Chardin, Jean.
– Henze I, 558; Cox I, 250; Schwab 87; vgl. Dinse 445 (Ausg. Amsterdam 1686); vgl.

She holds in her right hand a 'cor ardens', a heart with a flame on top, which symbolizes burning love. In his 'Vita Nuova' 3 the Italian poet Dante tells about a dream, in which such a heart serves as a link between him and his beloved Beatrice Portinari. (Translate 'scarlet', 'Blutrot' in German') He recognizes Beatrice. This scene refers Catullus and Lesbia, the woman under whose spell he fell, to Cynthia and Propertius, and to Tibullus and his love Delia. The other woman on the title symbolizes Poetry. She wears a laurel wreath on her head, in her right hand she holds a caduceus, by the power of which she enchantes all nature, in her left hand she holds a sheet of paper) (Condition: Vellum slightly soiled and age-toned. MEDRANO, Sebastian Fernandez de
Don Franciso de Afferden. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 7.5" x 11.25". Page measures 10.25" x 13". Map cut to neat line and affixed to page. Stamp on verso. This fascinating double-hemisphere world map speaks to the progress of Spanish empire in the late 17th century, both geographically and intellectually. Produced within the context of attempts to revive the empire's military power through the application of science, the map employs symbolic imagery and language to suggest Spain's return to dominance. A regal lion presides over the two hemispheres, draped with a ribbon that advises its reader in Latin to "temper his nobility with natural fierceness": in short, to be willing to work hard for success. Fernández de Medrano served, as director of the aforementioned Academy, considerable activity, dedicating himself, as he himself says, "to more amplify the faculty to print various works of fortification, geometry, formation of battalions, use and practice of artillery and mortars and with time geography and navigation, and all at the expense of the poor patrimony of my wife and both number of engineers were created". Under the direction of Fernández de Medrano, which he held until his death, the Academy of Brussels became a prestigious military training center. His works include a Spanish version of "many curious propositions elevated" Euclid's elements; artillery: practical gunner, reprinted with the gunner consolidated under the title of the bombardment perfecto and practical text, the latter reprinted several times; a grea … [Click Below for Full Description]

A good copy. ¦ First Edition in English of the Encyclopaedia medicinae theoretico-practicae by Johann Dolaeus (1651-1707), which originally appeared at Frankfurt-am-Main in 1684. This compendium draws from the ancient classics of Hippocrates and Galen, as well as the modern works of Paracelsus, Jean Baptiste van Helmont, Thomas Willis, Frans de la Boe, and Descartes. ¦ The polymath William Salmon (1644-1713) became Òone of the earliest and most successful writers on popular science and medicineÓ (Heirs of Hippocrates), producing translations and compendia in the areas of anatomy, surgery, pharmacology, botany, mathematics, astrology and alchemy. His fine library of over 3500 books was dispersed at his death in a series of sales by Thomas Ballard. Upon the testimony of the auction catalogue, Ferguson judged Salmon Òa man of erudition, and of wide and liberal tastes... a thoroughgoing bibliophileÓ(Bibl. Chemica II, p.319). THIERS Jean-Baptiste
- Chez Antoine Dezallier, A Paris 1686, In-12 (9x16cm), (40) 481pp. (3), relié. - originale, insolito Edition. Legatura in pieno dopo Roan maculato e ca ghiaccio 1800. indietro con i nervi decorati. come Allegato pelle rossa. Prima staccata piatto. Cappellini e mascella strofinato. Angoli leggermente urtato. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale, rare. [Click Below for Full Description]
