JINBO, Genshu.
26 illus. 7 vols. Oblong 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed), printed title labels on upper covers (several defective), new stitching. Osaka: 1686. First edition of this rare and early surgical work (surgery is used here in its widest sense); WorldCat locates no copy of our first edition (NLM has the 1760 edition). Jinbo (active 1688), has provided a number of case histories, divided by the sections of the body (chest and abdomen, extremities, and the head). There are substantial sections on burns, skin diseases, syphilitic symptoms, emergency medicine (frozen bodies, resuscitation from drowning), antidotes for food poisoning, treatment for occupational diseases, rabies, snake bites, acupuncture treatments, pharmacological preparations, etc. The illustrations depict the various organs of the body, diseases of the breast, skin diseases, pressure points, etc. While written in kanji, there are Japanese reading marks (yomigana) throughout to assist readers. In his preface, Jinbo provides a list of ten earlier medical writers whose works he used to prepare the present textbook. Some relatively minor occasional worming, sometimes touching the images and, for the most part, carefully repaired. .

Horthemels, 1686. The extremely rare inventory catalogue of the manuscripts in the large and famous library of Pierre Séguier (1588-1672), chancellor of France and a man of deep learning. Séguier was a true bibliophile and an omnivorous one: Sauval, in his catalogue of the great Parisian libraries prepared in 1653-60, estimated at that time only the libraries of the King and Mazarin were larger; Séguier then owned about 24,000 volumes and he had more than ten years left to acquire! This is the only extant printed record of Séguier’s manuscripts, about four thousand in number, based on the 1672 inventory by René Hardy, a lawyer and himself an owner of manuscripts, and the traveller and orientalist Melchisedech Thévenot (1620-92) who was to become Keeper of the Bibliothèque du Roi in 1684. The catalogue is divided into four sections, the first listing state and official papers in the widest sense, historical manuscripts, local histories, literature, medicine, etc. The second describes the illuminated manuscripts ("Inventaire des Miniatures"); the third the Greek manuscripts, as well as ca. fifty Slavonic manuscripts, and two Greek printed books. The final section describes the Arabic, Coptic, Syriac, Ethiopic, and Hebrew manuscripts as well as a few printed books in those languages. 1686. Plusieurs ex-libris : François Delbart, A. Delbart et Charles Delbart. RARE édition du 17ème, complète.

DAPPER, Olfert.
Mendelssohn I, pp. 413-414; STCN (5 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 298 note. First edition of the French translation of Dapper's illustrated description of Africa, translated by Dapper himself. Dapper's description includes of Morocco, Guinea, Southern Africa, Congo and Angola, Eastern Africa (Nubia - Mozambique, Madagascar, Cape Verde Islands, Canary Islands, Malta), containing the names, rivers, towns, settlements, plants and animals of the regions and the customs, costumes, language, riches, religion and government of its peoples. The work starts with an extensive description of Egypt, with double-page views of Alexandria and Cairo, the pyramids, plants, etc. Surely no book spoke more to the imagination of the 17th-century Europe concerning the exotic lands just being explored, and it did much to establish the Western view of Africa among both scholars and the general public. Binding rebacked, as noted, and with some other restorations. Some small spots and waterstains in the lower and inner margin; a good copy.

King James II of England
Westminster [England], January 31 [c. 1686 - 1688]. 27.5" X 20.75". "Manuscript Document Signed “J Rex” by a court officer, one page, 27.5” x 20.75”. [London, 1685-1687]. In the hand of a scrivener. A portrait of King James II appears in the upper left, adorned with elaborate swirls. His name in Latin in Old English lettering is across the top: “Jacobus Secundus Dei gra” (“James Second by the grace of God”). Above his name is a 19.5” x 5” ornate border of foliage and animals, including a lion, unicorn, dragon, and serpents, beneath which is penned: “Sold in Cliffords Inne lane,” the printing establishment which produced the document. Simpler foliage adorns the left and right sides of the text. Documents of this type were said to have been penned in “old law-Latin, flavored with Norman French.” At the bottom is a 1.5” x 1.25” portion of vellum, which had been attached to the royal seal which is no longer present, bearing a handwritten, ornate “J Rex” signature placed there by a court officer. Light folds, some rubbing of letters. Generally, in apparent fine condition. Partial translation: “James Second by the grace of God King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith & to All to whom our present letters may come, Greeting. Know Ye that among the records and Feet of Fines with the proclamations thereof made according to the form of the Statute in that case lately enacted and provided...This is the Final Concord made in the court of our Lord the King at Westminster...and of the reign of our Lord James Second by the g … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALCK Gerard
[Click Below for Full Description]

Horneck, Anthony
London: Printed for Sam Lowndes, 1686 The rare first edition. There were five editions printed in the 17th century and many more in the 18th century. Contemporary gilt-tooled and paneled morocco. Decorative gilt spine with raised bands. All edges gilt. . Octavo. Copper engraved frontispiece by Faithorne. Wood-engraved headpieces and initial letters. Title page printed in black and red. Some leaves are misnumbered, but text is consecutive and complete. Binding extremities rubbed. Front hinge starting but still sound. Offsetting from frontispiece to preliminary blank and title page. Occasional soiling and foxing. Contemporary inscriptions and one later pencil inscription on preliminary blanks. A very good copy of a scarce book in an attractive binding. Anthony Horneck (1641-1697) was a Church of England clergyman. He shared the orthodox protestant belief in witches, contributing an appendix of Swedish cases to Joseph Glanville's Saducismus triumphatus (1682, second edition). In the 17th century, both the Lutheran and the Reformed orthodox parties displayed an unparalleled enthusiasm for Rabbinic and Hebrew studies; this was the strongest feature of Horneck's intellectual equipment and led to the award of a Cambridge DD in 1681. Much of Horneck's literary output was devoted to the rules of life for Christians, and his Fire of the Altar, a work designed to assist the devout communicant, ran to at least fourteen editions. In 1693, he became chaplain to William III and the first of a series of court chaplains and German preachers in the Savoy who played a distinguished role in Br … [Click Below for Full Description]
