Almanacco per l'Anno Bisestile...dalla Natività di Christo MDCLXXXVIII

Extremely rare almanac for the year 1688 by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli. The work is dedicated to Abbot Rezzonico, whose portrait is in the upper left. Member of a famous family of Como, was elected governor of the Papal States, in 1687 he also assumed the title of patrician of Venice. This almanac, for each day of the year, remember the most important events related to the history of the Republic of Venice. The calendar is surrounded by a beautiful ornamental engraved frame, in the typical style of the Coronelli, where the coins are represented by plants of 24 cities of Greece, mostly in Morea, under the control of Venice. The work, a separate publication, was published by the workshop of Domenico Padoani, in Rialto. Coronelli had already made a similar work in 1666. The almanac is very rare and we have found only one example preserved in the Marciana of Venice. Copper engraving, in excellent condition. Venezia Venice 622 455

A decorative map showing the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor that extends from Rome in the west, Babylon in the east and to Cairo in the south. The eight illustrated cartouches each tell a biblical story. The story begins with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the Apostles beginning to spread the Christen faith. As part of this missionary work, Peter and John healed a lame man, a sinful man collapses at the feet of the Apostles and St. Stephen was stoned. At the bottom right the cartouche shows the episodes of the Apostle Paul. On his way to Damascus he met God, who took his sight. After arriving in Damascus, one of his disciples was cured by the laying of hands on his blindness, whereupon he converted to Christianity. As a missionary, Paul made three trips and they are numbered on the map up to 64. After finishing the third trip, he returned to Jerusalem where he was taken prisoner by Roman guards. He was then taken to Rome for his execution. His voyage is clearly illustrated on the map. The figures above the cartouches hold Christ's cross and the sword he was beheaded with in Rome. The center of the map in the black sea has the title cartouche and a mileage scale above it. Copper engraving, hand coloured, in very good condition. Dutch text on verso. Amsterdam Amsterdam 470 360

"It is the least developed among the Semitic languages, closest to Syriac, but coarser, even less sophisticated. The Samaritan population has greatly dwindled; their capital is Nablus in Palestine, but there are also some in Damascus, Cairo, Acre and other places. Their common language is Arabic" (cf. Vater/J.). The Utrecht philologian J. Leusden (1624-99) studied philosophy in his hometown, then focused on theology and the oriental languages. He was ordained as a preacher in 1649. He subsequently moved to Amsterdam, where he took instruction in Hebrew and Talmudic scholarship from various Jewish teachers, including one of Arabian descent, and thus acquired such learning that he succeeded to the Utrecht chair of Hebrew and Jewish Antiquities in 1651 (cf. Jöcher 2409). - Binding somewhat rubbed. Ownership "J. Venturi" (dated 1805) on title page. Vater/Jülg 323. Jöcher II, 2410. Jöcher/Adelung III, 1728, 4. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Nuova Guinea. Het Niew Hollandt. [Map of Northern Australia, Borneo, Indonesia and New Guinea].

(circa1697].. Black and white map, ornate initial letter and double columns of text in Italian below and on the reverse. Sheet size 49.2 x 35cm, map size 24.5 x 27.4/30cm. The map was first published in 1688 as a gore sheet, a map with curved edges, which together with other similarly shaped sheets, designed to be pasted together around a base to form a globe. It is probable that this sheet is from Cornonelli's "Isolario descrittione geographico-historica, sacro-profano, antico-moderna, politica, naturale e poetica..." which was published in Venice in 1696-1697 Very good copy. Tooley 352. Coronelli is particularly famous for his construction of terrestrial and celestial globes. His most famous globes were a large pair he made for Louis XIV. Coronelli’s talents were many. Born the son of a tailor in 1650, by the time of his death in 1718, he was a highly regarded theologian, mathematician and cartographer as well as having risen through the Franciscan order to become General of the Order. Over his career he produced over 500 maps and globes and founded Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti the first geographical society. This gore sheet shows Northern Australia (from the Kimberley to the coast beyond Arnhem Land) with delightful depictions of an elephant, deer and other unlikely images of the land and its inhabitants. An important map of northern Australia, this map also offers a very interesting depiction of the section of Southeast Asia from Borneo's east coast to the western part of New Guinea, together with the islands of south-east Indonesia. .

Doron medicum: or, A supplement to the new London dispensatory : In three books. Containing a supplement I. To the materia medica. II. To the internal compound medicaments. III. To the external compound medicaments

London : Printed for, and sold by T. Dawks, T. Basset, R. Chiswell, M. Wotton, and G. Conyers, 1688-01-01. Hardcover. Good. Full leather binding. Nice English polished calf. 2nd ed. Front hinge has a small crack. Collated: [14], 776, [56] pages. Early signature of William Perry and Sam White. Pages are generally clean and unmarked. Printed in two columns. William Salmon was a self described "Professor of Physick(s)". Salmon combined medicine with alchemy and has been politely referred to as a medical empiric, and less politely as a charlatan and quack. Needless to say, Salmon was a highly successful author of medical texts, with many of his works printed in multiple editions. (You must appreciate his entry for Elixer of Virginia Snake root (Exilir Radicis Serpentariae), p. 503. It appears many of the medicines may have been lifted from a Hogwort's potions textbook or the stores of St Mungo's Hospital. i.e. Pulvis Antipestilentialis, a powder against the plague, p. 638. Hermione Granger, eat your heart out!) "Salmon was one of the earliest and most successful writers on popular science and medicine. He had little or no scientific or medical background but nevertheless became very successful and had an impressive career as a self-styled physician. His personal library contained several thousand items, and he wrote widely on a variety of subjects. His remedies enjoyed great popularity and included "Cordial Drops," "Balsam," "Elixir of Life," and "Family Pills," all of which acquired a great reputation." - Heirs of Hippocrates 654.         A DISQUISITION ABOUT THE FINAL CAUSES OF NATURAL THINGS

