Cologne, Jean Jacques le Jeune, 1686.12mo.Contemporary vellum. 142 pp.First edition. - History of the 1686 siege and re-capture of Buda, under Turkish rule since 1541, by Duke Charles V of Lorraine and Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria. An English edition was published in London in 1687 (?) An historical description of the glorious conquest of the city of Buda, the captial city of the kingdom of Hungary, by the victorious arms of the thrice illustrious and invinciple Emperor Leopold I. Under the conduct of his Most Serene Highness, the Duke of Lorraine, and the Elector of Bavaria ...A day by day account of the Allied advance on Buda and Pest in Hungary, resulting in the withdrawal of the Ottoman garisson and a Treaty of Peace. The wry joke "the operation was successful, but the patient died" might describe the liberation of Buda and Pest by the united Christian armies in 1686. The two towns were utterly destroyed, with only a few thousand people remaining alive inside the walls by the time the Turks were vanquished. Having survived the Turkish period intact, the royal palace was destroyed in the siege. Resettlement and rebuilding were gradual, and formerly Gothic Buda took on a decidedly baroque appearance during the process. Though it would never again be a royal seat, the palace was rebuilt and expanded over the years. Hungary was to be ruled by the victorious House of Habsburg until the collapse of the Habsburg empire in World War I. - Extremely rare, unrecorded variant. Not in Apponyi.

EXQUEMELIN, Alexandre Olivier
1686. "Go tell the King of England, go tell him thus from me, Though he reigns king o'er all the land, I will reign king at sea!" - Exquemelin, History of the Buccaneers An incredible History of Pirates and Buccaneers of the Caribbean by Exquemelin, complete with illustrations! This book of sea adventures talks of shipwrecks, sea battles, and Spanish buccaneers in the Americas, Indies, and South Sea. In 1666, Exquemelin set sail toward the Antilles when his ship was attacked by pirates headed for Tortuga. He, himself, eventually became a pirate and participated in raids and lootings. This incredible first French edition describes many of Exquemelin's stories and includes highly desirable illustrations of maps and scenes of sailing. Augmented and edited by Journel, this book is known to be responsible for colloquializing the term 'buccaneer'. From Sabin: First French edition, of extreme rarity, translated from the Spanish. The author's name is rather singularly changed. The translation was made by M. de Fontignieres.". [Attributes: First Edition]

Cologne, Jean Jacques le Jeune, 1686.12mo.Modern marbled boards. 190 pp.History of the 1686 siege and re-capture of Buda, under Turkish rule since 1541, by Duke Charles V of Lorraine and Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria. An English edition was published in London in 1687 (?) An historical description of the glorious conquest of the city of Buda, the captial city of the kingdom of Hungary, by the victorious arms of the thrice illustrious and invinciple Emperor Leopold I. Under the conduct of his Most Serene Highness, the Duke of Lorraine, and the Elector of Bavaria .A day by day account of the Allied advance on Buda and Pest in Hungary, resulting in the withdrawal of the Ottoman garisson and a Treaty of Peace. - (Titlepage restored).Extremely rare, unrecorded variant. Not in Apponyi. COPPIN, Jean.
Lyon, Antoine Briasson, 1686. Modern boards. With 4 engraved plans. (8),496,(6) pp.First edition, another edition was published in the same year, and a third edition appeared in 1720 reprinting only the accounts of voyages. Jean Coppin (c.1615-c.1690) has writen an account of his journeys long after the fact, together with his attemps to spread his ideas of a new crusade. Coppin had first travelled to Egypt in 1638 where he spent two years. He later travelled to Tunis and Syria. In 1644 he was named consul at Damietta and he spent three years there. He returned to Europe in the hope of persuading the Pope to agree to a new crusade (Blackmer p. 85).The original work appeared in 1656, under the title Bouclier de l' Europe. In this reprint, the title has been changed: the title of the first edition has become the title of the first chapter, and the title of the second part of the first edition has become the title of this second edition. This change can be explained by the fact that his idea to form a crusade wasn't really relevant anymore 30 years later, so Coppin put the emphasis on his voyages. - (Some staining). Parker and Guy
1686 ENORMOUS Holy BIBLE Oxford Theater Parker & Guy King James II English England Holy Bibles from the 17th-century are generally considered quite rare, especially those published at Oxford. English Bibles from the 1600s are quite popular today because of their historical significance, as well as unmistakable beauty. This 1686, Oxford-published Bible was printed by Parker and Guy and features a charming, illustrated general title page dated 1686. (not to be confused with others printed the same year but dated 1685. This edition features an ‘alter’ on the copper plate, with a noticeable change from 1685 to 1686.) Peter Parker and Thomas Guy were hired to be book sellers in attempts to defy the King’s Printer; however, in order for this and other Oxford Bibles to be printed, they had to meet a strict guide set by the precincts of Oxford University, one of which meant the inclusion of a dedicatory note to King James II. ANON.
First English edition of 'Essais nouveaux de Morale de l'Ame de l'Homme. Par M.***, Paris: Veuve Maucroy, 1686'. A second edition of this translation was published in 1690. ESTC locates only six copies in the British Isles and three in North America (Clark Library, Library of Congress, University of Iowa). We have not been able to identify the author. One national library catalogue lists the French original as being by Nicolas Malebranche, but the leading specialist who read this translation for us says it is definitely not: "It lacks the sort of vigorous dialectical cut-and-thrust that engages our interest in Malebranche's own exchanges with critics such as Arnauld and Regis. This author clearly knows his Descartes and his Malebranche, is more or less up-to-speed with 17th-century natural philosophy (e.g. in his accounts of the sense-organs), and is firmly in the Augustinian tradition in his theology. But he has made a clearly deliberate choice *not* to name contemporary thinkers and *not* to go into any depth or detail on the issues that divide, say, Descartes from the Thomists, or Malebranche from Desgabets or Arnauld. So it’s not entirely easy to place him, except to say that he is clearly deeply influenced by Malebranche, and is perhaps trying to give us a sort of popular presentation of Malebranche’s views in a manner that can pass the censor and not wind up on the Index (where Malebranche’s own books ended up)".
