Chaumont, (Alexandre de.)
Paris., 1686.. b/w engraved plates, some folding. Chaumont traveled to Siam in 1685 as Louis XIV’s ambassador. The ostensible purpose of the embassy was to convert the King of Siam to Catholicism, but Chaumont and his Jesuit staff collected much valuable information about the commerce, science, history and religion of the land. Apparently there were two editions of Chaumont’s work. This first edition has six plates, two of which fold. A second edition has different pagination and eight plates. Worldcat cites only the second edition. BMC Cat. Vol V cites this edition and a second 1686 edition published in Amsterdam. Cox cites the English translation and is unaware of this 1686 French edition. Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands and gilt spine decoration. Cracking and wear to covers, but still solidly bound, with text and plates clean.

Contemporary blind pressed vellum, small split on upper cover hinge. A fine copy of the rare first edition of the first large work on fishes in England, marking a new era in ichthyology. The text was printed at the expense of bishop John Fell (founder of the University Press), the plates engraved by Paul van Somers under the supervision of Martin Lister at the expense of several members of the Royal Society of London, among them particularly the Society's president Samuel Pepys to whom the work is dedicated. Randolph, Bernard:
London. 1686.. [2],26pp. Dbd. Contemporary notations and stains on titlepage. Moderate wear and foxing. Irregularly trimmed, shaving a few letters at foredge of leaf C4. Good. First printed in 1686 in two editions, the present London edition and an edition in Oxford. Blackmer argues that the Oxford edition should have precedence, though both editions are relatively scarce, and this London edition is known in fewer copies. This London edition includes a description of Cerigo, not found in the Oxford edition. Randolph's description of the Morea, also known as the Peloponnesus, is a valuable account of southern mainland Greece, based on his own firsthand observations while a merchant there. He describes several important port cities, their attributes, suitability for commerce, and the quality of life there for the Greek and Turkish residents. "By 1664 he was living in Smyrna and he traded extensively through the Aegean region of the Ottoman empire until after 1680. Between 1683 and 1684 he travelled three times to Massachusetts to assist his elder brother Edward as deputy collector of customs. Back in England he published in 1686 The Present State of the Morea, a brief account of the port cities of the Peloponnese" - DNB. Blackmer praises the work for its accuracy: "Randolph writes from the point of view of a merchant rather than an antiquary, from personal observation of actual conditions, prompted by his economic interests. The Venetian invasion of the Morea had just occurred and possibly this event prompted Randolph to set down what he knew of the area." Blackmer owned … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Esquemeling; Oexmelin] Exquemelin, Alexander Olivier
Paris, 1686. The rare first French edition, of what´s arguably the most influential buccaneering account; from the Hamsworth library. 1686. Paris. Jacques Lefebvre. Two volumes in 12mo (164 mm x 87 mm). 1 [blank] + 15 ff. + 342 + 12 ff. + 1 [blank]; 1 [blank] + 3 ff. + 384 + 12 ff. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, richly gilt and lettered, worn but still an attractive binding in its original condition. A fine copy, gently browned as often and with a few foxing spots, second title water stained, short tears to folding plates. First French edition. Besides its rarity, this edition is also important for its illustrations don´t derive from either the Dutch original or two earliest English editions. The translation was prepared by Frontigniéres, from Exquemelin´s own manuscript; the first edition in all was published in Dutch in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. The success was immediate, translations followed and editions continued until the 18th century. Exquemelin (1645 - 1707) was a French Huguenot, in 1666 made sale towards the Antilles, his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates and after reaching Tortuga he was apparently sold to a local who subsequently sold to a surgeon of some sort, he would teach him his office and eventually grant him his freedom against payment. At an uncertain date, Exquemelin became a privateer; as a pirate, he participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669 and that of Panama in 1670 under Morgan. His experiences and observations were concentrated in his memoires. The detail with which Exquemelin describes the lootings, … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLUGHBY, F.
Oxonii, e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1686. Folio (367 x 245mm). With 1 engraved frontispiece, 1 engraved title-vignette and 187 engraved plates. Contemporary blind pressed vellum, small split on upper cover hinge. A fine copy of the rare first edition of the first large work on fishes in England, marking a new era in ichthyology. Although Ray states with his characteristic modesty to be only the editor of the manuscript of his deceased friend Willughby (1635-1672), his share in compiling the material for the work should not be neglected. The text was printed at the expense of bishop John Fell (founder of the University Press), the plates engraved by Paul van Somers under the supervision of Martin Lister at the expense of several members of the Royal Society of London, among them particularly the Society's president Samuel Pepys to whom the work is dedicated.Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Falkenhof.Dean III, 331; Keynes 46; Nissen, 'Schöne Fischbücher', 130. Blaeu 1686 - Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1686. [Click Below for Full Description]

London: B. Tooke, T. Passenger [et al. ], 1686. Best and last edition, with additions, corrections and a geographical index by Nicholas Lloyd; folio, pp. [10], [726]; text in double column; contemporary full calf neatly rebacked, red morocco label on spine; small hole in A1 causing loss to several letters, else a good, sound copy or better. With the ownership label of DeWitt Starnes on the flyleaf and in the bottom margin of the title-page, who in his Renaissance Dictionaries (Austin, 1954) cites it as a source for Cooper and Holyoke, and calls it "a Latin text devoted solely to proper names" which was in "great vogue from [its initial publication in] 1553 to the end of the seventeenth century." But in fact, the 1553 edition was based largely on the earlier Latin-French dictionary of his brother Robert, which had reached three editions by 1553. Wing E3349; Vancil, p. 83.
