Geliebte Eltern!

Jahrhundert in Norddeutschland gebräuchlichen Tradition.

Cantus omnis ecclesiasticus ad hebdomadae maioris Missas, passionem D.N.I.C., Officia Tenebrarum, Lamentationes, Benedictiones, Processiones, &c.

Mutinae, ex Typographia Haeredum Cassiani, 1688. In folio (cm. 33,1); mezza pelle dell'Ottocento: antiporta con croce e musica in xilografia; frontespizio in rosso e nero; pp. 12 nn., 265 + 11 nn. Bella copia. R.R.Turin, Giovanni Battista Fontana, 1699. 12mo. With the woodcut coat-of-arms of Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy on the title-page. Contemporary stiff wrappers covered with gold-brocade paper.

      B. Forment, "Moonlight on Endymion: in search of 'Arcadian opera,' 1688-1721", in: Journal of seventeenth-century music XIV(2008), pp. 1-36, the present ed. at p. 16; ICCU (2 copies); KVK (3 copies, including the same 2). Very rare libretto printed for distribution to the audience at one of the earliest performances of the 1692 Arcadian opera Endimione, based on the classical Greek myth of Endymion and written in Italian verse by Francesco Lemene (1634-1704). It includes extensive additions to the text that probably appear here for the first time, making it an essential source for any study of the myth's history and development. It may also be the only edition to name the creators of stage sets for the opera, designed for the 1699 Turin production by Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1657-1743), a well-known architect, designer and painter in service of the Duke of Parma, and executed by Pietro Gio[v]anni Abbati (1683-1745), who had been his apprentice and was active in Parma and Turin. Endymion as revived in the 1690s has been called "a paradigm of the earliest operatic endeavors of the Arcadian Academy" (Forment). The Accademia degli Arcadi was a utopian reaction against the Baroque, attempting to turn Italian culture back to its glorious Renaissance roots. Directly or indirectly it probably inspired many of the later renditions of the Endymion story, including Bach's 1713 Hunt Cantata and Keats's 1818 poem that begins, "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever".Owner's inscription. With a faint water stain at the foot in the first 2 quires, minor foxing, small defects in the paper of 1 leaf, and some small black spots on the title-page, but still in good condition. The wrappers are slightly rubbed with a couple bent corners and an occasional small tear or stain, but also in good condition.

The Alcoran of Mahomet, Translated out of Arabick into French, by the Sieur du Ryer, Lord of Malezair, and Resident for the French King, at Alexandria and Newly Englished, for the satisfaction of all that Desire to look into the Turkish Vanities.

Randal Taylor, London 1688 - We offer here a sound early copy of the Koran, freshly rebound in full calf. The volume has four raised bands and is titled in gilt on leather title-label with gilt rules, while the headbands are hand-sewn. This modern binding is not elaborate, but it is strong, plain and workmanlike making the book ideal as a reference copy. The volume comprises title-page, 16 pages of essays, 18 pages on 'The Life of Mahomet' and 511 pages of the Alcoran itself. The top edge of the page block is darkened and has a water stain near the spine which has absorbed to some extent into the book. This very old area of damp, long since dried out, has faintly stained a portion of the text extending to about an inch-and-a-half in a triangular shape fanning out from the centre of the pages. In addition to this, there is slight foxing and darkening of some pages in places, while others are slightly creased. There is a small contempory inked ownership inscription at top of title-page and two smudged ink words on the top of last blank end page. Otherwise the text is in remarkably clean and clear condition for its age, while the volume is now very sound and quite smart in its new binding. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lima, Ciudad de los Reyes, Corte y Emporio del Imperio Peruano

First edition. The map was engraved to illustrate a rare work made for the beatification of Saint Alfonso de Mogrovejo (1538 - 1606) by Francisco Echave y Assu, La estrella de Lima  convertida en sol sobre sus tres coronas el B. Toribio Alfonso Mogrobexo. However, only a few copies of the plan appear to have been printed as the plan is almost always lacking on copies of the book. By the end of the 17th Century, Lima was an important city, both as the Capital of the Viceroyalty that controlled most of Spanish South America, and as a regional trading centre. Mulder's spectacular delineation of Lima surrounded by coats-of-arms, portraits of Saints, and animals, is the first engraved plan of Lima. It "is the first engraved plan of Lima", cited by Winsor. "This rare volume was unknown to Antonio," states Sabin who did not give the location of a copy and whose collation mentions neither the engraved portrait nor the plan." (Nebenzahl). In fact, according to Medina, only copy is known to have the map. Sabin, 21765 (for the book, not mentioning the map).

First and only edition of the Dutch translation of a philosophical overview of nature by Richard Bradley (1688-1732), examining minerals, flora and fauna, in an attempt to demonstrate their practical applications, particularly in agriculture. It also includes a description of infertile lands in England with suggestions for improvements, a description of gardens in Great Britain with improvements for the growing of fruit trees, and a chapter on the maintaining of grapevines. It was first published in English in 1721 as A philosophical account of the works of nature. The present edition is translated from the second English edition of 1739, which adds an appendix on fleas and lice, Flemish agriculture and some suggestions for speeding up the growing process of several crops."Bradley was a prolific science writer, ... His style was clear and readable, and his reputation immense; indeed, his publications did much to encourage a scientific approach to gardening and husbandry" (DSB).Minor dampstain on the bottom of the inner margins of the first 15 leaves and some leaves slightly browned.         Sud America [Chile, Peru]

published in Venice. 1688. - 42.7 x 29.3 cm, copper engraving. One of the EXTREMELY RARE GLOBE GORES depicting different parts of the world. Map shows the Western Coast line of South America, and a small vignette of native boats. This exceptional series of globe gores was originally engraved for a 110 cm. diameter terrestrial globe in 1688 - as here. They were subsequently reissued in individual sheet format in Coronelli's "Libro dei globi" and in his World Atlas Isolario in the 1690s. "Coronelli seems to have sought to omit nothing that might be of interest to geographers, navigators and explorers. There are an unusual number of legends, all explanatory and informative, but which never crowd the space available. Many of the vignettes of ships and fishing scenes throughout the world are worthy of separate reproduction. Coronelli makes comments on all the most important explorations and discoveries and undoubtedly had access to the findings of the French Academy of Sciences" [Shirley]. REFERENCE: R. Shirley: The Mapping of the World # 537 & pl. 376 A & B. Condition: with worm hole in margin, with some smudges and one foxing spot, with small water stain, not affecting plate.
