Onna shoreishu [trans.: Collection of Rules of Etiquette for Women]

Numerous full-page woodcuts. Seven parts in six vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers (rubbed & a little worn), orig. title slips on upper covers, modern stitching. N.p.: 1688. Fourth edition (1st ed.: 1660); all early editions are very rare. Copies which appear on the market are usually incomplete and in bad condition; our set is in fine condition. This was the standard book of the 17th century on the role and responsibilities of female servants in upper-class society and in the household. The anonymous author wrote this work to instruct these women servants in matters of highly refined etiquette required in royal, aristocratic, and wealthy households. Topics include proper attire, how to assist at festivals and weddings, how to treat the belongings of the servants' mistresses, how to care for and teach etiquette to children, travel customs, etc. This work offers an intimate and rather unique view of customs and conduct within upper-class households. There are instructions on correct eating decorum; suggestions for seasonal attire, courtship and wedding rituals, wedding receptions, menus for weddings and other celebrations, transporting the dowery, how to prepare the room for delivering a baby, celebrations relating to the milestones in a child's life, etc. The fine illustrations have sometimes been attributed to Hishikawa Moronobu but there is no convincing proof, save the style, which is reminiscent of his work. A fine set, with some mostly marginal and unimportant worming. WorldCat locates no copy of this edition. ? See the Nara Women's University on-line site for an account of the contents of this book.

        The Character of a Trimmer

London, 1688. First edition. [4], 43, [blank] pp. Small 4to. Modern green quarter morocco over buckram, spine gilt. First edition. [4], 43, [blank] pp. Small 4to. "In January, Halifax had anonymously distributed three manuscript copies of The Character of a Trimmer, one to the archbishop of Canterbury with a letter asking him to deliver it to the king. It circulated in manuscript until pirated for publication in 1688 ... Tory journalists had been denouncing trimmers, a supposed third party of neutrals and traitors, in order to intimidate moderate tories and Anglicans who did not support thorough repression of whigs and dissenters. Halifax's pamphlet, ostensibly a defence of the centre against both extremes, was designed to undermine tory support for repression at home and inaction abroad. It argued that ruling in accordance with the laws was in the interest of both prince and people; that the Church of England was best served by comprehension of protestant dissenters or some leniency towards them (less towards Catholic laymen, and only to promote conversions); and that the balance of power was in the national interest. For tactical reasons Halifax both understated his sympathy for protestant dissenters and refrained from stating outright his conviction that Charles was secretly a Catholic and still in the pay of Louis XIV" (ODNB).         Historia general de las conquistas del Nuevo Reyno de Granada.

Amberes (Antwerp), Jean Baptiste Verdussen, [1688]. Folio (29.7 x 20.9 cm). Title page, three finely engraved plates (title page and frontispieces preceding chapters) by J. Mulder, [xvi], 599, [vii] pp. Contemporary vellum. Spine with contemporary script title.= A very rare work, in a very good contemporary binding, by the Spanish writer, bishop, and gouvernor of Panamá, Lucas Fernández [de] Piedrahíta (1624-1688). According to Sabin (vol. 15, p. 97) this is "a work of the highest importance for the early history of New Grenada". The work deals with the conquest of the Americas by the Spanish. It is particularly interesting because of the descriptions of the habits of the indigenous people of the Viceroyalty of New Granada" (present-day Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, southwestern Surinam, parts of northwestern Brazil, northern Peru, Costa Rica and Nicaragua). It also contains a detailed history of the Spanish invaders in the area up to the year 1563. Piedrahíta was born in Bogotá, and probably partly of Indian descent. He became a bishop and was captured, tortured, and later released by the famous English pirate Sir Henry Morgan after sacking the town of Santa Marta. The finely engraved title pages show battle scenes, and both the foremost Indian (chapter one) and Spanish (chapter three) leaders. Old, short annotation on the half title, rear flyleaf with some marginal paper loss, a few skilful paper repairs. "The work in any condition is very rare" (Field). Only very few copies came to auction over the past 45 years and this is definitely the one in the best condition. A fine copy. Field 1215; Sabin, 62704.

Paradise Lost A Poem in Twelve Books

London: Printed by Miles Flesher for Richard Bentley.., 1688. Fourth edition overall, first illustrated and first folio edition. Folio (pages measure: 322 x 195 mm), collating: [4], 343, [7]. Complete with a frontispiece portrait of Milton and 12 plates, mainly by J B Medina. Contemporary full speckled calf; outer joints repaired, new red morocco spine label added. A Very Good copy overall, but with a few issues. Side margins a bit tight on the plates, but not entering the plate. A few leaves appear to have come out and been reinserted (or possibly from another first edition copy) at B1-B2 and F2-F4. One plate misbound, facing 175 rather than 179. Leaf Dd3 with long tear (entering the text) now professionally closed, without loss of words. Periodic light to moderate staining, some browning to leaves, particularly those adjacent to the plates. While not a perfect copy, this one is complete (with the frontis), in a contemporary binding, and priced competitively. Milton's magisterial epic, considered one of the finest works in the English language. According to Samuel Johnson Paradise Lost was "…a poem which...with respect to design may claim the first place, and with respect to performance, the second, among the productions of the human mind." Milton was in his late fifties - and blind - when the book was composed and so wrote the work almost entirely through dictation. He worked through incredible hardship, coping with the physical illness, gout, as well as the death of his young daughter and wife. Interestingly enough, Milton did not intend at first to write a poem about Satan and the creation of man but rather about King Arthur. Despite its genius, the book did not become immediately popular until the 1688 edition. It was the first edition that was accompanied by illustrations and one of the earliest copies of a book to be sold by subscription. Most of the plates were by John Baptist Medina, and the ones depicting Satan surveying his kingdom and the rebel angels in his court are particularly vivid and notable.         Vera, e distinta Relatione Dell?Horribile, e Spaventoso Terremoto Accaduto in Napoli, e in più parti del Regno il giorno 5. Giugno 1688. Co?l numero delle Città, Terre, e altri luoghi rovinati. Come anco delli morti, e feriti rimasti in così compassionevole tragedia. Naples, Domenico Antonio Parrino, 1688

