BAHA' AL-DIN IBN SHADDAD (BOHADIN) and Albert SCHULTENS (translator).
Gay 2238; Schnurrer 175; not in Blackmer. Reissue of the first edition of the standard biography of Saladin (1138-1193), the first Ayyubid sultan of Egypt and Syria, written by his secretary, Baha' al-Din ibn Shaddad (1145-1234). Saladin (or more properly, Salah al-Din) is renowned in the East as the great Mohammedan ruler who united the lands of Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Mesopotamia into a single Muslim empire. In 1187 he launched a "jihad" against the Christian invaders of the Holy Land and captured Jerusalem, showing clemency to the Christian inhabitants. He went on to drive the crusaders from every fortification in the land, except Acre, which he besieged unsuccessfully for two years. This volume also contains selections from the universal history of Abu al-Fida, a descendant of Saladin, who took part in the campaigns against the crusaders and later became sultan (1320). His history covers the period from creation to 1329. The editor and translator Albert Schultens (1686-1750) was a Dutch Orientalist, and regarded as the chief Arabist of his time.Title-page browned, some minor foxing and some damp stains, mostly marginal, otherwise in good condition. Binding worn along the extremities, top and bottom of spine damaged.

ESTIENNE, CHARLES
London: B. Tooke, T. Passenger [et al.], 1686. Best and last edition, with additions, corrections and a geographical index by Nicholas Lloyd; folio, pp. [10], [726]; text in double column; contemporary full calf neatly rebacked, red morocco label on spine; small hole in A1 causing loss to several letters, else a good, sound copy or better. With the ownership label of DeWitt Starnes on the flyleaf and in the bottom margin of the title-page, who in his Renaissance Dictionaries (Austin, 1954) cites it as a source for Cooper and Holyoke, and calls it "a Latin text devoted solely to proper names" which was in "great vogue from [its initial publication in] 1553 to the end of the seventeenth century." But in fact, the 1553 edition was based largely on the earlier Latin-French dictionary of his brother Robert, which had reached three editions by 1553. Wing E3349; Vancil, p. 83.

[Esquemeling; Oexmelin] Exquemelin, Alexander Olivier
The rare first French edition, of what´s arguably the most influential buccaneering account; from the Hamsworth library. 1686. Paris. Jacques Lefebvre. Two volumes in 12mo (164 mm x 87 mm). 1 [blank] + 15 ff. + 342 + 12 ff. + 1 [blank]; 1 [blank] + 3 ff. + 384 + 12 ff. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, richly gilt and lettered, worn but still an attractive binding in its original condition. A fine copy, gently browned as often and with a few foxing spots, second title water stained, short tears to folding plates. First French edition. Besides its rarity, this edition is also important for its illustrations don´t derive from either the Dutch original or two earliest English editions. The translation was prepared by Frontigniéres, from Exquemelin´s own manuscript; the first edition in all was published in Dutch in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. The success was immediate, translations followed and editions continued until the 18th century. Exquemelin (1645 ? 1707) was a French Huguenot, in 1666 made sale towards the Antilles, his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates and after reaching Tortuga he was apparently sold to a local who subsequently sold to a surgeon of some sort, he would teach him his office and eventually grant him his freedom against payment. At an uncertain date, Exquemelin became a privateer; as a pirate, he participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669 and that of Panama in 1670 under Morgan. His experiences and observations were concentrated in his memoires. The detail with which Exquemelin describes the lootings, plundering, l … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE CLERC, JEAN (1657-1736).
1686. Complete set of this late seventeenth century magazine, published in Amsterdam, made up of various editions but all from the same provenance. Vol. I - XXI all in one volume ; (I & II from the second edition of 1687 ; vol. XVII & XVIII & XIX from the second edition of 1699 ; vol. XX, third edition 1702 ; vol. XXI, third edition 1707 ; Vol. XXII - XXV each in two volumes from the second edition dated between 1698 and 1701). 25 years in 29 volumes. An index volume XXVI was published in 1719 after Fletcher's death. 12mo. All volumes in marbled wrappers, uncut and unopened. Among the many scholarly journals published all over Europe in the decades around 1700 Jean Le Clerc's Bibliothèques, published in Amsterdam, occupied a special place. Jean Le Clerc, a theologian and refugee from Geneva, published three periodicals: The Bibliothèque Universelle et Historique (1686-1693); the Bibliothèque Choisie (1703-1713) and the Bibliothèque Ancienne et Moderne (1714-1727). Thanks to his journalistic activities, we now have an excellent picture of contemporary scholarship in the Republic of Letters, the more so since, in the Republic of Letters, the editor did not need to worry so much as his colleagues in other countries about all kinds of repressive measures resulting from sometimes strict censorship. Jean Le Clerc published his periodicals for this large group of interested people who didn't have the time or the financial means to read everything that was being published, like doctors, magistrats and merchants. The periodicals were not intended for specialized scholars. They were … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHULTENS, Albert.
1686. STCN (1 copy); KVK & WorldCat (2 copies). Second edition of Albert Schultens's renowned grammar of biblical Hebrew. Schultens (1686-1750), known as the father of comparative Semitic philology, taught Hebrew at Franeker and Leiden. He wrote extensively on the relationship between Hebrew and other Semitic languages, claiming that Arabic and Hebrew were "twin sisters". He used Arabic to interpret obscure Hebrew passages in the Bible. Schultens's extensive grammar was one of the most influential Hebrew grammars of the 18th century. Slightly browned and foxed, but otherwise in very good condition and only slightly trimmed (preserving an occasional deckle). The gold of the spine and edges was not well bonded and has been largely lost. The binding shows a few small worm holes, small cracks in the spine and other minor damage, but is still good. The rare second edition of an important work, also a remarkable example of Transylvanian book production.

Map taken from "Mercurio Geografico", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. Volumes 1 and 2 of Ray's great work in which he intended to classify all known European plants and attempted to integrate the increasing knowledge of exotic flora. Ray adopted Jungius' morphological system and terminology and includes essays on practical aspects such as propagation and plant diseases, as well as a thorough and systematic survey of plants according to taxonomic principles. Ray's theories paved the way for Linnaeus, but he enjoyed only modest success with Historia plantarum, largely due to the work's unwieldy size, lack of illustrations, and the political upheaval occurring at the time of publication. Lemee, Francois
940 S., ca. 150 Abb. s/w, Lit.verz. 4 Kart. *verlagsneu*. [Click Below for Full Description]
