for Winchester from 1685 to 1689. First published in 1679, The Free-Born Subject, despite its Whiggish title, is a statement of absolutist political theory. It warns those who propose a "notion" like the law of nature rather than settling for the "fact" of customary obedience. What's more, too many stress being a "free-born" person rather than being a "subject." Failure to observe this distinction can only lead to trouble. He accepts the existence of legal limitations for subjects and kings, but to the latter only as far as his conscience determines. Other editions were published in 1680, 1681 and 1688. Few copies of any edition are held in North American law libraries, none of the third. Duncan-Page and Lynch, Roger L'Estrange and the Making of Restoration Culture 198.         The Legality of the Court Held by His Majesties Ecclesiastical

1688. A Plea for Religious Freedom (Or a Play for Royal Favor) Published on the Eve of the Glorious Revolution Care, Henry [1646-1688]. The Legality of the Court Held by His Majesties Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Defended. Their Proceedings no Argument Against the Taking Off Penal Laws & Tests. London: Printed, And are to be Sold by Richard Janeway, 1688. [iv], 39, [1] pp. With a preliminary imprimatur leaf. Final page blank. Quarto (8-1/4" x 6-1/2"). Recent stiff marbled wrappers, printed paper title panel to front cover, untrimmed edges. Title page printed within ruled border. Light toning to text, soiling to recto of first leaf and verso of final leaf, internally clean. A handsome copy of a scarce title. * Only edition. Long an enemy of Catholicism and royal prerogative, Care shifted course in this pamphlet to support the right of King James II to exempt individuals from the requirements of the Test Act, which required university students, civil servants, elected officials and military officers to take oaths declaring allegiance to the Church of England and its supremacy and to partake in the Church's sacraments. Care's pamphlet relates to a recent controversy regarding Sir Edward Hales, a Catholic military officer who was granted an exemption to the Act's requirements by the king, an action deemed legal by Lord Chief Justice Sir Edward Herbert. Scholars are unsure why Care's wrote this pamphlet. Some believe he was making a case for religious freedom. Others detect a cynical desire for royal favor. If the latter is true Care made a poor decision; James II was deposed at the end of 1688. This is a scarce title. OCLC locates 3 copies in North American law libraries (Library of Congress, University of Minnesota, University of Virginia). English Short-Title Catalogue R23058.

Dictionnary of Classical Antiquities. p. 231). "The Praeparatio evangelica ('preparation for the gospel'), in which he shows that the Greek tradition is inferior to the Hebrew and the best of Greek philosophy merely coincided with or was derived from biblical teaching, is incidentally valuable in that it includes many quotations from classical authors now lost."         The Character of a Trimmer

By the Honourable Sir W. C., London, 1688, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good+, Dust Jacket Condition: None, 3rd EditionSize: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall, This is a 43 page item originally done as a pamphlet (so our restorer surmises) and now superbly laid into full leather boards. Restorer advises me that this is not a sewn in making and that the glue is reversible. In addition to lavish gilt stamping of the boards, the spine and the boards interior edges, it has marbled pastedowns and endsheets that have been used to excellent effect. First pastedown has Ex-libris plate from the scholar William Appleton Aiken. Collation is in quarto, primarily. The boards of the book measure 8'' x 6 1/4''. Structure is as follows, there are two restored endsheets the first of which has small pencilled notes from prior owner (re-Halifax, Wing H296, and placements). Next appears title page giving the date in Roman Numerals, MDCLXXXVIII, verso blank. Next is a 2 page preface, unpaginated. Following this the text begins, paginated 1 through 43. Text measures 7 3/4'' x 5 3/4'', fore-edge to gutter. I note darkening of the blank verso of page 43 and one dark foxing spot, about pencil eraser size page 15/16. Text is otherwise remarkable for its suppleness and legibility. The grade given above maybe thought of as a compromise between the beautiful restoration and the age of the pamphlet, Book

Voyage en Moscovie d'un Ambassadeur, Conseiller de la Chambre Imp‚riale, Envoy‚ par L'Empereur L‚opold au Czar Alexis Mihalowics, Grand Duc de Moscovie.

Leyden. Chez Friderik Harring, 1688. - 16mo, 15.2cm, first French edition, 381p., woodcuts title page device and headers, in contemporary full calf, real raised bands, gilt decoration in the panels, leather label gilt, marbled endpapers and speckled edges, wanting both free flies, worn, very good sound copy. (cgc) By Mayer, Augsutin, Baron von Meyerberg, (1612-1688). First French Translation originally published in Latin in 1668. The author, a German diplomat, was sent as an envoy by the Emperor Leopold I to the Court of Czar Alexei Michaelovitch in 1661 to re-establish peace between Poland and Russia. Mayerberg, together with his colleague Calvucci and seventeen attendants, experienced great difficulty in obtaining entry into the country. Once there, they were prevented from all external communication, finally being allowed to return to Vienna in March of 1663. His account of experiences contains much useful information on seventeenth century Russian manners and customs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Zacharias Konrad von Uffenbach, 1683-1734] to the front paste-down [engraved by Johann Ulrich Krauss of Augsburg in 1705] This exquisite and finely detailed plate depicts the inside of Uffenbach's famous libary. "The library of Uffenbach, at one time mayor of Frankfurt, was one of the largest of his time, counting, according to Buzas, 40,000 titles bound in 12,000 volumes, among them 413 incunabula. Towards the end of his life he decided to dispose of it, but frustrated by the unpredictable results of book auctions, decided to take matters into his own hands, himself compiling its catalogue, and affixing to each item the price he wished to obtain for it.".       Daniel Horthhemels, France 1688 - This book was written by a physician, C. Dellon, who was imprisoned during the Inquisition. It is an account of his experience. The book is in French. All the illustrations are intact including those that are foldout. Full leather binding. Raised bands on spine. On front pasted down endpaper is a notation (ostensibly by a former owner) who informs as to author and some details of his life. The binding is showing wear and some cracking but is intact. This is, possibly, a very early rebind of this work. Assumed first French edition. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]