4° (202x146 mm). [4] ll. On l. A2r woodcut headpiece and decorative initial. Modern boards, green morocco title label on spine. A few small stains, otherwise an excellent copy. Rare narrative account of one of the most damaging historical earthquakes occurred in Naples, published shortly after the ?dreadful and terrible? event on 5 June 1688 and written by the printer himself, Domenico Antonio Parrino. ?The quake struck Naples in the early evening when many people were walking in the porto area seeking cool air. Numerous buildings in the city were destroyed; the church of San Paolo Maggiore lost most of its facade [?] the dome of Gesù Nuovo, the main Jesuit church was ruined [?] The 1688 earthquake, it was widely believed, was a punishment by God for the sins of Naples, and a graphic reminder of the mysterious ways Providence cares for us? (H. S. Stone, Vico?s Cultural History, p. 9). On title is stamped the price of the pamphlet, ?Si vende un grano l?una?. An English translation of this short account was printed in London in 1688. Mainly concerned with the Turkish Wars in Europe (and also mentions the campaigns in southern Greece from 1684 to 1688).       1688. 8vo. (24), 255, (1) pp. Contemp. calf with gilt spine; leading edges gilt. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of this Syriac textbook, including one of the earliest investigations of the Samararitan language and script. The Samaritan population has greatly dwindled; their capital is Nablus in Palestine, but there are also some in Damascus, Cairo, Acre and other places. Their common language is Arabic" (cf. Vater/J.). The Utrecht philologian J. Leusden (1624-99) studied philosophy in his hometown, then focused on theology and the oriental languages. He was ordained as a preacher in 1649. He subsequently moved to Amsterdam, where he took instruction in Hebrew and Talmudic scholarship from various Jewish teachers, including one of Arabian descent, and thus acquired such learning that he succeeded to the Utrecht chair of Hebrew and Jewish Antiquities in 1651 (cf.         The Character of a Trimmer.

London - 1688, 1688 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A early edition of The Character of a Trimmer Re-bound in quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards and gilt lettering. Early edition. Although published under Coventry's name, the authorship of the work was acknowledged by Lord Halifax to whom it is generally ascribed. Cf. DNB and BM. COPAC. Of Halifaxs authorship, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us, Halifax had anonymously distributed three manuscript copies of The Character of a Trimmer, one to the archbishop of Canterbury with a letter asking him to deliver it to the king. It circulated in manuscript until pirated for publication in 1688. In it he alluded to policies that he had opposed in council; the genre of a character and arguments balanced on the notion of the golden mean enabled him to do so without betraying his authorship, which he disclosed after 1688. George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax PC,1633 1695, was an English statesman, writer, and politician. He was nephew of Sir William Coventry, who is said to have influenced his political opinions. He entered public life with all the advantages of lineage, political connections, great wealth and estates, and uncommon abilities. Of his literary life, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states, Halifax was better known as a politician than an author. His eight publications, five of which were first circulated in manuscript, were all anonymous and of his political and private opinions, in an age when radical ideas in religion and politics threatened the traditional structure of society in which Halifax was exalted, he could be cynical about the ideology of both the established church and the monarchy while remaining sincerely devoted to preservation of the status quo. Halifax could afford political outspokenness and independence. Of Halifax's pamphlet, and the political situations it describes, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography explains, Tory journalists had been denouncing trimmers, a supposed third party of neutrals and traitors, in order to intimidate moderate tories and Anglicans who did not support thorough repression of whigs and dissenters. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is almost no wear to the extremities. Internally the pages are bright with the very occasional spot, and stains to the first and last few pages, as shown above. Overall the condition is very good..

[MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT, SIGNED, FROM SIR EDMUND ANDROS, APPOINTING A LIEUTENANT OF MILITIA IN ALBANY IN 1688]

Albany, 1688. Broadside, 8 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches. Original folds, mild foxing and toning. Very good. With remnants of original seal. Matted and framed. An early colonial military appointment signed by Sir Edmund Andros as Captain General and Governor of the Dominion of New England. Here Andros appoints Johannes Bensingh to the rank of lieutenant of the Company of Foot in the Albany County Militia. Andros was colonial governor of New York, Virginia, and Maryland, though wildly unpopular for his Anglican leadership. Eventually Andros would be overthrown as a colonial authority in the 1689 Boston revolt, which took place just the year after this document was written. Andros would be recalled to England in 1698, and serve out his days as he had spent them before going to North America, as bailiff of the island of Guernsey. Manuscripts of any type signed by Andros are rare in the market.

Graz, Selbstverlag (gedruckt von Widmannstätter), 1688 - 10 Bll., 599 S., 13 Bll. (Index). 1 doppelblattgr. Kupfertafel. Brunet I, 1135).Bon exemplaire, bien relié.