London: Printed by H. C. for John Taylor, 1688. FIRST EDITION, issue with cancel title y. One of the last works published in Boyle's lifetime, this rare and significant title by one of the most creative and prolific scientists of the 17th century provides a good example of both the author's breadth of intellectual inquiry and his deeply held interest in theology and philosophy. The youngest of the 14 children of the earl of Cork, Boyle (1627-91) was one of the founders of the Royal Society and a most active member throughout his life. He published many significant books and treatises, did much original work in chemistry, helped to develop a celebrated vacuum pump, and propounded "Boyle's Law," which formulated the important relationship between the pressure and volume of gases. Despite having suffered a major stroke in 1670, Boyle continued to experiment and write intensively through to the end of his life. His later writings, particularly those produced in the 1680s and including the present work, are often characterized in two ways: they may include forays into the world of medicine, and they also reflect a profound piety and respect for the divine. The present book is of considerable interest as a medical work. At the same time, the main essay presents the author's thoughts on the relationship between theology and the work of natural philosophers, and is often regarded as Boyle's endorsement of teleological inference (today more commonly referred to as "intelligent design"). In Fulton's words, on the medical side, "the volume is replete with allusions indicating [Boyle's] powers of observation as a naturalist and there are many references to physiology; perhaps the most interesting is the record of a conversation with William Harvey on how he discovered the circulation of the blood . . . . Appended to the 'Disquisition' is a brief tract on disturbances of vision; Boyle describes cataract, and was aware of the location of the opacity. A variety of case histories are recorded, drawn from his own experience, and the tract appears to be one of the first in which this method of teaching was employed in an ophthalmological treatise." In all, there are 14 ophthalmological case histories given, including exophthalmic ophthalmoplegia and other degenerative and trauma-related conditions.. 180 x 110 mm. (7 x 4 1/4"). [xvi], 96, 81-112, 129-274, [6] pp. (with numerous pagination errors, but complete). FIRST EDITION, issue with cancel title. Contemporary sprinkled calf, rolled panels with a floral tool in each corner, neatly rebacked, raised bands with morocco spine label and unobtrusive paper library label near the foot. Fulton 186A; Heirs of Hippocrates 367; Wellcome II, 224; Wing B-3946. A few small dings to the boards, extremities a little rubbed, one clean two-inch tear in the middle of one leaf (due to paper flaw) affecting a couple of letters, two smaller marginal tears (one affecting three lines of text), otherwise a really excellent copy, clean and fresh in a sturdy binding. There is a small hole in top margin of the title leaf to the second part. Contents are a bit toned in margins and partly a little spotted. A fine copy. Praetorius (c. 1635-1707), born in Memel, Lutheran theologician and historian, converted to Catholicism in 1684 and was in 1685 appointed historiographer to the king of Poland, to whom the work is dedicated. In this historical and ethnographical work, which was much critizised by contemporary historians, Praetorius attempts to prove that the Slavic peoples are of Gothic origin, thus extending the geographical claims of the Polish crown to include Prussia. ''[Praetorius] constructed a suitable Gothic-Slavic identity for Prussia on the basis of the similarities between the Gothic, old Prussian and Slavonic languages. His Sarmatian Goths included the Bohemians, the Mecklenburgers, Cashubians, Prussians and the Pomeranians. For his work he was rewarded in Poland with the title Historicus Serenissimae Majestatis Regiae.'' (Karen Friedrich: The Other Prussia. Royal Prussia, Poland and Liberty, 1569-1772, pp. 91-92).         Examen libri pontificalis, sive vitarum romanorum pontificum; quae sub nomine Anastasii bibliothecarii circumferuntur ...

Romae: Joannis Jacobi Komarek 4to. [8] ff., 120, 119, [1] pp.. 1688 [also bound in, the same author's] Parergon ad examen libri pontificalis, sive, epistola Pii II. ad Carolum VII. regem Franciae ab haereticis deprauata, & à Launoiana calumnia vindicata.... Romae: Joannis Jacobi Komarek, 1688. 4to. 39 pp. Giovanni Ciampini (1633–98) studied law and was subsequently appointed "Magister" at the Apostolic Chancery, thus providing him with a secure job (i.e., sinecure) and allowing him to devote himself to scholarship, as for example, here in his studies of papal biographies and the letters from Pius II to Charles II of France. Both works are printed in roman type with large woodcut initials featuring cherubs and each has its title-page printed in black and red. The Examen is divided into two parts, each with its own collation and pagination, with the second part being "Sanctae romanae ecclesiae bibliothecariorum catalogus, iuxta chronologicum ordinem. . . ." Evidence of readership: In the first part of the Examen an early reader has underlined in sepia ink passages or phrases s/he found significant but added no marginalia. Contemporary vellum. Bookplate removed from front pastedown. Very good copies of both titles. Evidence of readership as above.

Maastricht antieke plattegrond - De Wit, 1688.

Plattegrond Maastricht - "Traiectum ad Mosam vulgo Maestricht"'Kopergravure uitgegeven door Frederick de Wit in 1688. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. Prijs: € 1.650,- (BTW margeregeling).
