SIAMESE AMBASSADORS IN PARIS]
Toulouse: Chez Jean Boude, 1686. Soft cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 8 pp. Bound in marbled wrappers and housed in a fine red morocco case. $3850 Extremely rare first and only edition of this detailed popular newsletter concerning the contemporary reception of three Siamese ambassadors in Paris in September of 1686. The report gives a full description of their entrance, their itinerary, and the names and qualities of the individual ambassadors - whose 9-month stay in northern France between 1686 and 1687 must have provoked enormous interest. Providing the reader with some background, the work notes that the King of Siam, having been only recently convinced of the greatness of Louis XIV and the French nation, has decided to send three more mandarins as envoys. "Ces Mandarins sont tres-honnestes, les meilleures gens du monde, doux, civils, & complaisans, de tres-bonne & agreeable humeur .". According to this account, they arrived at Brest on the 18th of June and reached Paris only on the 12th August. On the 'first day of this month of September', the delegation was officially presented to Louis XIV. Its centerpiece was the King of Siam's letter to Louis, written on a blade of gold encased in a golden boëte (bottle?) and poised atop a golden chalice, all of which was carried aloft on a machine by 12 Swiss guards. The ambassadors themselves, it is recorded, took care to cover the machine with their parasols. Upon meeting the king, "ils firent une profonde reverence en leur maniere, se prosterant, & mettant leurs mains sur leur vissage". The gifts p … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOYM, Michel (or Michal Piotor)
Six engraved plates & one woodcut in the text. 144 pp. Small 4to, modern half-vellum & marbled boards (some browning throughout due to the quality of the paper). [Nuremberg]: 1686. First separate edition of the complete texts which are "translations of Chinese treatises on pulse medicine with illustrations of hands and wrists to illustrate pulse-taking. The texts published here are different from those published by Cleyer [in 1682]."-Garrison-Morton 6492.1. This is the third earliest western book on Chinese medicine, preceded only by Les Secrets de la Medicine des Chinois (1671) and Cleyer's book in 1682. In this posthumously published work, edited by Cleyer, Boym describes Chinese traditional medicine and introduces several methods of healing and diagnostics previously unknown in Europe, particularly measurement of the pulse. Boym (1612-59), was a Polish scientist, explorer and a Jesuit missionary to China. He is notable as one of the first westerners to travel within the Chinese mainland and was the author of numerous works on Asian fauna, flora and geography. These texts first appeared in the Misc. cur. Acad. Nat. Cur. of Nuremberg (Dec. II, 4, 1686), pp. 1-144. Very good copy and quite rare. Old engraved bookplate. ❧ Hagelin, Rare and Important Medical Books in the Library of the Swedish Society of Medicine, pp. 91-93. .

CONFUCIUS
Paris,: Andrea Cramoisy for Daniel Horthemels, 1686-, 1687.. Small folio, folding engraved portrait of Confucius and folding engraved map of China, several engraved headpieces and initials, some small stamps and early manuscript annotation on front free endpaper; a fine copy in 18th-century tree calf, fine gilt border on boards, spine richly gilt with crimson label. The first European printing of the works of Confucius. As Lowendahl points out, 'by one of the stranger ironies of history, Europe first learned of Confucius from Jesuits who had been sent out to convert the "heathen" Chinese'.This important compendium was 'the first systematic and comprehensive presentation of Confucianism' (Knud Lundbaek), and includes the first ever translation into Latin of The Analects, the fundamental Confucian text and the very basis of Chinese scholarship. The work is also known for its significant map representing the provinces of China, and indicating the centres of missionary activity. There is besides an attractive image of Confucius in a stylised library, the walls lined with books bearing the titles of some of his classic works. The large characters at the top read 'National Academy of Learning' and those bracketing the arch 'Confucius, the First Teacher under Heaven'.In many ways the modern era of European contact with China began in 1601, when the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci arrived in the Chinese capital to establish a Catholic mission. The reports of Ricci and his colleagues were widely published, with many, like this, produced in Paris, a centre for the Jesuits. Although Europ … [Click Below for Full Description]

TERRA ROSSA, Vitale
Padua,: per il Cadorino,, 1686.. Quarto, with a portrait of the author; a few light stains, a small wormhole and repaired tear in the half-title, but an excellent copy in 19th-century marbled boards, rebacked, with the bookplate of "Bibliotheca Veneta Car. Frid. Guilelm Brose MDCCCLXXII". Rare, important and little-known early work on the southern continent, summarising early geographical knowledge and drawing on Marco Polo and others to sing the praises of Italian, and specifically Venetian explorers: Terrarossa 'attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis...' (Hiatt, Terra Incognita, p. 261).This is the first issue of the first edition of this rare work, identified by the imprint with the privilege "del serenissimo principe" and dated 1686 (the same sheets were also issued with the imprint date altered to 1687 and the privilege "del serenissimo senato").Terra Rossa concentrates extensively on Terra Australis (which he proposes calling Terra Australe Magallanica, in honour of Magellan), mostly with reference to Marco Polo, and considerable importance is attached to Marco Polo's "Beach, provincia aurifera" (Beach, the gold-bearing province), a promontory of the hypothetical Terra Australis Incognita, which became an important feature in maps of the period after Mercator first featured it on his sixteenth-century maps (specifically citing Marco Polo as his source). By the mid-seventeenth century, it had become a regular (if moveable) part of attempts to reconcile it with the fragments of coastline … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Dibner 125; Norman 1272.

"In 1686 died the Father of Aeronautics, Fr. Francesco Lana-Terzi, SJ, professor of physics and mathematics at Brescia. Histories of flight refer to his work Prodromo dell'Arte Maestra (1670) as the first publication to establish a theory of aerial navigation verified by mathematical accuracy and clearness of perception...

"Lana's bold project was based on mathematical calculations and principles of physics. His work was translated by the physicist Robert Hooke in 1690 and was discussed by scientists throughout Europe for a century. It is no exaggeration to say that Lana's ideas lay behind the development of the balloon and led to the successful flight of the Montgolfier brothers in 1783...

"At the beginning of Lana's ambitious project, a compilation of all science, is a collection of the recent inventions. Many of these are his own, such as a sewing machine, a reading device for the blind, a language for deaf and dumb, long-distance communication by cannon, a heavier-than-air flying chariot and finally his lighter-than-air aerial ship. For the latter he drew on the recently invented vacuum pump of Boyle, the experiments of Hooke, Torricelli and Otto von Guericke who demonstrated at Magdaburg that atmospheric pressure is so strong that it would take two teams of eight horses to pull apart an evacuated sphere. Lana proposed using the princ … [Click Below for Full Description]
