TERRA ROSSA, Vitale.
Padua: per il Cadorino, 1686. Quarto, with a portrait of the author; a few light stains, a small wormhole and repaired tear in the half-title, but an excellent copy in 19th-century marbled boards, rebacked, with the bookplate of "Bibliotheca Veneta Car. Frid. Guilelm Brose MDCCCLXXII" Rare, important and little-known early work on the southern continent, summarising early geographical knowledge and drawing on Marco Polo and others to sing the praises of Italian, and specifically Venetian explorers: Terrarossa 'attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis... ' (Hiatt, Terra Incognita, p. 261).This is the first issue of the first edition of this rare work, identified by the imprint with the privilege "del serenissimo principe" and dated 1686 (the same sheets were also issued with the imprint date altered to 1687 and the privilege "del serenissimo senato").Terra Rossa concentrates extensively on Terra Australis (which he proposes calling Terra Australe Magallanica, in honour of Magellan), mostly with reference to Marco Polo, and considerable importance is attached to Marco Polo's "Beach, provincia aurifera" (Beach, the gold-bearing province), a promontory of the hypothetical Terra Australis Incognita, which became an important feature in maps of the period after Mercator first featured it on his sixteenth-century maps (specifically citing Marco Polo as his source). By the mid-seventeenth century, it had become a regular (if moveable) part of attempts to reconcile it with the fragments of coastline kno … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONFUCIUS.
Paris: Andrea Cramoisy for Daniel Horthemels, 1686-87. Small folio, folding engraved portrait of Confucius and folding engraved map of China, several engraved headpieces and initials, some small stamps and early manuscript annotation on front free endpaper; 18th-century tree calf, fine gilt border on boards, spine richly gilt with crimson label. The first European printing of the works of Confucius and an early Enlightenment milestone, precursor to the great eighteenth-century enthusiasm for China, a development that had a dramatic influence on European culture, most obviously in the decorative arts and architecture, but also in the currents of scholarly and intellectual writing. Leibniz and Voltaire were among the more important writers to adapt Chinese ideas, quite apart from ambitious projects such as Du Halde's great "Description" (see below). In many ways the modern era of European contact with China had begun in 1601, when the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci arrived in the Chinese capital to establish a Catholic mission. The reports of Ricci and his colleagues were widely published, with many, like this, produced in Paris, a centre for the Jesuits. As Lowendahl points out, 'by one of the stranger ironies of history, Europe first learned of Confucius from Jesuits who had been sent out to convert the "heathen" Chinese'.This first systematic presentation of Confucianism includes the earliest translation into Latin of The Analects, the fundamental Confucian text and the very basis of Chinese scholarship. Translations of Confucius into Latin were central to the growth of wester … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORONELLI, P.M. (VINCENZO MARIA). - [THE RECONQUEST OF PELOPONNESE (MOREA).]
Venezia, (1686). 8vo. (16,5x11 cm.). Contemp. full vellum. Halftitle-page. Engraved Title-page (the Lion of St. Mark). Printed on good paper. A fine copy. ¶ Second edition (the first 8vo-edition), issued the same year as the first (in folio), describing the Venetian campaign for the reconquest of the Peloponnese or Morea, from which Venice had been almost completely excluded since the Turkish conquest of the Greek island in 1458."As is often the case with Coronelli's work, the contents may vary with each example as plates were added, subtracted or changed as the editor saw fit" (Rodney Shirley "Maps in the Atlases of the british Library", T.Coro-1a, - listing only 39 maps and views for this copy).Coronelli Vincenzo Maria, an Italian geographer and draughtsman, was born at Venice about 1650. From 1681-1683 he worked in Paris on a pair of 3.85 meter diameter globes for Louis XIV, which are now in the National Library in Paris. On his return to Venice he was made cosmographer of the Republic, and founded the Academy of Argonauts (the first Geographical Society). In 1702 he became general of his order.

ITO, Kageharu
Numerous woodcut illus. in the text. Three vols. bound in four. Large 8vo, orig. brown wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. N.p.: dated at end of fourth volume "1686." First edition and very rare. This is one of the first books to describe the sukiya architectural style, which was developed in the late 16th century. The techniques of design and construction had been kept secret until the publication of books like this. The sukiya style was originally used for tea houses and its main tenets were the aesthetic of naturalness and rustic simplicity, designed to harmonize with their surroundings. The majority of Japanese houses for 400 years have been built in the sukiya style. The purpose of this book was to reveal the intricacies of the design and construction in the sukiya style, written for architects and builders. The first volume (in two volumes) describes the overall unity of design of the various elements sukiya style. Various kinds of joining devices are shown, including many sorts of nails, pins, and hooks. The elements of design include gates, floor plans, walls made of natural earthen plaster, and simply designed transoms. Vol. II contains descriptions of a number of buildings constructed in this style. The third volume is concerned with the design of the main rooms, gates, bathrooms, and other special purpose rooms. The woodcuts depict gates, numerous floor plans, stages, the joining devices, vases, etc. A very nice set.

Marot, Dani«l
[PAULETTA, Giovanni Andrea; CLEMENTI, Girolamo, and others]
Padua: Gio. Battista Pasquati, 1686. 4to (211 x 162 mm). [40] pages. Half-title, engraved frontispiece showing the arms of Mocenigo (two roses, argent on a sable ground and sable on an argent ground) held aloft by two maidens and with a pair of putti holding a crown at top; woodcut rose vignette on title, repeated in text, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut and typographic ornaments. Fine. Modern boards. *** A pretty gratulatory volume of verse and prose tributes to the podestà of Padua, Alvise "Luigi" Mocenigo (1628-1701) on the occasion of his retirement. By law, god knows why, every male member of the Mocenigo family was named Alvise; to avoid confusion they used numbers, and this Alvise was no. 9, but for the purposes of this tribute, he was the one and only Luigi M. Blessed with a calm temperament, Luigi fulfilled the charges of his offices responsibly, including the highest office of Podestà, which he held from 1684 to 1686, earning the approbation of his fellow citizens by promoting commerce, education, and the smooth administration of justice; and the compliments paid him in this volume, by G. A. Pauletta, Doctor F. M. B., Clementi (who signed the dedication), and anonymous authors of an ode, a madrigal and an epigram, were probably at least partly sincere. Pauletta's contribution is the eponymous Rosa Trionfante, a festival play, which was no doubt performed and enacted with a float and costumes: a triumphal chariot (trionfo in Italian, hence the wordplay of the title) is pulled along the shores of the Adriatic by four large winged lions wearing crowns … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Plot
Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1686 A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape with acid content which has subsequently browned. Around 13 folding plates are affected, mainly at the central join with book block or at the edges (with occasional loss - Plate 29 is the worst example having lost a side fold - probably around an inch of the image). Most of the work is fairly unobtrusive, but some is very noticeable. Giacomo CANTELLI (Vignola 1643 - 1695)
"Map taken from ""Mercurio Geografico"", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. The Italian cartographer Cantelli introduced a style in cartography that was followed and developed by Coronelli: his maps are very attractive and finely engraved, with elaborate strapworks and decorations.
