VEURNE IN BELGIUM
1686. Large hand coloured manuscript map of the outlying districts of the town of Veurne in the Flemish region of Belgium. 63 x 98 cm on thick paper, folded three times; some slight wear on the folds and a few small holes, not really affecting the image. An attractive and historically important manuscript map. Sebastian Le Prestre Vauban constructed very distinctive fortifications to the town in the latter half of the 17th Century; these can be seen in the Ferraris Map of the Austrian Netherlands [1770 - 78]. There is no sign of these fortifications here, merely the earlier surrounding city wall. There is a listing of landowners with map references as well as an outline border marked on the map. The speculation is that this could be a survey to identify landowners prior to the requisition of land in order to construct the series of star shaped and zigzag fortifications and may be one of the few records in existence of this earlier shape and ownership of the surrounding district. These fortifications were taken down in the late 18th Century by forces under Joseph II of Austria and only outline traces remain.

This was in a second edition by 1670, with later editions appearing until 1698. London: Printed by Ralph Holt for Thomas Bassett, Thomas Dring, and John Leigh, 1686. Fourth edition, Revised: With a Table annexed. Hardcover. g- to vg. Large quarto (11 3/4 x 8"). [14]pp (The Epistle Dedicatory), 253, [1]pp (Text), [12]pp (Table of Contents). Blind-stamped contemporary calf, rebacked but retaining the original covers, with gold lettering and blind-stamped tooling to spine. Raised bands. Modern endpapers. Title page in red and black lettering. Originally published in 1639 under the title "A Relation of the Conference between William Laud and Mr Fisher by command of King James," this work is a first-hand account of the third conference between Father Perry (Fisher), a Jesuit, and bishop William Laud on May 24, 1622, before the lord marquess Buckingham, and the countess, his mother. The conference was a direct result of the Laud-"Fisher" (Father Percy) controversies on the Infallibility of the Church. Laud was induced by his desire to escape from the trammels of Calvinistic dogmatism to take up a wider and nobler position. In what he himself believed he was as arbitrary as any Calvinist; but the only way out of Calvinistic influence was by adopting a position of greater width. He argued that not all points defined by the Church are fundamental; limited as far as possible the domain and extent of soul-saving faith; and urged that the foundations of the faith are the Scriptures and the Creeds. In case of any doubt about the meaning of the Articles, or superstructures upon them - ("which are doctrines about the faith, not the faith itself, unless when the … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: 1686. This unknown edition is also unique in many other ways. It remains in its elaborate original full red morocco leather binding ornately covered with gold floral boards and more floral tooling on spine with four raised bands. What makes this copy even more treasured is it retains its original metal working clasps with small hearts and corners metal pieces. One strap is engraved with the letters "M" and "H". The other strap is dated 1690 which would be in keeping with the dating of this bible. This bible is 100% complete including all four title pages and perfect with no apologies containing over 725 pages with no markings, foxing, staining, water marks, etc. An interesting copy tightly housed in a very attractive binding.Museum Qualiity in every way and custom box provided. Duodecimos 115 x 54 The Herbert guide calls for the General title to be dated 1685 and the NT title 1686. Both the titles give the name of T. Guy with text ending on Vv12b and containing no Apocrypha. This unique copy in fact begins with the title page to the Book of Common Prayer printed at the Theatre in Oxford and to be sold by Thomas Guy dated 1686.It then contains a Preface, Lessons, Calendar, Table and Order of Prayers and Psalms with 54 leaves ending in E12b. It then contains the General Title page dated 1686 (not 1685) and attributed once again to Thomas Guy. Signatures are in 12's ending in Ii8b. The title contains the Order of Books on verso and Apocrypha is omitted. Then follows a leaf of Dedication and then text. The New Testament title once again printed for Thomas Guy at Oxford … [Click Below for Full Description]

Crouch at the Bell in the Poultrey near Cheapside, A prolific and important bookseller, Crouch published, compiled, and to a degree authored his prodigious and, crucially, inexpensive works, often invoking the authorial pseudonym Richard or Robert Burton, or ?R.B.? His compendiums therefore came to be known as Burton's Books. His chap-book length histories offered a reader of modest means an opportunity to educate themselves in worldly affairs and thereby potentially facilitate the kind of social mobility that the prohibitive price of the majority of works on history, travel and science in the 17th century might otherwise prevent. Crouch was a publisher of prodigious output, and this little compendium was printed in at least four editions. It deals firstly with Guinea, then St. Helena, with a short description of Saldana Bay, west of the Cape of Good Hope, however his description of the East Indies becomes much more sketchy and loose. Ten pages of the text relate to the Table Valley in South Africa before the Dutch occupation of 1652. It also contains, in the section on St Helena, an abridgement of Francis Godwin's The Man in the Moone, or a discourse of a Voyage Thither by Diago Gonsales. First published in 1638, this curious work of utopian astronomical fiction sees a Spanish protagonist, Gonsales, harnes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Terra Rossa, Vitale
Cadorino, Padua. [32],298,[10, Index]pp. including portrait of the author. Half title. Quarto. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title. Moderate soiling to boards, small repair to spine tail. Rear free endpaper lacking. A clean copy. Very good. First issue of Terra Rossa's famous account detailing discoveries in the New World, as denoted by the 1686 date and the privilege below the imprint reading: "Et Privilegio del Serenissimo Principe." Includes much information on Venetian explorers, going so far as to credit Marco Polo with discovering Australia, and attempts to rename Terra Australis as Terra Australe Magallanica to honor Magellan. In this work Terra Rossa "attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis." (Hiatt, TERRA INCOGNITA, p.261). He also defends the claims of the Zeno brothers to have made a northern discovery of America prior to Columbus. A rare and surprisingly little-known work focused on early exploration of the Southern Hemisphere. SABIN 94858. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 686/157/.
